Three degrees of freedom means a system can vary in three independent ways. For a point moving freely in three-dimensional space, those are its positions along the x, y and z axes. The phrase does not name the same motions in every context: it can refer to translation, rotation, or whatever three independent motions remain after constraints are applied.
What is a degree of freedom?
A degree of freedom is one independent coordinate or possible motion needed to describe a system’s configuration. The count is about how many independent values or movements are available—not how far or how fast something moves.

For a point moving freely in space, three coordinates specify its position: x, y and z. If a track confines it to a line, one coordinate is enough; if it is confined to a plane, two are enough. Carnegie Mellon University’s Introduction to Mechanisms, chapter 4, defines a rigid body’s degrees of freedom as the number of independent movements it has.

How do three degrees of freedom apply to a rigid body?
A free rigid body in three-dimensional space has six degrees of freedom: three translations that change its position, plus three rotations that change its orientation. So “three degrees of freedom” does not describe the total motion of a fully free rigid body unless the context specifies only its translations or only its rotations.

- The Leap Motion Controller senses your hands and fingers and follows their every move.
- It lets them move in all that wide-open space between you and your computer. So you can do almost anything without touching anything
- It’s the tiny device that just might change the way you use technology.
- It's a super-wide 150° field of view and a Z-axis for depth. That means you can move your hands in 3D, just like you do in the real world.
- The Leap Motion Controller can track your movements at a rate of over 200 frames per second.
- Three translations: movement along the x, y and z directions.
- Three rotations: turning about three independent axes.
If the body’s position is fixed at a point, translation is removed but it can still rotate about three independent axes. Constraints can reduce the count further: a planar rigid body has two translations and one rotation, while a hinge, or revolute joint, permits rotation about its axis. A prismatic joint permits translation along its guide.
What does 3DoF mean in virtual reality?
In extended reality (XR), 3DoF commonly means that a system tracks orientation—roll, pitch and yaw—but not translation through space. A user can turn their view, but the term alone does not imply that moving their head to a new position is tracked. IEEE Digital Reality describes this convention and contrasts it with 6DoF, which includes both orientation and position tracking: What Is 6DoF?

- Immersive Motion Control - When used with DJI Goggles 3, the drone's motion responds to your wrist movements. Combined with DJI RC Motion 3's robust anti-interference capability, you can achieve precise "point-to-fly" control.
- Quick Control with AR Cursor - When used with DJI Goggles 3, you can use the RC to control an AR cursor and navigate the menu on the goggles' screen. Enabling functions, and adjusting camera settings has never been more intuitive and efficient.
- Compact and Portable, Feature Rich - Light and portable, DJI RC Motion 3 features a streamlined design for a comfortable grip. A natural layout of various function buttons on its compact body enables you to perform takeoffs, stops, and mode switches with just a 'push' of your finger.
- Controlling the drone using DJI RC Motion 3 alone is not possible; it requires pairing with DJI Goggles 3.
- Compatibility - Compatible with DJI Neo, DJI Avata 2, DJI Mini 4 Pro, DJI Air 3, DJI Goggles 3. Please note that DJI RC Motion 3 does not work with DJI Goggles 2 and DJI Goggles Integra.
Three tracked positional directions without rotation would also be three degrees of freedom in the general mechanics sense. When reading a device or XR feature description, check which motions are tracked rather than assuming the number identifies them.

What does three degrees of freedom mean for molecules?
In molecular physics, three degrees of freedom often refers to the three dimensions of translational motion. A molecule may also have rotational and vibrational modes, but those modes do not all contribute equally at every temperature; thermal energy and quantum energy spacing matter. OpenStax explains the distinction in University Physics Volume 2, section 2.3.

For hydrogen, OpenStax gives illustrative temperature ranges: translation is the only active form below about 60 K; rotation begins contributing above that range and is fully active around room temperature through about 600 K, while vibration is not; vibration is fully active above about 3000 K. These are textbook examples for hydrogen, not universal thresholds for every molecule.

Identify the system and its constraints first. A point in space, a rigid object, a molecule and an XR headset can each use “three degrees of freedom” to describe different things. The reliable interpretation is always the three independent coordinates or motions specified by that context.
