The iPhone Camera Control button is a physical control for opening Camera, taking photos or videos, and adjusting camera settings. Click it to open Camera, click again to take a photo, or click and hold to record video. A light double press brings up a settings overlay you can navigate by sliding your finger across the control.
How to use Camera Control
Camera Control combines a Camera shortcut with capture and adjustment gestures. The camera settings it offers depend on the mode you are using.
Open Camera
Click Camera Control to open Camera. To change whether Camera opens with one click or two, go to Settings > Camera > Camera Control and choose the launch behavior.
Take a photo or record video
After Camera opens, click the control to take a photo. Click and hold to record video. If Camera opens already set to Video mode, click the control to start recording.

Choose and adjust a camera setting
Lightly press the control twice to show the settings available in the current camera mode. Slide your finger to the setting you want and lightly press to select it; slide again to adjust it. The selected setting is saved and appears the next time you open the overlay. Depending on the mode, settings can include exposure, depth, zoom, camera selection, Photographic Styles, and tone. To change which controls are available or their order, go to Settings > Camera > Camera Control > Customize.
Can Camera Control lock focus and exposure?
Yes. First enable Lock Focus and Exposure in Settings > Camera > Camera Control. Open Camera, then lightly press and hold Camera Control until AE/AF Lock appears. Keep touching the control to maintain the lock; releasing it ends the lock.

Can Camera Control activate Visual Intelligence?
On supported models, click and hold Camera Control to activate Visual Intelligence, point the camera at something, then use the options shown onscreen. Depending on the task, Visual Intelligence can surface business information, interact with text, identify plants or animals, or search for visually similar images. It is part of Apple Intelligence, whose availability depends on supported devices, languages, and regions; usage limits may apply. Apple also documents other ways to open Visual Intelligence on some iPhones, so Camera Control is not its only possible entry point. Do not assume every newer iPhone has the physical button. Apple’s overview, published April 1, 2026, identifies iPhone 16 and later models with Camera Control, while listing iPhone 17e, iPhone 16e, and iPhone 15 among models without it.
