It does not make a compromised device safe, hide all metadata, or determine who can retain, export, or administer workspace data. The protection depends on the app, feature, and data type involved.
What does end-to-end encryption protect?
E2EE describes a content boundary: content is encrypted at one endpoint and decrypted at an intended recipient’s endpoint. In Proton’s description of Proton Drive, files are encrypted on the user’s device, and keys are held by the user and chosen recipients. That is Proton’s account of its service model, not an independent verification of every feature in a workspace product. See Proton’s explanation of its threat model.

In that model, a person intercepting network traffic cannot simply read the encrypted content, and the provider should not be able to decrypt covered content using its own access alone. The precise claim depends on the product’s implementation and on whether the particular message, file, or workflow is actually covered.
As Proton puts it in its October 26, 2022 article describing Proton Drive’s threat model: “Nevertheless, if the device you use to access Proton Drive is compromised, attackers could be able to access your files.” This is Proton’s own description, not an independent audit.

- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
What E2EE does not protect
A device that has already decrypted the content
End-to-end encryption can limit who can decrypt content in transit and on a provider’s systems, but it cannot protect plaintext on a device that has already decrypted it. Malware, including a keystroke logger, may capture credentials or content; a compromised client can expose files or messages after decryption. A fake site or application can also trick someone into entering credentials.
Every kind of metadata
Content and metadata are different. Slack identifies account details and information such as message or file timing and sender and recipient as non-content data. Its documentation treats content and metadata as distinct categories that can be subject to different legal processes. Do not assume that encrypting message content hides who communicated, when, or other account and activity details.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5C NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5C NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5C NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
Workspace administration and data lifecycle rules
Encryption does not set an organization’s retention policy or prevent administrators from using controls that the product makes available. Slack says retention settings and export capabilities vary with plan and owner configuration. What is retained or exportable therefore depends on the workspace’s plan and settings, as well as the organization’s policies.

Uncovered features and workflows
A vendor’s broad statement about an encrypted workspace should not be extended automatically to every integration, data type, or collaboration feature. Search indexes, app and bot data, backups, and metadata may be handled differently from the message or file a user sees. Check documentation for the exact feature and workflow.

Four questions that clarify the threat model
- Can a network observer read intercepted traffic? Transport encryption is intended to protect data moving between a client and service. It does not by itself show that the service cannot decrypt data it receives.
- Can the provider decrypt stored content? Look for a feature-specific statement about endpoint encryption and who holds the keys. “Encrypted at rest” alone does not establish that the provider lacks decryption access.
- Can someone controlling a user’s device or client see plaintext? If a device is compromised, or a user is tricked into using a malicious client or entering credentials on a fake site, encryption may not prevent access at the endpoint.
- What exists outside the content claim? Check metadata, account data, backups, retention, exports, administrative controls, and how the provider handles legal requests.
Encryption labels are not interchangeable
“Encrypted” does not identify which data is covered or who controls the keys. Slack documents encryption in transit and at rest, including TLS 1.2 over HTTPS, and offers optional Enterprise Key Management (EKM). These are not grounds to describe Slack as end-to-end encrypted. Its security documentation and EKM documentation distinguish service encryption and customer key controls from the content categories covered. Slack notes that some categories may remain protected by Slack-controlled keys; customer-managed keys are therefore not synonymous with E2EE.
Proton describes its business workspace as including end-to-end encrypted communication and productivity tools such as Mail, Calendar, Drive, Docs, and Sheets. That is a vendor-described example, not proof that every integration or operation within each tool has the same protection. Check the documentation for the exact feature you plan to use on Proton Workspace.

How to compare workspace encryption claims
When assessing two or more apps, compare documented, feature-specific details rather than relying on an “encrypted” label.
- Encryption boundary: Is the claim endpoint-to-endpoint, or does it cover only data in transit or at rest?
- Covered data: Are messages and files covered? What about metadata, search indexes, app or bot data, and backups?
- Key control: Who holds or controls the keys? Can an administrator revoke or manage them? Are any categories still protected by provider-controlled keys?
- Feature scope: Which clients, integrations, and collaboration functions are included?
- Access and disclosure: What account information or metadata can the provider see, and what does its documentation say about disclosure?
- Workspace controls: How do retention, exports, backups, and administrator settings affect the data?
- Endpoint and account security: What protections are needed to keep devices, clients, and credentials from being compromised?
A hardware security key can strengthen account authentication, but it does not provide E2EE. Authentication and content encryption address different risks.
