Whether it belongs in a project depends on its API needs, bundle, runtime, performance requirements and migration cost.
This is the question behind “Of Mice and Toolkits,” the main story in Bytes issue #412, published July 28, 2025: do developers still need utility libraries in the “Year of our Spec”?

What is es-toolkit?
es-toolkit is a JavaScript utility library: a collection of reusable functions for common tasks that would otherwise require application code or another dependency. The project highlights helpers such as debounce, delay, sum and pick, as well as TypeScript support and tree-shaking-friendly imports. Its repository also documents support for several modern JavaScript runtimes and a Lodash compatibility entry point. See the project repository and official site for current documentation.
That does not mean every project needs it. JavaScript already supplies many everyday operations, including array methods such as map and filter. A utility library makes sense when its additional helpers, types, compatibility features or runtime support solve a real project need better than local code or native APIs.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How does it compare with Lodash?
Lodash is an established JavaScript utility library whose repository describes a focus on modularity, performance and extras. Bytes characterized es-toolkit as “2–3x faster and 97% smaller” than Lodash in its July 28, 2025 issue; the es-toolkit project also publishes similar performance and size claims. Those figures are not a universal result: the cited project materials do not establish that every function, workload, runtime or production build will see the same difference.
Bundle impact depends on which functions an application imports and how its build is configured. Performance depends on the particular operations, input sizes and runtime. Treat headline figures as a reason to measure, not as a substitute for measuring your own application.

- 5-in-1 USB-C Hub: Experience comprehensive connectivity featuring a Power Delivery input, two USB-A 2.0 ports, a USB-A 3.0 port, and an HDMI port. (Note: The USB-C power delivery input port is only for connecting an external wall charger to power your laptop and cannot power peripheral devices.)
- 90W Pass-Through Charging: Achieve optimal charging with 90W pass-through power to your laptop, supported by a total input of 100W, with the hub reserving 10W for operational efficiency. (Note: Wall charger not included.)
- Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
What does the Lodash compatibility layer do?
The compatibility layer, available from the es-toolkit/compat entry point, is the main migration path for projects that already use Lodash. It is intended to ease the move by providing a compatibility-oriented API surface. Its existence does not guarantee that every Lodash call can be replaced without code changes or behavioral differences.

Before migrating, inventory the Lodash functions the application actually uses. Check whether each is available through the compatibility layer, compare behavior for relevant inputs and edge cases, and run the application’s tests. Pay particular attention to differences that matter to your code rather than assuming similarly named functions are interchangeable.

- Sleek 7-in-1 USB-C Hub: Features an HDMI port, two USB-A 3.0 ports, and a USB-C data port, each providing 5Gbps transfer speeds. It also includes a USB-C PD input port for charging up to 100W and dual SD and TF card slots, all in a compact design.
- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
How to decide whether to adopt it
- List the problem functions. Identify repeated utility code or Lodash calls that the project needs. For each, check whether a native JavaScript API already covers the use case.
- Verify API and runtime fit. Consult the es-toolkit documentation for the functions and import paths you plan to use. Check the project’s Node.js, Deno, Bun or browser targets, as applicable, and confirm TypeScript inference works with the types your code expects.
- Inspect the production bundle. Add only the imports you need, build with the project’s normal production configuration, and compare the resulting bundle. Tree shaking and import patterns affect the outcome; a library-level size claim does not predict a particular application’s result.
- Benchmark representative work. If speed matters, compare the relevant functions using realistic inputs in the runtime where the application will run. Test the workload that matters to users, not just an unrelated microbenchmark.
- Estimate migration effort. For a Lodash migration, check each used API and behavior, update code where needed, and run the test suite. The compatibility layer can reduce friction, but migration still needs validation.
- Keep or remove the dependency based on evidence. Retain it if its helpers, types or compatibility support justify the dependency in your project. If built-ins or a small amount of clear local code cover the need, another library may not be worthwhile.
How much adoption does it have?
The July 28, 2025 Bytes issue reported 3 million weekly npm downloads and named Storybook, Ink and Recharts as projects using es-toolkit at that time. The download figure is a historical report from the newsletter, not a current 2026 measurement; it was not independently confirmed against a primary npm statistics page here. The issue’s adoption examples show use in named projects, but do not by themselves establish suitability for every application.
