What Edge AI Inference Means—and Why Workloads Are Moving Closer

Edge inference runs AI close to users or data, often as part of a tiered design spanning devices, nearby sites, telecom infrastructure, and cloud.

AI inference is moving closer to users and data, but that does not mean cloud computing is going away. Edge inference runs a model near where its input is created—on a device, at a local site, or in nearby telecom infrastructure—while cloud and regional systems continue to handle work that benefits from shared, elastic capacity. The practical question is where each part of an AI service should run.

What edge inference means

Inference is the act of using a trained AI model to produce an output, such as a camera detecting an object or an assistant generating a response. Edge inference places that computation close to the user or source of the data rather than sending every input to a distant cloud service. The “edge” can mean an endpoint, gateway, site server, telecom edge location, or other distributed infrastructure; it is not limited to AI running directly on a phone or sensor. AWS’s edge inference explainer describes the approach and its trade-offs.

Edge processing can reduce the amount of raw video or sensor data that must travel over a network, shorten response time, and help an organization keep sensitive inputs within a controlled environment. Those benefits depend on the application and its design: moving computation closer does not by itself guarantee lower cost, stronger security, or better performance.

Why inference is spreading outward

Cameras, industrial sensors, vehicles, and other connected systems can produce continuous streams of data. Sending all of that material to a centralized system can consume bandwidth and add delay. Local inference can instead identify relevant events or produce an immediate response, with only selected information sent upstream. This is especially useful when an application is interactive, handles high-volume media, or needs to remain useful during a degraded connection.

Privacy and data-control requirements are another reason to process inputs locally. Keeping data at a site may reduce transfers and simplify some boundaries, but it does not automatically make a deployment compliant or secure; access controls, retention, encryption, physical protection, and operational procedures still matter.

Forecasts point to growing interest, but they should be read as projections rather than measured outcomes. Network World reports Gartner forecasts that more than two-thirds of enterprise-managed data will be created and processed outside data centers or the cloud by 2028, and that more than two-thirds of enterprises globally will deploy edge AI by 2029, up from 10% in 2025. The article also attributes to IDC a forecast that half of enterprise AI inference workloads will run on endpoints or edge nodes by 2030. These are secondhand attributions to analyst forecasts, not independently verified adoption figures.

How the edge-to-cloud continuum works

Most practical architectures distribute work across several tiers instead of choosing between “all edge” and “all cloud.” A task can begin on a device, move to a nearby site for more demanding processing, and rely on regional or cloud infrastructure for shared services or workloads that can tolerate a longer network path.

Device and far edge

A camera, sensor, gateway, phone, or embedded computer can handle sensing and lighter inference close to the source. This tier is useful for fast local decisions and filtering, but endpoint hardware may have limited compute, memory, power, and cooling.

Near edge and telecom MEC

A site server or nearby mobile-network edge location can aggregate multiple device streams and run larger models than endpoints can support. In a March 2025 architecture example, AWS’s Smart-X design uses device and far-edge, near-edge 5G MEC, and AWS Region tiers. It describes local orchestration and caching alongside multi-camera aggregation and more advanced multimodal inference; it is an architecture illustration, not evidence of a general adoption rate.

Regional and cloud systems

Central infrastructure can supply pooled or elastic capacity, shared coordination, and centralized lifecycle management. It is a natural fit for tasks that do not require an immediate local response. A distributed pipeline can send selected events, summaries, or results upstream instead of transmitting every raw input.

Choose placement by the workload

Keep the “hot path”—the steps that determine an immediate response—near the user or data source when a WAN round trip would harm an interactive or safety-related experience. Centralize work when shared operations or elastic capacity matter more than local response time. In its September 2026 holographic AI design, Cisco keeps latency-sensitive application, retrieval, and inference on site while using central tools for policy and fleet lifecycle management.

Compare the behavior of the complete service, not a model benchmark in isolation. Useful decision criteria include:

  • End-to-end response: Measure the user-visible path, including network delay, retrieval, model processing, and rendering. Examine tail latency and jitter, not just an average.
  • Bandwidth and data movement: Estimate how much raw input, intermediate data, and output must cross the network, and the associated transfer costs.
  • Outage behavior: Determine which functions continue during WAN degradation and what happens when a local site or its power fails.
  • Data control: Identify where inputs, outputs, logs, and model artifacts are stored and who can access them.
  • Capacity and power: Check whether local hardware can serve expected concurrency and model size within its power and cooling limits.
  • Operations and security: Account for physical access, patching, model updates, monitoring, and recovery across every location.
  • Total cost: Include hardware, networking, energy, software, staffing, and the expected request volume—not just cloud compute rates.

Cloud-only, regional or hybrid, and site-local designs therefore represent trade-offs rather than a universal ranking. Cloud-only favors elastic capacity and centralized operations, but live turns depend on WAN conditions and data movement. Regional or hybrid placement can share resources while retaining some local control, at the cost of additional service boundaries and failure dependencies. Edge-first placement can offer locality and autonomy, but requires local capacity planning, site operations, and distributed hardware and update management. Cisco presents these categories for its interactive AI design; they are not universal performance guarantees.

What current examples show—and do not show

Several announcements illustrate different ways providers are building distributed inference, but vendor descriptions and performance claims should be treated as claims about their own offerings unless independently verified.

  • On-premises appliance: Qualcomm announced its AI On-Prem Appliance Solution on January 6, 2025, describing desktop or wall-mounted hardware for enterprise and industrial generative AI and computer vision. The company says its software suite spans on-premises and cloud deployment and named Aetina, Honeywell, and IBM among early supporters. Current availability and specifications are not established here. Qualcomm’s announcement
  • Inference nearer end users: Akamai announced Cloud Inference in 2025 as a way to run AI applications closer to users. Its press release claims up to three times the throughput, up to 2.5 times lower latency, and up to 86% savings versus traditional hyperscaler infrastructure. Those are Akamai’s own comparisons, not independent benchmark results. Akamai’s launch announcement
  • Distributed workload routing: In March 2026, Akamai announced AI Grid, describing orchestration across edge, regional, and core infrastructure and a rollout of NVIDIA RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell Server Edition GPUs across 4,400 locations. These are company-announced rollout and capability statements. Akamai’s AI Grid announcement
  • Interactive on-site inference: Cisco’s holographic AI paper describes a design target of less than one second for end-to-end interaction and less than 64 milliseconds for local inference to first chunk. It gives an expected serving baseline of about 24 tokens per second at concurrency one for AFM 4.5B on an AMX-enabled Intel Xeon platform. Cisco explicitly presents these figures as design targets or expected baselines, not guarantees for other hardware or deployments. Cisco’s design paper
  • Telco edge for physical AI: Ericsson argues that mobile-network-integrated compute can bring inference closer to physical AI devices and provide radio and network context. Its October 2026 discussion projects a compute-speed ceiling from 2026 to 2030 based on Ericsson’s scenario assumptions; the projection is not an independently verified benchmark. Ericsson’s article

Edge is a placement choice, not a default destination

Local infrastructure can have weaker hardware and fewer security controls than a cloud data center. It also creates physical exposure and a larger patching and operations footprint. Conversely, a cloud-dependent service can become slow or unavailable when the network path is impaired. The right architecture is the one that meets the workload’s response, privacy, capacity, and reliability needs while remaining supportable across its full lifecycle. For many systems, that means splitting inference across devices, nearby infrastructure, and central services rather than moving everything to one tier.
