Construction equipment prices depend on the machine’s specification and the selling dealer’s terms; delivery estimates depend on whether the right machine is available in inventory or must be supplied from a factory. There is no universal price list or lead-time formula: request a dated quote for the exact configuration and delivery location, with inclusions and a delivery commitment stated in writing.
What determines the quoted price?
Model, configuration, age, and features
Price is specific to the machine being quoted. Caterpillar identifies configuration, age, and features as pricing factors in its Buying & Renting Cat Equipment guidance. The model and selected options matter, as do attachments and technology included in the proposed package. For used equipment, age, hours, condition, and maintenance history help define what is being offered.

Dealer terms and what the displayed price includes
A displayed price or MSRP may not be the delivered transaction cost. Caterpillar’s buying-options terms say that certain prices exclude items such as taxes, shipping, surcharges, assembly, destination or freight charges, delivery, unbundled attachments, and protection plans. Which exclusions apply depends on the specific price display and region; authorized dealers set actual sale terms. Ask for an itemized, written quote and compare delivered totals rather than headline prices. Caterpillar buying options and terms

Manufacturing costs and market conditions
Transportation, components, raw materials, labor, supply-chain disruptions, and trade policies can affect manufacturers’ costs. These pressures do not translate into a standard surcharge for every machine: the resulting price depends on the model, market, dealer, and commercial terms. Manufacturer-reported price realization can also reflect volume, currency, and other conditions, so company-wide results should not be read as the price change for a specific machine.

The scale of recent tariff disclosures illustrates why context matters. In its 2026 Q1 Form 10-Q, Caterpillar forecast $2.2–$2.4 billion in tariff costs for 2026, based on tariffs implemented since the start of 2025 and expected to be in place over the year. The company also expected about $700 million in tariff costs in Q2 2026, with about half in Construction Industries and the balance across other segments. These are dated company forecasts, not per-machine charges or industry totals. Caterpillar quarterly results and filings
Deere reported a $372 million direct impact from incremental import tariffs in the first six months of 2026, net of tariff recovery described in its 2026 Q2 Form 10-Q. That figure excludes effects on suppliers and market demand; it is company-specific and does not establish a surcharge on any buyer’s quote. Deere quarterly results and filings

Total cost of ownership
Purchase price is only one part of the decision. Caterpillar advises buyers to consider total cost of ownership and equipment upkeep. Depending on expected use, compare operating and service costs, parts support, uptime, financing or rental terms, and how long you expect to keep or use the machine. CNH Industrial also identifies performance and reliability, technology, dealer and service networks, after-sales support, and pricing as competitive factors in the construction equipment market. What determines lead time?
Dealer stock, distribution-center supply, or factory order
A machine already in a dealer’s inventory may be available sooner than one awaiting factory production, but inventory status alone is not a delivery promise. Caterpillar says delivery times vary with product availability at its factories and product distribution centers. Confirm whether the exact configuration is physically in stock, allocated to your order, or still waiting for production or shipment.

Dealer inventory planning and demand
Dealers make inventory decisions based on anticipated demand and delivery times, as well as seasonality, macroeconomic conditions, and rental rates. As a result, a company-wide inventory figure cannot tell you whether a particular model is available at your local dealer. Caterpillar reported that its machine dealer inventory decreased by about $500 million during 2025 and expected an increase in 2026 to offset that decrease. This describes Caterpillar’s dealer inventory, not stock across the market. Caterpillar annual reports
Production constraints, configuration, and destination
Strong demand, component availability, transport limitations, and supply-chain interruptions can affect production and delivery, but manufacturer filings do not provide a universal lead-time formula. A specialized configuration or attachment may also affect availability; the destination, freight route, and dealer preparation matter to the promised arrival date. Ask the dealer to tie the estimate to the exact configuration and delivery location, and to explain what assumptions could change it.

How to compare quotes fairly
Use the same comparison basis for each seller. Two quotes are not comparable if one includes attachments and delivery while the other prices a bare machine at the dealer.
