Fortra BoKS—presented by Fortra as Core Privileged Access Manager (BoKS)—is enterprise software for centrally managing accounts and privileged access across Linux and UNIX servers. It is designed to let administrators govern user accounts, authentication, privilege elevation and command access across a server estate rather than configure each system in isolation. Fortra lists capabilities including directory integration, centralized sudo management and audit functions; these are vendor-described features, not independent test results.
What Fortra BoKS is for
BoKS is aimed at organizations that need centralized Linux and UNIX access management. Its stated purpose is to administer accounts and control how users obtain elevated privileges across multiple systems. Fortra describes creating, changing and removing user and group accounts centrally, then applying access policies across the managed environment. Fortra’s BoKS product page describes the platform and its positioning.

This makes BoKS a specific enterprise access-management product, rather than a general-purpose consumer security tool. Its fit depends on the organization’s server platforms, identity setup, policy requirements and deployment needs.

How BoKS fits into privileged access management
Privileged access management (PAM) is the product category concerned with controlling elevated access to important systems. BoKS’s role, as Fortra describes it, is to govern who may elevate privileges, which commands they may run and how privileged activity is administered or audited.
- Centralized account administration: Manage user and group accounts across Linux and UNIX servers from central controls.
- Privilege and command policies: Set who can obtain elevated access and constrain which commands are permitted. Fortra also describes centralized sudo management and role-based command sets on its PAM controls page.
- Individual access instead of shared privileged passwords: Fortra says BoKS can allow users to elevate privileges without distributing a shared privileged password. Its controls page describes this approach alongside privileged-access controls.
- Administration and audit: Fortra highlights web administration, key management, session recording, activity and keystroke logs, and audit reports on its BoKS demo page.
These descriptions explain the intended control model; they do not independently establish how effective a deployment will be or which features are included in a particular configuration or license.
Two different meanings of PAM
In “privileged access management,” PAM names the security category. On Linux and UNIX, PAM also means Pluggable Authentication Modules, a mechanism applications use to connect to authentication services. The two meanings are related in BoKS but are not interchangeable.

- DUAL-APPLICATION CARD: Combines FIDO2 hardware two-factor authentication and MIFARE DESFire EV2 (4K, AES) physical access on one Swiss-engineered NFC smart card
- CUSTOMIZABLE WHITE PVC: Blank printable face ready for in-house printing of employee photos, names, and company logos to double as a branded ID badge
- FIDO ALLIANCE CERTIFIED: Meets FIDO2 v2.1 and CTAP Level 1 for phishing-resistant MFA and passwordless sign-in where the service supports it
- CERTIFIED SECURE ELEMENT: Common Criteria EAL 6+ augmented protect your keys on a tamper-resistant chip
- TAP OR CONTACT USE: Works over NFC (ISO 14443) and contact (ISO 7816) interfaces backed by a 2 year warranty
Fortra describes BoKS as providing a centrally controlled PAM module, with authentication-method cascading and central policy for online authentication and authorization. The stated aim is to avoid maintaining the same authentication configuration separately on every protected host. Details are on Fortra’s Pluggable Authentication page.

BoKS’s Active Directory integration is distinct from its operating-system PAM integration. Fortra documents Active Directory bridging for account provisioning and de-provisioning, Kerberos capabilities, and use of Microsoft Identity Management for UNIX without changing the AD schema. Those capabilities concern connecting identity and account administration; the PAM module concerns authentication mechanisms on Linux and UNIX systems. See Fortra’s Active Directory Bridging page.

What to check before evaluating BoKS
Fortra’s published material establishes a Linux and UNIX focus, but the pages cited here do not provide a complete, current support matrix or settle architecture, licensing, pricing or implementation requirements. Ask Fortra for current documentation and a scoped proposal, and assess the product against your environment:
- System coverage: Confirm support for the exact Linux and UNIX distributions and releases you run, along with any required non-UNIX platforms.
- Privilege model: Check whether policies can constrain access by user, role, context and command, and whether the approach to elevation meets your credential-management requirements.
- Directory workflow: Establish how provisioning, group membership, authentication and offboarding will work with your identity provider and Active Directory estate.
- Administration and audit: Verify what events and sessions are recorded, how reports are produced, and whether those records meet your audit requirements. Fortra’s Centralized Security and Administration page and demo page describe areas to examine.
- Deployment and commercial terms: Confirm architecture, prerequisites, implementation effort, feature scope, licenses, support and cost directly with Fortra.
Organizations responsible for Linux and UNIX systems can use Fortra’s BoKS demo page as an evaluation starting point.
