It can point to a license, network, account, sharing, subscription-entitlement, or—in some cases—parental-control issue. The icon alone does not tell you which one, and it does not mean the game was deleted or permanently lost.
Why is there a lock next to a PS5 game?
Sony says a padlock may mean there is a problem with the game’s license. Its guidance also identifies network or license issues as possible causes. In practical terms, the console may not be able to confirm that the signed-in account—or an account sharing access on that console—is entitled to launch the game.

Start by identifying how you got the game: you may have bought it on the current account, accessed it through PlayStation Plus, or be relying on another account’s sharing settings. A lock is an access warning, not a complete diagnosis.

- Check the purchasing account and transaction. Confirm that the PS5 is signed in to the account that bought the game. Check that account’s transaction history to make sure the purchase completed. Sony’s locked-games troubleshooting guide starts with these entitlement checks.
- If the game came from PlayStation Plus, check the entitlement. Make sure the relevant subscription is active and that the title remains available in the applicable PlayStation Plus selection. Subscription access is distinct from owning a purchased copy; a license restore does not make a title available if you no longer have the required subscription or the title is no longer in the selection.
- If someone else owns the game, check console sharing. The account that owns it must have Console Sharing and Offline Play enabled on this PS5 for other users of the console to play that account’s purchased and downloaded games. Details are in Sony’s Console Sharing and Offline Play guide.
- Consider parental controls if the lock covers the whole game image. Sony’s Singapore support page says a Family Manager can amend this kind of restriction. This is guidance from that regional page, not a universal rule for interpreting every padlock: PS5 game library help (Singapore).
- Check network status and system software. Check PlayStation Network status; if Sony reports a service issue, wait for it to clear and try again. Install the latest PS5 system software. Sony also includes enabling Console Sharing and Offline Play among its troubleshooting steps.
- Restore licenses. On the PS5, open Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licenses, then select the relevant licenses. You can also highlight the game on Home or in Game Library, press Options, and choose Restore License. Sony says this process does not affect your data; see its Restore Licenses instructions.
- If it remains locked, try Safe Mode recovery. Sony’s locked-games/download troubleshooting guidance includes Clear Cache and Rebuild Database in Safe Mode. If the problem continues, contact PlayStation Support and provide any error code and the steps that reproduce the issue.
How Console Sharing and Offline Play affects access
Sony says Console Sharing and Offline Play is automatically allowed on the first PS5 an account uses to sign in to PlayStation. To enable it on another PS5, sign in to the owning account and go to Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play. The setting can be enabled on only one PS5 at a time for an account.

When enabled, other users on that PS5 can play the account owner’s purchased and downloaded games and media, including offline, and can use some PlayStation Plus benefits. If the owner has enabled the setting on a different PS5, shared access on this console may not work as expected.
What license restoration can—and cannot—fix
Restoring licenses asks the console to re-check the licenses associated with the account. It can address a license-verification problem, and Sony says it does not affect saved or other game data. It does not substitute for having the correct purchasing account, an eligible subscription, a title still available through that subscription, or the required sharing setting.

Sony’s padlock guidance distinguishes its license-restoration fix from PlayStation Plus subscription expiration. Treat those as separate checks: restore licenses for a license issue, and verify subscription status and catalog availability when access came through Plus.

When to contact PlayStation Support
Contact PlayStation Support if the game is still locked after checking entitlement, sharing, network status and software, then restoring licenses and trying the recommended Safe Mode option. Include the exact error code, the account and access route involved (purchase, Plus, or sharing), and the steps that make the lock appear. These details help distinguish a license problem from an account, service, or console issue.
