On an Amazon Echo speaker, a brief purple light after you make a request usually means Do Not Disturb is on. Purple during initial setup points to a Wi-Fi issue. The light’s timing and pulse matter: Amazon’s indicator guide also distinguishes a slow purple pulse for Do Not Disturb from a quick purple pulse for an error.
What the purple light means
Amazon’s guidance gives the purple indicator different meanings depending on when it appears and how it behaves. Use the context rather than assuming every purple light signals the same problem.

| When you see purple | Meaning in Amazon’s guidance |
|---|---|
| Briefly after a request | Do Not Disturb is on. Amazon Echo speaker help |
| During initial setup | Wi-Fi issues. The indicator does not identify a particular router, password, or outage. Amazon Echo speaker help |
| Slowly pulsing | Do Not Disturb, according to Amazon’s indicator guidance. Amazon indicator guide |
| Quickly pulsing | An error indicator in Amazon’s developer guidance. Check the light’s context and whether the speaker is responding; the pulse alone does not identify the cause. Amazon indicator guide |
If the purple light appears after a request
A brief purple flash after you speak is associated with Do Not Disturb, not necessarily a fault. If you want Alexa to respond normally, check whether Do Not Disturb is enabled in the Alexa app or through the controls available for your Echo model, then turn it off if you no longer want it. Amazon’s help page describes the light as an indication of the setting; it does not mean the speaker needs replacing.

Amazon associates purple during initial Echo setup with Wi-Fi trouble. Check that your home network is available and that the device can connect during setup. The indicator does not, by itself, say whether the cause is the router, the password, or an internet outage.

- Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
- Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
- Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
If Alexa is also not responding
Purple alone is not enough to conclude that the speaker is broken or that troubleshooting is needed. If Alexa is unresponsive as well, Amazon recommends these checks:
- Use the power adapter supplied with the Echo.
- Confirm that your internet connection is active and the Echo is connected to Wi-Fi.
- Check that the microphone is not muted.
- Place the speaker away from walls, other speakers, and background noise.
- Try the Action button to see whether the device responds.
- Unplug the Echo, reconnect it, and allow it to restart.
See Amazon’s troubleshooting steps for an Echo that is unresponsive. Consider a reset only after basic power and connection checks; purple by itself is not a reason to reset the device.

Does the same meaning apply to every Alexa device?
No. This explanation is for Amazon Echo speakers. Other Alexa device families can use indicators differently: Amazon’s Echo Auto support page, for example, describes purple during initial setup as a possible setup failure. Newer Alexa+ device experiences also have separate indicator guidance, so don’t assume a speaker’s light meanings apply to every Alexa-enabled product.
