There is no universal driver checklist that makes every computer run faster. On a Windows PC, start with Windows Update; install another driver only if a device is missing, malfunctioning, or needs a compatible security fix. For a Mac running macOS, use Software Update. A Windows installation on a Mac through Boot Camp follows a separate Apple support-software workflow.
What drivers do you need on a new PC?
A driver lets Windows communicate with a hardware device. The essential drivers are the ones Windows needs for the specific computer and operating system to use its hardware correctly—not a standard bundle everyone should download. Windows Update is the recommended starting point for Windows 11 and Windows 10: it installs recommended drivers automatically, while optional driver updates are available for you to review and choose. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, according to Microsoft. If your PC still runs Windows 10, distinguish driver availability from operating-system support: installing drivers does not restore Windows 10 support. Check which Windows release is installed and consider the implications of using an unsupported operating system.
How do you install a missing or problem driver?
- Check Windows Update first. Open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates. Review available optional driver updates rather than installing them indiscriminately. Microsoft’s Windows Update guidance covers both automatic recommended updates and optional updates.
- Identify the exact device and computer. For a laptop or prebuilt desktop, use the computer maker’s support page for the exact model. For hardware you installed separately, use that component’s manufacturer support page. Check the device name in Device Manager if you need to identify it.
- Match the package to your system. Confirm that the driver is for the exact hardware, your Windows version, and your system architecture. Do not assume a package for a similar model or a different Windows release will work.
- Download only from an official source. Microsoft advises getting a needed driver from the device manufacturer’s official site and avoiding other driver-download sites. Its Device Manager instructions explain the manual update route.
- Install through Device Manager if needed. In Device Manager, locate the device, open its context menu, choose Update driver, and follow the prompts to select the downloaded driver. The precise prompts can vary with the package and Windows version.
Should you install every optional driver or choose the newest date?
No. Optional means you can review and choose the update; it is not a direction to install every listed package. Install one when it matches your exact device and resolves a real missing-device, compatibility, or security issue.

A displayed driver date is not a reliable way to rank packages. Microsoft notes that manufacturers use different version and date conventions, and the date metadata alone does not show whether a driver is best for your device. Windows uses information in driver files to target the intended hardware. Compare compatibility and the problem addressed, not just the date or version label. What if Windows blocks a driver?
A blocked kernel driver points to a signing or security compatibility issue. Windows Code Integrity checks that kernel drivers are cryptographically signed by a trusted authority. Do not disable protection or download a replacement from an unofficial site. Check Windows Update, then the hardware or software vendor’s official support page for a compatible signed package. Microsoft’s kernel-mode code-signing policy describes the policy; because enforcement details can change, consult the current page for the applicable Windows version.

What drivers does Windows on a Mac need?
Windows installed on a Mac through Boot Camp needs Apple’s Windows support software for Mac-specific features, including the keyboard, trackpad, audio, camera, display controls, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi. Boot Camp Assistant normally opens the support-software installer during Windows installation. If it does not, or one of those features has a problem, use Apple’s instructions for downloading and installing Windows support software.

Apple’s manual download procedure calls for a USB flash drive with at least 16 GB of capacity, formatted as MS-DOS (FAT). This requirement applies to that Boot Camp procedure, not ordinary Windows driver installation. Apple also notes that a Mac with an AMD video card may need an AMD graphics driver update if graphics have problems in Windows.

What about a Mac running macOS?
For a Mac running macOS natively, use Apple menu > System Settings > General > Software Update to find and install compatible Apple software updates. Apple recommends installing the latest macOS version compatible with the Mac model; Apple’s Software Update guidance explains the process. Windows PC driver packages are not the way to update native macOS hardware support.

- System match: It supports your Windows release and system architecture.
- Source: It comes from Windows Update or the hardware maker’s official support site.
- Compatibility and signing: Windows accepts it under its driver security policy.
- Reason to install: It addresses a real missing-device, compatibility, or security issue.
Installing every latest driver is not an established way to improve every computer’s speed. The guidance here supports keeping hardware compatible and functional; it does not establish a quantified performance gain from blanket driver updates.
