What Does Task View Do in Windows?

Task View is Windows’ visual overview for open windows and virtual desktops. Open it with Windows key + Tab to switch windows, create desktops, or organize apps.

Task View gives you a visual overview of open windows and virtual desktops in Windows. Open it by pressing Windows key + Tab or selecting the Task View button on the taskbar. You can then choose a window, create or switch desktops, and organize apps into separate work areas.

What Task View is for

Task View is a workspace overview and navigation surface. It shows open windows alongside your virtual desktops; select a window thumbnail to bring that window to the foreground. You can also create desktops and move apps between them from Task View. Microsoft describes it as a broader overview than Alt+Tab. Microsoft’s multitasking guide explains the feature.

Virtual desktops let you group apps and tasks into separate work areas. For example, you might keep work apps on one desktop and personal apps on another, then switch between those spaces without treating each desktop as a separate computer. Microsoft’s multiple-desktop guide covers creating and managing them.

How to open and use Task View

  1. Open Task View: Press Windows key + Tab, or select the Task View button on the taskbar. If the button is not visible, you can still use the keyboard shortcut. Microsoft lists the shortcut in its Windows keyboard shortcuts guide.
  2. Return to an open window: Select its thumbnail in Task View to bring it forward.
  3. Create a desktop: Use the desktop controls in Task View, or press Windows key + Ctrl + D.
  4. Move between desktops: In Task View, select the desktop you want, or press Windows key + Ctrl + Left arrow or Windows key + Ctrl + Right arrow.
  5. Close the current desktop: Use its controls in Task View, or press Windows key + Ctrl + F4. This closes the desktop workspace; it is not the same action as individually closing each app assigned to it.

Task View, Alt+Tab, and Snap: what’s different?

Feature Main purpose When to use it
Task View Shows open windows and virtual desktops; supports desktop management and app organization. Use it when you want a broader view of your workspace or need to manage desktops.
Alt+Tab Switches among open apps or windows. Use it for direct switching without opening the full desktop overview.
Snap Resizes and positions windows in screen layouts. Use it to arrange windows on the current screen, rather than to manage desktops.

These are separate Windows multitasking tools: Task View manages the overview and desktops, Alt+Tab switches windows, and Snap arranges windows on screen. Microsoft’s multitasking guidance describes their distinct roles.

Does Task View show Timeline activity?

Windows 10’s Task View included Timeline, which provided a history of past activities. That Timeline interface was retired in Windows 11, so current Windows 11 Task View should not be described as an activity-history feature. Microsoft’s Timeline help page notes the retirement and points to recent files, OneDrive, or app-based history as alternatives.
