In Windows’ Win32 API, text searching can refer to a Find dialog that lets someone enter a search string and options. The dialog collects the request; the application that opened it must perform the actual search.
What does “searching for text” mean in this Windows API context?
The phrase refers to finding a user-specified string in a document or other content. In Win32, an application can use Microsoft’s FindTextW function to create a standard Find dialog. A user enters the text and selects available options, then asks the host application to find a match.

What does FindTextW do—and what does it not do?
It creates the Find dialog
FindTextW displays a system-defined, modeless Find dialog. Modeless means the dialog does not prevent the user from interacting with other windows in the application while it remains open.

FindTextW does not search a document. As Microsoft puts it, “The FindText function does not perform a search operation.” Instead, the dialog sends registered messages to the owner application’s window procedure, including when the user chooses Find Next or closes the dialog. The application must handle those messages and implement the search behavior.

What platform and components does the API require?
This is a Windows API reference, not a general definition of searching across every operating system or app. Microsoft lists Windows 2000 Professional and Windows 2000 Server desktop editions as the minimum supported client and server versions. Its requirements identify commdlg.h, Comdlg32.lib, and Comdlg32.dll. These are API reference requirements, not a recommendation to use an older Windows release.
