It would welcome newcomers while giving fans the thrill of recognizing a melody they love.
There isn’t one template for a video game concert
Real productions range from concerts built around one game to programs that move across a catalog, and from orchestral performances to hybrids that combine classical instruments with electronic sound. Visuals and audience participation vary too. Those are different creative choices—not a checklist every show needs to satisfy.

How I’d shape the dream show
Let the music travel between textures
I’d start with a versatile ensemble: strings and brass for a sweeping theme, percussion and electric guitar for a high-energy battle cue, then synthesizers for a quieter, stranger world. The transitions should feel composed rather than like a playlist switching tracks. Paradox in Concert offers one precedent for blending classical and modern electronic soundscapes in music drawn from Crusader Kings, Europa Universalis, Hearts of Iron, Victoria and Stellaris.

Make visuals follow the music
Projected gameplay and cinematic sequences could give each piece a setting, but the images should serve the performance rather than compete with it. ELDEN RING Symphonic Adventure describes synchronized 4K game montages, lighting and surround effects; The Witcher in Concert pairs live music with gameplay and visuals. These examples suggest two ways a show can make a game’s world part of the concert experience.

Give the audience one meaningful choice
I’d save a vote for a moment when it can genuinely change what happens—perhaps choosing between two encore pieces or deciding which world the show visits next. VG Concerts describes Extra Lives as a narrated, choose-your-own-adventure performance in which audience votes by phone steer the story while a live band plays. That’s an inventive format, not a standard feature of video game concerts.
Different formats make different trade-offs
| Format | What it offers | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Single-game story concert | A focused musical and visual journey through one game. ELDEN RING Symphonic Adventure describes synchronized story montages; The Witcher in Concert pairs gameplay and visuals with orchestral performance and traditional instruments. | Best suited to people interested in that game’s world. The Witcher in Concert notes that some imagery is best suited to audiences aged 16 and over; guidance may vary by location. |
| Multi-game spectacle | A broad program with orchestras and choirs, video, lighting, effects, soloists and interactive segments, as described by Video Games Live. | Variety can welcome fans of different games, though any one title may receive less time than in a single-game show. |
| Publisher-catalog retrospective | A musical overview spanning multiple series. Paradox in Concert draws from five named franchises and describes a hybrid classical/electronic sound. | Its range is tied to one publisher’s catalog, so the selection may be less familiar to people who do not play those games. |
| Audience-steered live show | A band performs within a story shaped by audience votes, as in VG Concerts’ Extra Lives. | Participation changes the format; it is not simply a conventional concert with visuals. |
What would make the show work beyond the fan service?
A recognizable theme can be an emotional payoff, but the arrangement should still communicate its mood to someone who has never played the game. I’d want the program to balance those moments with music that stands on its own, and to make clear in advance whether projected material includes intense imagery. Video Games Live describes its event as an immersive concert featuring music from popular games; its official page also gives the organizer’s historical summary of “over 500 shows in 42 countries on 5 continents,” without stating a year for that figure.
Rank #2
- Filmed at the BBC Radio Theatre, Van Morrison `In Concert' includes a selection of tracks, old and new, from his iconic back catalog through to his 2016 album, Keep Me Singing
For the trip home, a soundtrack record could extend the experience for listeners who collect physical music; Video Games Live’s homepage lists an Earthworm Jim Anthology limited-edition double vinyl album. A record is an optional keepsake, not part of what makes the concert work.
