What Does Virtual CAN Mean? Interfaces, Virtual ECUs, and Network Models

Virtual CAN can mean a frame-exchange interface, an application-level channel, or an executable virtual ECU. Choose by the behavior you need to test.

“Virtual CAN” can mean anything from a software interface that exchanges CAN frames to a simulated ECU running inside a larger vehicle-network model. Those are different levels of simulation: Linux vcan and MathWorks virtual channels support application-level frame exchange, while a virtual ECU adds executable ECU software. None of these alone proves that a real CAN bus will behave correctly.

What is a virtual CAN platform?

A virtual CAN platform represents some part of a CAN-based system in software, without necessarily connecting a physical CAN controller or bus. The term is broad, so identify what is being modeled before choosing a tool:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Virtual interface or channel: software can send and receive CAN frames through a local or application-level interface.
  • Virtual ECU (vECU): an executable ECU software model participates in a network simulation.
  • Vehicle-network simulation: virtual buses and components can be combined, sometimes with connections to external devices or physical interfaces.

These models answer different questions. Frame exchange can test software that produces or consumes messages; a vECU can bring ECU software behavior into the simulation; neither automatically validates electrical behavior or all protocol behavior on a physical bus.

How do the main virtual CAN models differ?

Model What it represents Best fit Important limit
Linux SocketCAN vcan A virtual local CAN network interface Software frame exchange and automated test setups without a real CAN controller It is a virtual interface, not proof of physical bus behavior. Linux kernel documentation describes it as a virtual local CAN interface: SocketCAN documentation, v6.12.
MathWorks Vehicle Network Toolbox virtual channels Two application-level virtual CAN channels MATLAB and Simulink prototyping or simulation without CAN hardware Does not perform low-level arbitration, error-frame, or acknowledgment activity. Support and protocols vary by operating system; see the virtual channel documentation.
Vector vVIRTUALtarget with CANoe A virtual ECU integrated into a network simulation ECU software development, early integration, and testing Requires a compatible CANoe configuration and correct network and channel mapping. See vVIRTUALtarget and the CANoe vECU setup guidance.
CANdevStudio with vcan or hardware A CAN simulation tool that supports software interfaces and documented hardware backends Signal simulation and traffic inspection, with optional physical-interface support Backend and hardware compatibility depend on the selected release and setup. See the project documentation.
SODA.Sim CAN subsystem Virtual CAN networks within a vehicle simulation Vehicle simulation requiring virtual buses and possible links to SocketCAN or USB-CAN devices Available device components depend on operating system and interface. See the CAN subsystem documentation.

What can Linux vcan test?

Linux SocketCAN exposes CAN through a socket interface. Its vcan driver creates a virtual local CAN interface so applications can transmit and receive frames without a real CAN controller. The kernel documentation states, “vcan offers a virtual local CAN interface.” Linux kernel SocketCAN guide, v6.12.

This makes vcan useful when developing or testing software that exchanges CAN frames, especially in automation or environments where no controller is available. It does not make the computer behave electrically like a CAN transceiver or establish that the software will handle physical-bus timing, arbitration, errors, or acknowledgment correctly.

What do MathWorks virtual channels support?

Vehicle Network Toolbox provides two application-level virtual CAN channels for code prototyping and model simulation without CAN hardware. The documented protocol and operating-system support is specific: CAN, CAN FD, and J1939 are listed for Windows; CAN and CAN FD are listed for Linux. Check the current release documentation for the version and operating system you plan to use: MathWorks virtual channel support.

GRIDCONNECT CAN USB Adapter (GC-CAN-USB) - MPN: IPEH-002021
  • MPN: IPEH-002021
  • USB 1.1 , 2.0 , and 3.0 compatible
  • Supports baud rates up to 1M

When should you use a virtual ECU?

Use a vECU when the test requires ECU software itself to execute as a participant in the simulation, rather than only sending and receiving frames through a software channel. Vector describes vVIRTUALtarget as creating a virtual System Under Test for AUTOSAR Classic projects. Its product documentation lists Windows and Linux execution and I/O capabilities including CAN and CAN FD, as well as LIN, FlexRay, Ethernet, SPI, I2C, digital I/O, PWM, and ADC: Vector vVIRTUALtarget.

DSD TECH SH-C30L USB to CAN Bus Adapter Base on Canable Support SocketCAN Cangaroo(39CM/1.28FT)
  • Open Source Hardware, Actually Published: SH-C30L comes from the CANable open hardware project — and we publish our own design back. The full schematic and PCB layout for this exact board are on our GitHub (dsdtech-official), as editable design files rather than pictures, under the CERN-OHL-S-2.0 licence, together with the firmware images. Inspect it, modify it, build your own.
  • Direct USB-to-CAN Connectivity: Connect a computer straight to a CAN bus with no gateway in between. A 120 ohm termination switch is built in, so you can switch it off on a bus that already has two, and a programming switch drops the MCU into its USB bootloader for reflashing. Each CAN line runs through a resettable fuse and a TVS clamp, and the bus lands on a 3-pin 3.81 mm pluggable terminal.
  • Flexibility on Open Protocols: SH-C30L ships with candleLight firmware, which speaks gs_usb — a protocol whose driver is built into the Linux kernel, so it comes up as a standard SocketCAN interface with nothing to install. Use it with cangaroo, can-utils or python-can. You can also reflash it to slcan firmware from your browser at canable.io.
  • The Plug Is on a Lead, Not on the Board: A 15.4 in / 39 cm captive cable carries the USB-A plug, so the adapter no longer hangs off the port — it does not block the neighbouring socket, it keeps the strain off the connector, and the board itself is 19 mm shorter than our SH-C30A. Useful wherever the port is recessed or the wiring is tight.
  • New Firmware, Free on GitHub: SH-C30L shipped with the stock CANable candleLight build, which ignores the 24 MHz crystal fitted on the board. Our own build runs from that crystal and lights the TX and RX LEDs the stock build left dark. Units produced from September 2026 ship with it already installed; earlier units can be updated over USB — free, and entirely optional.

In CANoe, the built vECU is added as a node component, and its communication controllers are mapped to CANoe channels. The configured network names must match. Incorrect network names or channel mapping can prevent the virtual ECU from communicating on the intended network; follow the CANoe vECU setup guidance.

How do you choose the right workflow?

  1. Decide what behavior you need to test. For application frame exchange, consider a virtual interface or application-level channel. For ECU software execution, choose a vECU workflow. For real-bus behavior, plan a test involving appropriate physical hardware and a real network.
  2. Match the tool to your operating system and protocol. Confirm the selected release supports your OS and whether you need CAN, CAN FD, or another network type. Do not generalize protocol support from one platform to another.
  3. Check integration with your existing test environment. For CANoe and a vECU, verify the target network, configured network names, and channel mapping. For other tools, verify that their documented interface backend matches your setup.
  4. Separate virtual testing from physical validation. A successful exchange of frames in software does not validate arbitration, electrical behavior, real-bus timing, or error handling. Add physical-bus tests when those properties matter.
  5. Add hardware only if the workflow needs a real bus. Linux vcan and MathWorks virtual channels can be used without physical CAN hardware. To connect software to a vehicle or bench network, choose a compatible USB CAN adapter or other interface, and confirm operating-system drivers, CAN or CAN FD support, connector, and software compatibility.

Can you simulate CAN without hardware?

Yes, for software-level frame exchange and other supported virtual workflows. Linux vcan and MathWorks virtual channels are documented options that do not require a physical CAN controller. CANdevStudio also documents operation with vcan; its project documentation describes physical interface backends as additional options. CANdevStudio documentation.

SODA.Sim documents virtual CAN bus components that can connect to external interfaces such as SocketCAN or USB-PCAN and Kvaser hardware. Those connections are relevant when a simulation must exchange traffic with external devices or a physical network; available components depend on the operating system and named interface. What virtual CAN does not establish

A software interface can show that an application exchanges frames in its virtual environment. A vECU can add ECU software behavior to a network simulation. Neither result, by itself, establishes how a real network will behave electrically or under physical-bus conditions. In particular, MathWorks explicitly excludes arbitration, error frames, and acknowledgment from its virtual channels. For validation of those behaviors, use a suitable physical-bus test setup rather than treating a virtual channel as equivalent to a real CAN bus.
