What Ethernet Cable Do You Need for Gigabit Internet?

A properly made four-pair Cat 5e cable is enough for gigabit Ethernet. Cat 6 also works, but your service and both Ethernet ports must support gigabit.

For gigabit internet, use a properly made, four-pair Cat 5e Ethernet cable or better. Cat 6 also supports gigabit, but it is not required just to get a 1 Gbps Ethernet link. Your internet plan and the Ethernet ports at both ends must support gigabit too; the cable cannot overcome a slower connection elsewhere.

Is Cat 5e enough for gigabit?

Yes. Cat 5e is a sensible minimum for a new cable and can carry a 1000BASE-T gigabit Ethernet link when the cable, terminations and connected hardware are in good condition. A sound Cat 5e cable you already own is generally suitable; you do not need to replace it simply because you upgraded to gigabit service.

For a new installation, avoid buying plain Cat 5 on the basis of older standards history. Fluke Networks’ article dated January 27, 2014 discusses the historical 1000BASE-T requirements and recommends Cat 5e as the minimum for current installations.

Do you need Cat 6 for gigabit internet?

No. Cat 6 supports a gigabit link as well, but choosing it solely for gigabit does not raise the Ethernet link rate above 1 Gbps. Cat 6 can be a reasonable choice for a new run, but it does not make a slower router port, device port or internet plan faster.

Category Gigabit support Practical choice
Cat 5e Supports 1000BASE-T at 100 metres in Fluke Networks’ guide. A suitable minimum for a new gigabit cable; a sound existing cable can remain in use.
Cat 6 Also supports 1000BASE-T at 100 metres in Fluke Networks’ guide. A valid alternative for a new cable run, but not necessary just to reach gigabit.

These category ratings describe supported Ethernet cabling, not a promise that an internet speed test will show 1 Gbps. The service and every relevant network port still set limits.

How long can an Ethernet cable be and still get gigabit?

The cited maximum segment length for 1000BASE-T over copper is 100 metres (328 feet), according to CommScope’s technical paper. Fluke Networks also lists 100 metres for both Cat 5e and Cat 6 in its Network Engineer Tools and Troubleshooting Guide.

  • The unique flat cable shape allows for a cleaner and safer installation. You can easily and seamlessly make the cable run along walls, follow edges & corners or even make it completely invisible by sliding it under a carpet.

That limit is not a guarantee for every installation at that distance. Cable quality, terminations and connecting hardware matter. For an ordinary short home patch cable, choose a complete, undamaged cable of the needed length; structured-cabling installations approaching the limit depend on standards-compliant components and installation.

Why does 1000BASE-T need all four pairs?

1000BASE-T uses all four copper pairs in the cable. A damaged pair, poor termination or defective lead can therefore prevent a gigabit link from negotiating correctly or affect performance. Use a complete four-pair cable rather than assuming that any cable with Ethernet plugs will work properly.

Fluke Networks says cabling and connecting hardware must meet relevant standards, be installed properly, and pass a compliant field test. That testing guidance is chiefly relevant to installers and structured cabling; a typical home user does not need to buy a field tester just to connect a router and computer.

What else must support gigabit?

  • Internet service: Your plan must provide gigabit-class service. Actual measured internet speed can be lower than the plan rate.
  • Router or switch: Connect to a port rated for gigabit Ethernet; a slower port caps the link.
  • Device: The computer, console or other endpoint also needs a gigabit-capable Ethernet port.
  • Cable and connections: Use Cat 5e or better, with all four pairs and sound connectors.

If the connection negotiates below gigabit

  1. Check that both the router or switch port and the device port support gigabit Ethernet.
  2. Reseat the cable at both ends and inspect it for visible damage or loose connectors.
  3. Try another known-good Cat 5e or Cat 6 cable. A replacement cable can address a faulty lead, but it will not fix a slower port or service plan.
  4. If this is a permanent or long structured-cabling run, have the cable and connecting hardware checked against the relevant installation standard.
