DVD region codes indicate where a DVD-Video disc is intended to play. If the disc’s code does not match the DVD player’s supported region, the player may refuse playback. Even when the region matches, the disc’s video format must also be supported by the player.
What DVD region codes mean
DVD region codes are geographic playback-compatibility codes used on DVD-Video discs and players. Sony Support explains that motion picture studios developed them to control the home release of movies in different countries. The code can therefore affect whether a disc plays on a particular player; it does not, by itself, describe the disc’s video format.

Sony’s U.S.-market guidance says its DVD players are Region 1 devices and do not play discs from other regions. That statement applies to the cited Sony products, not every player sold in the United States. Check the documentation for the exact player you own.

The number is commonly shown inside a globe symbol on the disc or case. A disc may display more than one region number; markings such as 0 or ALL indicate a disc coded to play in all regions, according to Sony. These markings describe the disc and do not guarantee that every player supports its video format, disc type, or other model-specific features.
Region code is not the same as video format
A matching region code is only one part of compatibility. The player must also support the disc’s video standard. For example, Sony’s guidance for its DVD players sold in the United States says they support NTSC but cannot play PAL or SECAM discs, regardless of whether the region codes match. This is specific to the products covered by that guidance; consult the manual for your own model.

When checking a disc, look for both its region marking and its video-format information on the disc or packaging. A “region-free” label alone does not establish that the player can display the disc’s video format.
How to troubleshoot a DVD that will not play
- Read the disc marking. Look for the globe icon or region number on the DVD or its case. Sony says multi-region discs may show more than one number, while discs coded for all regions may be marked 0 or ALL.
- Check the player’s region. Look in the player’s manual or device information for its supported region. A Philips manual instructs users to match the disc and player regions and says playback is unavailable when the codes differ.
- Check the video format separately. Find whether the disc is NTSC, PAL, or SECAM, then verify that the player supports that format. Do not assume a matching region means the video format is supported.
- If you are using a computer, check its drive documentation. Apple’s instructions for DVD Player on Mac say the disc region must match the Mac DVD drive’s region and warn that the drive allows only a maximum number of region changes. That guidance applies to the Mac DVD Player/drive context; it should not be assumed to describe every computer drive.
