What the Temple device measures
Temple calls its product a wearable worn at the temple, rather than a finger-worn ring. Its product page describes BrainFlow as “a proxy for Cerebral Blood Flow.” In practical terms, BrainFlow is an estimate related to blood flow in the brain; it should not be read as a direct measurement of brain activity, a diagnosis, or a standalone assessment of health.

Temple’s research summaries compare BrainFlow with reference measurements of brain blood volume and middle cerebral artery blood-flow velocity. These are related physiological measures, but they are not identical to one another or to a direct reading of cerebral blood flow.

Temple’s research page summarizes two comparisons. Both report correlations: statistics describing how measures moved together in a study. A correlation can support an association, but it does not by itself show how close an individual device reading is to a reference reading.

These summaries are from Temple’s science and research page. The reported correlations are not an “accuracy” percentage: r=0.91 does not mean a reading is 91% accurate. The summaries do not provide individual-level error bounds, a validated diagnostic threshold, or evidence that readings are interchangeable with the reference instruments.
What the results do not establish
- Clinical accuracy: The published summaries do not establish that BrainFlow can diagnose, monitor, or rule out a medical condition.
- Accuracy for every user or situation: The reported results come from particular study tasks and participant groups. They do not establish equivalent performance across broader populations or everyday conditions.
- Agreement in absolute values: Correlation shows that measures vary together; it does not show that the device and reference method produce the same number.
Temple’s Terms of Use state that the device and services “are not medical devices and are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any medical condition or illness.” The terms also say the data are not intended to match professional medical or scientific measurement devices, and advise users not to treat the service as medical advice or a substitute for professional judgment. Temple makes no representation or warranty regarding the validity, accuracy, correctness, or reliability of the data.

Availability and the “smart ring” name
The title phrase “smart ring” can be misleading: Temple’s official product material describes a wearable worn at the temple. Its early-access page said it would soon be available for pre-order, but that is a time-sensitive statement, not confirmation of current purchase or shipping availability. Check Temple’s early-access page for the latest status.
