Caterpillar’s revenue is driven by equipment and service demand across construction, mining, energy, transportation and other markets, but reported sales also move with dealer inventories, pricing, currency and inter-segment activity. Profit depends on what those sales earn after manufacturing costs, tariffs, restructuring, segment mix and financing costs—so revenue can rise even as margins fall.
How Caterpillar makes money
Caterpillar earns revenue from machinery and equipment, engines, power-generation products, turbines, locomotives, services and customer financing. Its three primary operating segments are Construction Industries, Resource Industries, and Power & Energy. Financial Products is a separate segment that provides financing and related services.

Construction Industries
This segment reflects demand for construction equipment across regions and the timing of sales to dealers. Its results can therefore respond both to activity among end users and to dealers’ decisions about how much equipment to hold.
Resource Industries
Resource Industries serves mining, heavy construction, quarry and aggregates, and rail activity. Its results depend on demand across those markets, which need not move in step with construction demand.

What Caterpillar’s 2025 results show
Caterpillar reported $67.6 billion in sales and revenues for 2025, 4% above the $64.8 billion reported for 2024. The company’s FY2025 results attributed the increase to $3.4 billion of higher sales volume, partly offset by $0.8 billion of unfavorable price realization.
| Measure | 2025 | 2024 |
|---|---|---|
| Sales and revenues | $67.6 billion | $64.8 billion |
| Operating profit margin | 16.5% | 20.2% |
| Adjusted operating profit margin | 17.2% | 20.7% |
All figures in the table are Caterpillar-reported full-year results. The adjusted operating profit margin excludes restructuring costs in both years; it is not the same measure as reported operating margin.

The contrast is the key to understanding Caterpillar’s performance: higher sales do not guarantee higher profitability. In 2025, revenue rose while operating margin contracted. Profitability depends not only on how much Caterpillar sells, but also on the prices it realizes, costs of making and delivering products, restructuring charges, and the mix of businesses generating the sales.
How to read Caterpillar’s revenue changes
Reported revenue is not a direct measure of end-user demand. Caterpillar’s sales bridge separates several influences, and each tells a different part of the story.
End-user demand and equipment volume
When customers buy more equipment, Caterpillar can ship more units and increase sales volume. Caterpillar said that higher equipment sales to end users were the primary driver of its full-year 2025 volume growth. Volume is a stronger clue about unit activity than revenue alone, but it is still only one part of the sales change.

Caterpillar sells through independent dealers, so shipments to dealers can change when dealers build or draw down their inventories—even if end-user demand has not changed by the same amount. In Q4 2025, dealer inventory was about flat, compared with a $1.3 billion decline in Q4 2024. Caterpillar identified that difference as one factor in the year-over-year sales-volume comparison.

Price realization
Price realization measures the effect of changes in realized selling prices on reported sales. It contributed negatively to Caterpillar’s 2025 sales bridge: the $0.8 billion unfavorable effect partly offset the volume increase. Pricing also matters to profit, but a price increase does not translate automatically into margin growth if manufacturing or other costs rise faster.
Currency and inter-segment items
Because Caterpillar reports globally, exchange-rate movements can change the value of overseas sales when translated into its reporting currency. The company’s quarterly sales bridge identifies currency separately, alongside volume, price realization, and inter-segment and other items. Those bridge components should not be treated as interchangeable measures of customer demand.
Services and the installed base
Caterpillar describes its products and services as supported by a global dealer network. Services complement equipment sales and can provide revenue related to equipment already in use. The reported information here does not establish a specific service-revenue contribution or growth rate, so equipment and service growth should not be assumed to track one another.

In Q2 2026, Caterpillar reported consolidated sales and revenues of $20.543 billion, up 24% from $16.569 billion in Q2 2025. Segment sales were uneven, illustrating why a company-wide growth rate can conceal different end-market conditions.

Manufacturing costs and tariffs
More volume can add profit, but that benefit can be outweighed by higher costs. In Q4 2025, Caterpillar reported $19.133 billion in sales and revenues, 18% above Q4 2024, while operating profit fell 9% to $2.660 billion. The company attributed the profit decline chiefly to $1.030 billion of unfavorable manufacturing costs and $282 million of higher restructuring costs, partly offset by the profit contribution from higher volume. Caterpillar said higher tariffs largely explained the manufacturing-cost pressure.
Price versus cost
Realized prices support profitability when they rise relative to costs; unfavorable pricing can put pressure on margins. The relevant comparison is therefore not just whether sales prices or revenue increased, but whether pricing gains kept pace with manufacturing and other costs.

Restructuring costs affected reported 2025 profitability and contributed to the Q4 2025 year-over-year profit decline. Caterpillar’s adjusted operating margin removes restructuring costs for the years shown, while reported operating margin includes them. When comparing results, use the same measure and period on both sides.

Segment mix and execution
Profit trends can diverge across Caterpillar’s businesses. In Q4 2025, segment profit increased 25% for Power & Energy, while it declined 12% for Construction Industries and 24% for Resource Industries. Those segment comparisons help explain why a consolidated result may not reflect the direction of every operation.
Financing economics
For Financial Products in Q4 2025, higher average earning assets supported revenue, while lower average financing rates partly offset that lift. Segment profit benefited from insurance margins, earning assets and lower credit-loss provisions. These drivers can change independently of the equipment sales that dominate the other segments.
How much weight to put on retail sales statistics
Caterpillar’s Q2 2026 retail data provide directional detail about end markets and regions. The company reported Power & Energy retail sales up 33% overall, including power generation up 72%, oil and gas up 6%, and industrial down 8%; Construction Industries world retail sales were up 22%; Resource Industries total retail sales were up 17%, including rail up 272%. These figures are Caterpillar-published comparisons with the prior-year period, not audited revenue growth rates.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Caterpillar says its retail information is based primarily on unaudited reports voluntarily supplied by independent dealers. The reports are not subject to Caterpillar’s internal controls over financial reporting and may be incomplete or inaccurate. The company characterizes them as indicators of approximate trends, direction and magnitude—not substitutes for audited SEC financial statements—and says it does not undertake to update or adjust prior-period retail information.
Comparisons also require care because Caterpillar recast its segment classification in March 2026; earlier retail data may not have been recast. Retail statistics are useful context for possible demand patterns, but reported financial results remain the appropriate basis for claims about revenue and profit.
What Caterpillar’s results do—and do not—establish
The company’s reported results and explanations show how volume, pricing, currency, dealer inventory, costs, segment mix and financing conditions affected the periods described. They do not, by themselves, establish that the same drivers will dominate future periods. For example, Q2 2026 growth should not be extrapolated into a full-year 2026 outcome.
In its January 2026 FY2025 results release, Caterpillar CEO Joe Creed described the company’s centennial year as “underscored by the highest full-year sales and revenues in Caterpillar’s history and a single-quarter record of $19.1 billion.”
