It can also offer recommendations for issues it detects. That makes it a useful first check when videos buffer or Fire TV reports “Unable to Connect”—but it cannot prove that Wi-Fi is the cause of every playback problem.
What Fire TV Network Status checks
Network Status separates two links that are easy to confuse: the connection from the Fire TV to the router, and the connection from the router to the internet. Seeing which link is reported as having trouble can help you decide what to check next. Amazon describes the tool as a way to identify and troubleshoot network connectivity issues, not as a definitive diagnosis of every fault. Amazon’s Network Status overview.

- Fire TV to router: The status indicates whether the device is connected to your local network.
- Router to internet: The status indicates whether that network has an internet connection.
- Recommendations: The screen may provide guidance for observed connectivity issues. Follow the displayed advice; do not infer a more specific cause than the tool reports.
- Optional details: Some compatible Fire TV devices show a network download-speed test, let you run it again, or include an Advanced view with connection information such as data usage. These options are not available on every model.
How to open Network Diagnostics
Menu labels and available details can vary by Fire TV model. Amazon’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting instructions give these routes:
- From Settings: Open Settings > Network, select the network status option, then press Play/Pause on the remote to check network status.
- From an error screen: If Fire TV displays Unable to Connect, choose Network Diagnostics and review the Wi-Fi status and recommendations. On compatible devices, the screen may also offer Run Speed Test or Advanced.

What buffering does—and does not—tell you
Buffering is a reason to check Network Status, but it is not proof of a Wi-Fi fault. The tool reports connectivity conditions; Amazon’s guidance does not say that it diagnoses every app, streaming service, account, or playback problem. Nor does the cited help page give a universal internet-speed threshold that guarantees successful streaming.
Compare the two connection statuses, then consider whether the problem affects other devices. Amazon notes that if multiple devices have gone offline, a network outage may be involved. If only Fire TV is affected, work through device and Wi-Fi troubleshooting before assuming the router or internet service needs replacing.

What to try when Fire TV cannot connect
Amazon’s recommended troubleshooting sequence moves from checking the reported status to progressively more disruptive steps. A factory reset belongs at the end, not at the start.
- Review Network Diagnostics: From the Unable to Connect screen, choose Network Diagnostics. Check Wi-Fi status and follow the on-screen recommendations.
- Restart Fire TV: Unplug the device, wait 10 seconds, then plug it back in.
- Reconnect to Wi-Fi: In Settings > Network, toggle Wi-Fi off and on. If the connection still fails, forget the saved network and reconnect using the correct network name and password.
- Check placement and other devices: If possible, move the Fire TV and router closer to improve signal strength. If several devices are offline, check whether the wider network has an outage.
- Consider a factory reset only if earlier steps fail: Amazon places this after the preceding troubleshooting steps.
When the problem is audio, HDR, or picture format
A healthy network status does not rule out an HDMI or format issue. Fire TV has a separate Audio and Video Diagnostics tool for checking connected equipment—including a TV, soundbar, or AV receiver—for maximum resolution and refresh rate, HDR and Dolby Vision support, and surround-sound standards. Amazon says this feature is not available on every Fire TV device.

Open Settings > Display & Sounds > Audio and Video Diagnostics. If HDR or Dolby Vision is not working, Amazon also advises checking that both the TV and the content support the desired format, and whether an AV receiver or soundbar passes that format through. Those are HDMI-chain checks, not evidence of a Wi-Fi problem. See Amazon’s guidance on Dolby Vision or High Dynamic Range not working and audio not working on Fire TV.

Consider equipment changes only when troubleshooting points toward weak wireless coverage or a capability mismatch. Amazon says Fire TV devices that support Wi-Fi 6E can connect on the 6-GHz band and recommends a Wi-Fi 6E-or-higher-capable router for best performance with those compatible devices. Check the specifications for your exact Fire TV before treating that as a requirement; Amazon’s device-identification reference covers a range of models and software families.

For a larger home where coverage is the issue, Amazon suggests considering a mesh router. It also says using the same network name (SSID) across 2.4-GHz, 5-GHz, and 6-GHz bands lets Fire TV connect to the best-performing band based on signal strength. These are conditional options, not a default fix for buffering. The diagnostic distinction matters: a local Fire TV-to-router problem may make coverage relevant, while an internet-side problem may require checking the wider network or service instead. Amazon’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance does not compare router brands or models.
