Indian IT shares often rise or fall together because investors reprice the same underlying assumptions: enterprise technology spending, outsourcing demand, foreign-currency revenue, margins, AI economics and global risk appetite. They do not move identically, however. Customer mix, geography, service lines, deal conversion, execution, valuation and index weight can produce very different results for individual companies.
What links Indian IT stocks in the first place?
Most large Indian IT-services companies sell technology work to enterprises, with a substantial share of customers and revenue outside India. That creates a common set of earnings sensitivities. When investors expect US companies, banks or other large clients to delay projects, several providers can face lower growth expectations at the same time. When spending on cloud migration, cybersecurity, data platforms, artificial intelligence (AI) implementation or cost-saving programmes is expected to accelerate, the same companies may be re-rated together.

Share prices move on expected future cash flows, not only on the quarter that has just been reported. A change in expected bookings, project starts, cancellations, utilisation, pricing or management guidance can therefore affect many stocks before their reported revenue changes. The effect is strengthened by common sector labels, benchmark funds and derivatives. Yet co-movement is not sameness: a company with a different customer concentration, margin profile or currency hedge can diverge sharply from its peers.

The Nifty IT benchmark and the mechanics of co-movement
NSE Indices describes Nifty IT as a benchmark intended to capture the performance of India’s IT segment. Its ecosystem includes exchange-traded funds and domestic index funds. Those vehicles give investors a way to buy or sell sector exposure without selecting each company, so changes in allocations can create simultaneous demand or selling in several constituents.

A benchmark does not make its constituents economically identical. Weighting means a heavily represented company can influence the index more than a smaller constituent, while fund flows can affect all holdings at once. The material reviewed here does not establish a current statistical estimate for constituent correlations or index concentration, so a precise correlation number would be misleading.
A dated example, not a permanent rule
On April 10, 2026, eight of the ten Nifty IT constituents declined even though the Nifty 50 rose 0.87%, according to a Business Standard report hosted in the NSE archive. This illustrates a sector-wide reaction that differed from the broad market; it is not a current return figure or proof that IT shares always move together.
In that report, Kranti Bathini, equity strategist at WealthMills Securities, said: “Due to uncertainty, buying interest is absent at this point in time with respect to IT stocks in the short-to-medium term, IT stocks are right now in a consolidation phase.” That is attributed market commentary, not a measured causal finding.

Driver 1: Enterprise budgets and client demand
Technology services revenue depends on customers approving and starting work. Discretionary transformation projects can be postponed when management teams face weak sales, high financing costs or geopolitical uncertainty. A slowdown in one major vertical can affect several vendors if they serve similar clients.

The reverse is also true. Programmes that reduce a client’s operating cost, modernise legacy systems, secure data or deploy AI can remain priorities even when discretionary spending is cautious. LTIMindtree’s FY2025 industry review, reporting NASSCOM estimates, put Indian IT-industry revenue at USD 283 billion, with projected year-over-year growth of 5.1% in FY25. It put Indian IT exports at USD 224 billion, with projected FY25 growth of 4.6%. These are period-specific industry estimates reported in that annual-report review, not a live forecast.
The same review said growth was largely driven by the United States and the banking, financial-services and insurance (BFSI) sector. It also reported the NASSCOM Annual Enterprise CXO Survey 2025 finding that 82% of surveyed CXOs planned to increase digital spending by at least 5% compared with calendar year 2024. That is a survey result as reported by the company, not a universal prediction for every enterprise or every subsequent year.
What investors watch
- New contracts and the size and duration of booked work.
- The time between a deal announcement, project start and recognised revenue.
- Client cancellations, scope reductions and discretionary versus mandatory work.
- Exposure to US and European economies and to sectors such as BFSI, retail, manufacturing and healthcare.
- Management guidance for revenue growth, utilisation and demand.
If several providers report cautious clients or slower conversion from bookings to revenue, analysts can reduce estimates across the sector, producing a common price reaction even when each company’s order book differs.

Large deal announcements are useful but do not equal immediate sales. A contract may be phased, dependent on a client’s internal approvals or offset by lost work elsewhere. Investors therefore combine bookings with pipeline quality, project starts, renewal rates, utilisation and the company’s record of converting signed work into revenue.

Quarterly results can move a group of stocks when they alter the expected direction of the industry. A cluster of conservative forecasts may signal that customers are delaying decisions. Conversely, evidence of improving discretionary demand can lift several valuations before financial statements show the full effect.
Analyst interpretations are opinions rather than established facts. The April 2026 market report described mixed readings of company results and concern about forward earnings visibility amid AI uncertainty. Those observations should be attributed to that report rather than presented as an objective verdict on every company.
Driver 3: The rupee and foreign-currency exposure
Export-heavy businesses report foreign-currency sales in rupees. If a company receives a fixed amount of US dollars, a stronger rupee generally translates that receipt into fewer rupees, all else equal. A weaker rupee can increase the translated value. The actual earnings effect depends on hedging, where employees and delivery centres are located, foreign-currency expenses, contract clauses, billing currency and pricing responses.

Wipro reported that 97.5% of segment revenue came from exports in fiscal 2026. These figures show why currency is a shared sector trigger, but they do not imply identical sensitivity: the companies can hedge differently and have different cost bases.

Why depreciation is not a guaranteed profit boost
When the rupee depreciates, firms may use the benefit to restore competitiveness, invest in hiring and training, absorb higher imported costs, or pass some productivity and currency gains to clients through pricing. A cautious demand environment can limit the amount retained as margin. Currency gains can therefore appear in revenue translation without producing an equivalent increase in operating profit.
Driver 4: Margins, wages, utilisation and productivity
Revenue growth does not map one-for-one into earnings. Employee compensation, subcontracting, hiring, attrition, bench levels, travel, utilisation, pricing and automation all affect operating margin. Skill shortages can force a company to pay more or use subcontractors; weak demand can leave staff underutilised. A project with attractive headline revenue may still dilute margin if it requires scarce specialists or aggressive pricing.
Productivity improvements can protect margins by allowing the same work to be delivered with fewer hours. They can also be reinvested in training and new capabilities or shared with customers to win renewals. The outcome depends on contract structure and competitive pressure. Investors should examine each company’s margin bridge rather than assume that a favourable currency move or an AI tool automatically raises profitability.

A practical margin checklist
- Are wage increases and subcontracting costs rising faster than billing rates?
- Is utilisation improving because of genuine demand or because hiring has slowed?
- Are price concessions being offered to protect volumes?
- Are productivity gains retained, reinvested or passed to customers?
- Does the company disclose a sustainable margin range or only a one-quarter benefit?
Driver 5: AI is both an opportunity and a business-model question
AI can create work in consulting, data engineering, model deployment, infrastructure, cybersecurity, governance and application modernisation. Enterprises may need help redesigning processes and integrating AI into existing systems. Those opportunities can lift demand across multiple service providers.
The same technology can reduce the labour hours required for some traditional development, testing, support or documentation tasks. Clients may seek lower prices if automation improves supplier productivity, and new models could alter which layers of the services value chain are most valuable. That creates uncertainty about revenue mix, pricing and headcount even when demand for AI-related projects is strong.
Wipro’s fiscal-2026 filing reproduced a NASSCOM expectation that Indian IT-services growth in FY2026 would be supported by enterprise AI adoption, data-centre investment and global capability centres. The filing also discussed pricing pressure and skill constraints. The evidence therefore supports two competing channels: AI can expand the market for specialised work while reducing the hours or prices attached to some existing work. The net effect must be assessed company by company.
Driver 6: Geopolitics, rates and risk appetite
Globally exposed companies can be repriced when geopolitical tensions threaten client investment or make investors reduce risk. The April 2026 report cited geopolitical turbulence and cautious enterprise budgets as headwinds for the sector. Broader interest rates, valuation multiples, global equity sentiment and foreign-investor flows can also move share prices, especially for companies valued on long-dated growth.
These are market mechanisms, not a quantified explanation for every daily move. A stock can fall because its valuation was high even when its latest results were solid, or rise on improving risk appetite before its operating data changes.
Why companies diverge despite the same sector headline
Use the following axes when comparing Indian IT companies or deciding whether a sector fund suits your objective:

For an index product, also verify the current constituent list and weights, expense ratio, tracking difference and whether the vehicle is an exchange-traded fund or an index mutual fund. Those values change and should be taken from the latest fund documents; the information here does not establish current figures.
How to interpret a sector-wide move
- Identify the common trigger. Check whether the move followed currency data, a major client-spending signal, an industry result, an AI announcement or a broad risk-off session.
- Separate expectation from reported performance. Ask whether estimates changed for future quarters rather than focusing only on the latest revenue number.
- Check the currency and margin bridge. Determine how much of the change came from translation, pricing, utilisation, wages or productivity.
- Compare company exposure. Review customer concentration, geography, service mix and deal conversion before assuming every constituent faces the same risk.
- Check valuation and index mechanics. A benchmark rebalance or fund flow can amplify a move that began with modest news.
- Use the correct time frame. FY25, FY26 and calendar-year comparisons are not interchangeable, and a one-day market reaction does not establish a long-term trend.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming a weaker rupee guarantees higher profit.
- Treating one company’s export percentage as representative of every Indian IT provider.
- Equating a large deal announcement with immediate, high-margin revenue.
- Concluding that AI will necessarily destroy or expand the entire services sector.
- Using the April 2026 co-movement example as a present-day market statistic.
- Confusing an index benchmark with an investment product or assuming all funds tracking it have identical costs and tracking results.
Bottom line
Indian IT stocks can move together because they share exposure to enterprise technology budgets, overseas customers, exchange rates, labour economics, AI expectations and global risk appetite. Index funds and common sector narratives can reinforce that response. The connection ends where company-specific details begin: customer concentration, deal conversion, pricing, margins, hedging, AI capability, valuation and benchmark weight determine who benefits and who lags. Treat sector moves as a starting signal, then test the underlying earnings mechanism for each company.
