1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsOffshore drilling day rates and rig utilization are shaped by the same market balance, but they measure different things. Rates reflect what operators pay for a rig and defined services; utilization measures the share of a specified fleet that is working or contracted under a stated definition. Demand for suitable rigs, effective available supply, rig capability, region, timing, and contract terms all matter—so there is no single universal offshore rig rate or utilization figure.
What do day rate and utilization measure?
Day rate
A drilling contractor supplies a rig and operating services to an oil and gas operator under a contract commonly priced around a daily rate for defined operating time. A quoted day rate is not automatically the full value of a contract: firm duration, options, mobilization, services, suspension, and downtime can change the revenue and working days represented by the headline.

Utilization
Utilization is the share of a specified rig population that is working or contracted according to the publisher’s definition. “Global contracted marketed utilization” covers the marketed fleet under that measure; a contractor’s fleet utilization covers its own rigs and accounting definitions. Percentages with different populations or definitions are not directly comparable.
How supply and demand influence the market
Operators’ exploration, development, and maintenance plans determine how many rigs they seek and when. When demand for rigs meeting technical and geographic requirements exceeds effective available supply, contractors generally have more pricing power. Weaker demand or the return of idle and suspended rigs can increase competition. This is a market mechanism, not a formula that predicts a specific rate.

Noble Corporation says increased global rig demand since 2021 supported rates for most rig classes, while rates moderated from highs in 2023 and 2024. The company also describes retirements of idle or less capable rigs as reducing supply. The Noble 2025 annual report provides company-level operating context, not a universal market quote.
Effective supply is narrower than the fleet count
The relevant supply is not every rig listed in a global fleet inventory. It is the capacity that can perform the job, reach the market, and work during the required period. Retirement removes capacity; suspension, reactivation time, shipyard delays, and relocation can affect whether and when a rig competes for work. Valaris’s fleet report documents suspended operations and delayed shipyard projects, illustrating why nominal fleet counts can overstate immediately available supply.

Why rig class, capability, and region matter
Jackups primarily serve a different water-depth and operating environment from floating rigs such as semisubmersibles and drillships. Even within a class, equipment and technical specifications determine which programs a rig can undertake. A high-spec jackup, for example, is not interchangeable with every other jackup, and neither is comparable to a deepwater drillship.

Suitable competition, operator demand, mobilization needs, and contract timing are local considerations. Valaris’s May 2026 fleet status report lists work in Brazil, Brunei, Indonesia, the UK and Dutch North Sea, Australia, and the Middle East; its individual contracts therefore illustrate specific market settings rather than a representative global price index.

Dated benchmarks: compare like with like
The figures below are useful reference points, not October 2026 spot quotes. They cover different populations and definitions, so they should not be combined into a single market average.
| Publisher and date | Rig segment and scope | Reported measure |
|---|---|---|
| Noble Corporation, fiscal 2025 | Noble fleet, floaters | 67% average utilization; $402,703 average day rate |
| Noble Corporation, fiscal 2025 | Noble fleet, jackups | 64% average utilization; $185,337 average day rate |
| S&P Global Commodity Insights, Q1 2025 averages published in February 2025 snapshot | Worldwide high-spec jackups | $140,000 per day average day rate |
| S&P Global Commodity Insights, Q1 2025 averages published in February 2025 snapshot | Worldwide high-spec ultra-deepwater floaters | $537,872 per day average day rate |
| S&P Global Commodity Insights, Q1 2025 averages published in February 2025 snapshot | Worldwide ultra-deepwater floaters | $389,100 per day average day rate |

| S&P Global Commodity Insights, February 2025 snapshot | Global contracted marketed jackups | 90.9% utilization |
Noble’s rate and utilization pairs are averages for its own fleet, not global prices or total-industry utilization. S&P’s utilization figures are contracted-marketed measures, not total-fleet percentages. Its day-rate figures distinguish high-spec from broader ultra-deepwater floaters; those categories should not be treated as identical. The February 2025 snapshot also described limited fixtures, demand deferred to 2026 or 2027, rate declines, and plans to scrap lower-end units. Those were observations at that date, not a current forecast. See the S&P Global Petrodata snapshot.

How contract terms change the meaning of a rate
A contract headline may omit the factors needed to understand its economics. Firm days represent committed work; options are possible additional work, not firm contracted days. Extensions, rate adjustments, suspension clauses, reimbursed services, mobilization and demobilization, and downtime can all change the value and utilization implied by an award. Valaris’s May 2026 fleet report includes examples of a drillship extension with a day-rate adjustment, a jackup extension adding backlog, and contracted operations that were suspended.
Recommended Free Tools
Valaris reported approximately $4.9 billion in contract backlog in its May 4, 2026 fleet status report, up from approximately $4.7 billion as of February 17, 2026. Backlog is contracted work value, not a day-rate measure; it should not be read as a price per rig-day or as proof that all listed rigs are currently operating. The Valaris fleet status report gives contract-specific details.

A practical checklist for comparing rates or utilization
- Match rig class and capability: compare jackups with jackups or floaters with floaters, and account for specification differences.
- Match geography and water-depth setting: regional competition and mobilization can change the relevant market.
- Identify the date: separate the report date from the contract start date and do not present historical benchmarks as current quotes.
- Check the utilization denominator: establish whether the figure is marketed, contracted-marketed, or a contractor’s own fleet measure.
- Separate firm days from options: optional extensions are not guaranteed working time.
- Read the contract basis: distinguish operating day rate from total contract value or backlog, and check treatment of mobilization, services, suspension, and downtime.
