On Steam, Early Access means you buy and can play the game in its current, unfinished state while development continues. It is different from pre-purchasing a finished game for later delivery. Steam also uses the separate term Advance Access for an optional early-play perk attached to selected pre-purchase editions. Because no particular RPG or platform is named here, check the game’s store page and edition terms before paying.
What you receive when you buy an Early Access RPG
A Steam Early Access purchase gives you a playable work-in-progress at the time of purchase. Valve says the game should be considered unfinished and should be worth its price in its current state—not only after planned features arrive. Its Steamworks Early Access documentation distinguishes that from pre-purchase: an Early Access game is delivered in playable form now, while a pre-purchased game is delivered at a future date.

That distinction matters for an RPG because features that shape the experience—such as quests, areas, systems, or story content—may change as development proceeds. Consider what is playable today, rather than treating the eventual version described by the developer as what you are buying now.

| Offer | What it means on Steam | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Early Access | You can play the current unfinished game when you buy it; development continues. | What the current build contains, its price, and the developer’s stated plans. |
| Pre-purchase with Advance Access | You pre-purchase the game, and a qualifying edition may include the perk of playing before official release. This is not an ongoing development model. | Which edition includes the perk and when early play starts. Terms vary by game and edition. |
Steam explains the Advance Access offering in its Advance Access FAQ. Do not assume every pre-order includes it, or that an Early Access label means a short head start before launch.
#1 Best Overall
- Total Warfare Edition includes additional playable characters, mini-games, and content previously available as DLC
- Combines roguelike-style deckbuilding with turn-based SRPGs for a brand-new experience
- Over 100 cards to collect and build a deck with, all with unique designs
How to judge whether the current build is worth buying
- Read the game’s Early Access information and questionnaire. Focus on the features and state of the build available now, as well as what the developer says remains to be done.
- Check current screenshots and gameplay material. Use these to assess what the game looks and plays like today, not as proof that planned content will arrive.
- Compare the current build with the price. Steam Support advises buyers to wait if they are not excited to play the game in its present state. The purchase decision should make sense even if updates take longer than hoped.
- Treat future features and dates as plans, not guarantees. Steam cautions that a game may change and its developer may be unable to finish it. A development roadmap can help explain intentions, but it cannot guarantee completion.
- Confirm the offer type and edition. Check whether the page says Early Access or describes a pre-purchase with Advance Access, which edition provides early play, and when that access begins.
Updates, full release, and refunds on Steam
Steam says Early Access buyers keep access as the game evolves and when it leaves Early Access. The developer decides when the game is ready to leave the program; there is no guaranteed completion date. Steam Support also says it will add a notice to an Early Access store page if there has been no developer update event for more than 12 months. That notice is a platform signal about update inactivity, not a prediction of when a particular RPG will release.
Steam Early Access purchases are covered by Steam’s standard refund policy. Eligibility considers both purchase date and playtime; review the current Steam Refunds terms before buying, especially if you expect to spend time evaluating an unfinished game.

What changes if the RPG is not on Steam?
The definitions and buyer rules above are Steam-specific. Other platforms or publishers may use “early access” more loosely, and the title alone does not identify the RPG, retailer, region, edition, or release date. Check the actual store page and publisher terms rather than assuming Steam’s access, carry-forward, or refund rules apply elsewhere.
