Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor a typical household, you need two separate things: a Starlink hardware kit and an active service plan registered to your service address. A Standard 4 X kit includes the terminal, kickstand, Router 3, a 15 m (49.2 ft) Starlink cable, an AC cable and a power supply. Residential service is intended for a fixed, land-based home location; if you need to use Starlink at another address or while travelling, Starlink’s current guidance points to a Roam plan instead.
The short answer: hardware plus a service plan
Buying the dish alone does not provide internet access. The terminal, router, cables and power equipment are the physical side of the system; the subscription is the recurring service that authorizes connectivity at a registered location. You must arrange both, and the exact kit contents and plan options depend on the Starlink model, your country and the service address you enter during ordering.

For a fixed household installation, start by checking the Residential offer for your address. For travel, seasonal use or a second location, check the Roam offer instead. Do not assume that a kit or plan sold in another market has the same price, data terms or eligibility.

- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Component | What it does | Standard 4 X detail |
|---|---|---|
| Starlink terminal | Connects to the Starlink satellite network. | Included |
| Kickstand | Provides the supplied base for a suitable placement. | Included |
| Router 3 | Creates the local Wi-Fi network for your devices. | Included; Starlink describes it as Wi-Fi 6 hardware. |
| Starlink cable | Connects the terminal to the indoor equipment. | 15 m (49.2 ft) |
| AC cable | Connects the power supply to mains electricity. | Included |
| Power supply | Provides power to the system. | Included |
The 15 m cable is a product specification, not a guaranteed distance for every installation. Measure the route from the terminal location to the indoor equipment, allowing for bends and a safe entry point. If that route is longer, you may need a compatible replacement or extension cable.
Why another Starlink box may look different
Starlink’s general kit guidance says most kits include a router, but it specifically identifies Starlink Mini, Performance and Enterprise kits as exceptions that do not include one. Those products therefore require a separate networking arrangement or an accessory specified for that model. Check the listing and the model-specific setup guide before you pay; never infer contents from photographs of a different Starlink kit.
The same caution applies to bases, power equipment and cables. The Standard 4 X list above cannot be used as a universal inventory for every current Starlink product.
Do you need a mount or longer cable?
Use the supplied base only when it suits the location
The kickstand supplied with a Standard 4 X is not automatically a permanent roof installation. Your surface, exposure and cable route determine whether you need additional mounting hardware. Starlink documents wall, pivot, pipe-adapter, ridgeline, mobility and roof-rack mounts for selected models. Compatibility depends on both the terminal model and the installation surface.

Choose the mount after identifying the exact terminal, not before. A mount designed for another generation may not fit, and a mount intended for a vehicle or roof rack is not interchangeable with a wall or pole solution. Follow the current Starlink installation guide for the model and surface you have selected.
When a longer or replacement cable makes sense
Starlink lists 15 m and 45 m replacement or extension options for Standard 4 and Standard 4 X. A longer cable can help when the terminal must be placed farther from the router or when the cable needs to enter the building at a different point. It is an optional purchase, not a requirement for every buyer.
- Measure the complete path, including vertical runs and the distance needed to avoid sharp bends.
- Confirm that the cable is listed for your exact terminal family.
- Keep the connection protected and follow the manufacturer’s routing instructions rather than improvising with an unrelated network cable.
Which Starlink subscription should you choose?
| Your use pattern | Relevant plan category | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| One household at a registered, fixed address | Residential | Availability, local price and any service-address conditions. |
| Travel, temporary locations or service at another address | Roam | Allowance, in-motion rules, country coverage and local pricing. |
Residential: for a fixed home
Starlink describes Residential as household service for a registered location. Its support documentation says all Residential plans include unlimited data. The important limitation is location: Starlink says Residential does not support roaming. If you move the equipment to another address or want to use it while travelling, Residential is not the plan to rely on.
Recommended Free Tools
“Fixed” does not mean the terminal must remain in one room. It means the service is associated with the eligible land-based address supplied when you order. Before buying, enter that address in Starlink’s order flow and read the offer shown for that location.

Roam: for travel or another address
Starlink states that a Roam plan is required when you need service at another address or while travelling. Roam terms are market-dependent: the allowance, whether in-motion use is permitted, supported countries and available plan variants can differ by location. Treat those details as part of the offer displayed for your address, not as universal Starlink specifications.
If you only need a connection at your home, choosing Roam simply because the hardware can be moved may add complexity without solving a requirement. Conversely, a Residential plan is a poor fit if the core reason for buying Starlink is travel.
How much does Starlink cost?
There is no single worldwide price that can be quoted accurately. Starlink says plan availability and pricing vary by region and service address, and current plan pages show market-specific currencies and offerings. Hardware pricing can also differ by model and market.
Use the same address and date when comparing options. Enter the service address in Starlink’s order flow, record the displayed hardware price, plan price and any one-time fees, then check whether the selected plan is Residential or Roam. A price seen on a page for another country, city or earlier date should not be generalized to your account.

| Cost item | What is established |
|---|---|
| Hardware kit | Price is market- and model-dependent; the supplied material does not establish one universal amount. |
| Residential subscription | Price and availability depend on region and service address; all Residential plans are described as including unlimited data. |
| Roam subscription | Price, allowance, in-motion terms and coverage depend on the local offer. |
| Mounts and longer cables | Optional, model-specific accessories; price is not stated universally. |
Power options, including mobile installations
A normal household installation uses the supplied power supply and AC cable. If you are planning a vehicle, boat or battery-powered installation, do not assume the home power arrangement can be connected directly to a DC source.
Starlink documents a DC-DC power supply for relevant Standard 4 X mobile installations. It is an optional, model-specific accessory intended for use from a vehicle, boat or battery pack. Verify that your terminal is a compatible Standard 4 X variant and follow the electrical requirements in the current documentation before connecting it to a battery system.
- For a house: plan for a suitable mains outlet near the indoor equipment.
- For a vehicle or boat: confirm the DC accessory and the plan’s travel or in-motion rules separately; hardware compatibility does not automatically grant permission for every type of use.
- For a battery pack: check the required voltage, connectors and capacity in the model documentation rather than selecting a generic adapter.
How to order the right combination
- Define the use pattern. Decide whether the service will stay at one household address or travel between locations. This determines whether you should investigate Residential or Roam first.
- Enter the actual service address. Starlink uses the address to show local eligibility, currency, plan choices and pricing. Do not substitute a nearby town or a future destination.
- Identify the terminal model. Read the product name carefully. Standard 4 X, Standard 4, Mini, Performance and Enterprise kits can have different contents and accessory requirements.
- Inventory the box contents. Confirm whether a router, base, cable and power supply are included. For Standard 4 X, the listed inventory includes Router 3, kickstand, 15 m cable, AC cable and power supply.
- Plan the installation path. Decide where the terminal and router will sit, measure the cable route and identify the building entry point. Add a compatible 15 m or 45 m cable only if the supplied length is unsuitable.
- Select mounting hardware if needed. Match a wall, pivot, pipe-adapter, ridgeline, mobility or roof-rack mount to both the terminal model and the surface. Treat the supplied kickstand as one placement option, not proof that every roof or wall installation is complete.
- Choose the plan shown for that address. Read the data, roaming, in-motion and coverage terms displayed for the local Residential or Roam offer.
- Review the final order. Check one-time hardware and accessory charges separately from the recurring subscription, and save the model name and plan terms for future support questions.
Installation and activation checklist
Once the equipment arrives, use the current setup guide for the exact model. A sensible sequence is:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Open the box and verify the terminal, base, router (if listed), cables and power equipment against the model’s contents list.
- Place or mount the terminal using the supplied base or the compatible mount you selected. Do not force a part that is not listed for the model.
- Route the Starlink cable along the measured path and connect the terminal to the supplied indoor equipment.
- Connect the AC cable and power supply, or the documented DC-DC accessory for a compatible mobile Standard 4 X installation.
- Follow the model-specific instructions to complete network setup and activate the service on the address and plan you ordered.
- Confirm that your devices can join the Starlink router’s Wi-Fi network, or use the networking arrangement specified for a kit that omits a router.
Keep the packaging information and model number. Support and accessory compatibility questions are much easier to resolve when you can identify the exact terminal rather than simply saying “Starlink dish.”

Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them
Buying the dish without a plan
The hardware is not a standalone internet subscription. An active plan tied to an eligible address is required for service.
Assuming every kit includes Wi-Fi
Mini, Performance and Enterprise kits are identified by Starlink as router exceptions. Verify the listing before assuming you can connect phones, laptops or smart-home devices directly.
Choosing Residential for travel
Starlink’s current support guidance says Residential does not support roaming. Select a Roam offer when travel or another address is the primary use case, then read the local allowance and in-motion conditions.
Ordering an incompatible mount or cable
Mount and cable compatibility is model-specific. Identify the terminal first, then buy only the accessory documented for that model.
Using a foreign price as your budget
Currency, plan availability and pricing change by region and service address. Use the amount shown after entering your own address, and note the date of the quote.
Assuming a mobile power accessory is universal
The documented DC-DC option is for relevant Standard 4 X mobile installations. It is not evidence that every Starlink terminal can run from any vehicle, boat or battery pack.
A practical decision framework
- Fixed home, standard kit: Check a Standard 4 X or another currently offered residential kit, verify that the router and base are included, and select Residential for the registered address.
- Fixed home, unusual mounting: Add only the mount and cable that the model’s compatibility guide supports.
- Travel or multiple locations: Compare Roam terms for the service address, including allowance, supported countries and in-motion rules; do not rely on Residential roaming.
- Vehicle, boat or battery installation: Confirm the terminal model, compatible DC power accessory and plan permissions independently.
- Unclear local offer: Stop before checkout and use the address-specific Starlink order page. Universal price or coverage assumptions are not reliable.
Bottom line
A typical home buyer needs a Starlink terminal kit, its power equipment and an active Residential subscription for the registered address. Standard 4 X is documented with a terminal, kickstand, Router 3, 15 m cable, AC cable and power supply, but other kits—particularly Mini, Performance and Enterprise—may omit the router. Mounts, longer cables and DC power equipment are conditional, model-specific purchases. If you need to travel or use the service elsewhere, investigate Roam instead, and use your exact service address to see the current plan and price.
