Focus Mode is not Samsung’s main control for choosing which calls or messages can interrupt you. Samsung describes it as temporarily pausing or silencing notifications from selected apps. For exceptions that let particular callers, messages, apps, or system alerts through, use Do not disturb (DND) and its allowed-during or exception settings. The exact options and menu names depend on your Galaxy model, software version, and region.
What Focus Mode does—and what it does not promise
Samsung’s Digital Wellbeing overview describes Focus Mode as a way to “pause or silence notifications from selected applications temporarily” while you concentrate on a task. In practical terms, it concerns notifications from the apps you select; Samsung’s general description does not define one universal list of calls, messages, or other exceptions that every Galaxy phone will allow through.

Do not assume that silencing an app notification means the underlying communication was blocked or deleted. A call or message may still arrive even if its alert is silenced or hidden. Nor should you assume that Focus Mode prevents you from opening every selected app: Samsung’s current overview describes notification behavior, while older instructions describe editing which apps are available during a focus period. Check the Focus Mode screen on your phone to see what its implementation controls.
For calls, messages, and app exceptions, use Do not disturb
Samsung documents the controls for calls and messages, app notifications, alarms, and other sounds under Do not disturb. Its US support instructions explain how to set exceptions and schedules, and how to hide notifications. Depending on your phone, look for labels such as Allowed during Do not disturb, Exceptions, or similar wording.

Samsung’s support example for a Galaxy S26+ running Android 16 and One UI 8.5 describes controls to allow or block selected contacts, calls, and messages; allow repeated callers; choose apps; and configure system alerts such as alarms, calendar events, and reminders. These are examples of available DND controls, not a guaranteed menu or identical feature set on every Galaxy.
Set up the interruption rules on your Galaxy
- Open Do not disturb. Try Settings > Notifications > Do not disturb, or open Quick settings and touch and hold the Do not disturb icon. Samsung documents both the Quick settings shortcut and settings access, but the precise route can vary.
- Open the allowed or exception controls. Choose the categories your phone offers for people, calls, messages, apps, and system alerts.
- Choose who or what may interrupt. Add permitted contacts or apps, decide whether repeated callers may ring, and configure alarms, calendar events, or reminders if those options appear.
- Review schedules and notification display. DND can be scheduled, and Samsung documents options for hiding some notifications. A notification’s visibility and whether its alert interrupts you are separate from whether the call or message itself is received.
- Check the phone’s own Focus Mode settings separately. Open Digital Wellbeing and inspect the selected apps and any availability controls shown there. Do not treat a DND exception as proof that an app notification is exempt from Focus Mode, or vice versa.

Samsung warns that instructions can differ by model, installed software, and region. Its German support page, updated September 22, 2026, illustrates current DND controls on a Galaxy S26+ with Android 16 and One UI 8.5; it is a version-specific example, not a universal screen guide. Samsung’s US support page may use different wording.

One UI 5.1.1 also introduced easier ways to add individual contacts and apps as DND exceptions, according to Samsung’s One UI 5.1.1 feature page. That note describes a change for that software version; it does not establish identical screens on later or regional releases.

If a notification still appears
- Check whether Do not disturb is active and whether the person, message type, app, or alert is permitted by its exceptions.
- Check whether repeated callers are allowed, if your phone offers that option.
- Look at Focus Mode’s selected-app settings as a separate control from DND.
- Check whether the alert was merely hidden or silenced; that does not by itself mean the call or message was blocked.
