Double data rate (DDR) means memory transfers data on both the rising and falling edges of a clock signal. Using both edges allows two transfers per clock cycle. In RAM specifications, DDR describes how data is transferred; names such as DDR4 and DDR5 identify different generations of memory.
What does double data rate mean?
A clock signal alternates between rising and falling edges. DDR memory uses both edges to transfer data, rather than using just one edge for each clock cycle. Micron describes this as increasing data throughput. Micron’s DDR5 product information explains the term in this context.

DDR is a description of transfer timing, not the name of one specific memory generation. DDR5 is one generation of DDR SDRAM; DDR4 is an earlier generation.

RAM is the broad category for a computer’s working memory. DRAM, or dynamic random-access memory, is a type of RAM. SDRAM is DRAM synchronized to a system clock, and DDR5 is a generation of DDR SDRAM. The terms describe different levels: the memory category, the memory technology, and its transfer approach or generation.

What do DDR speed labels mean?
Memory transfer rates are commonly given in megatransfers per second (MT/s). Clock frequency is measured in megahertz (MHz). Since DDR transfers data on both clock edges, the transfer rate and clock frequency are related, but they are not interchangeable measurements.
Micron lists DDR4 data rates of 600–3200 MT/s and DDR5 data rates of 4800–8800 MT/s on its product information page. These are the ranges stated by Micron; the rates available to a particular computer depend on its memory and platform support.

Can DDR4 and DDR5 memory be used in the same system?
No. DDR4 and DDR5 are physically and electrically incompatible, according to Micron. A DDR4 module cannot substitute for DDR5, or vice versa. Before buying memory, check the computer or motherboard documentation for the supported generation and module form factor. Also verify the capacity and transfer rate the specific system supports.
Does DDR5 always provide more bandwidth?
Not by a fixed amount in every computer or workload. In a 2025 white-paper simulation, Micron reported approximately 1.36× effective bandwidth for DDR5-3200 compared with DDR4-3200, and approximately 1.87× for DDR5-4800 compared with DDR4-3200. The simulation assumed an x64 interface, 64-byte random accesses, 66% reads, dual-rank x4 simulation, and 16Gb. These are results for those modeled conditions, not a guarantee of equivalent performance gains in real systems. Micron’s 2025 DDR5 bandwidth white paper describes the methodology and results.
