Red, green, blue (RGB) is an additive color model: it describes colors by combining different amounts of red, green, and blue light. It is widely used for electronic displays. An RGB triplet such as three channel values does not identify a color universally on its own; a color space such as sRGB gives those values their meaning.
What the three RGB channels represent
R, G and B stand for red, green and blue. Each channel specifies the amount of its corresponding light contribution. Picture a cube with one axis for each channel: a point in the cube represents one combination of channel values and therefore one color. RGB is the model for organizing those channels; a color space defines how the coordinates correspond to measurable colors.

How additive RGB mixing works
RGB describes emitted light, so the channels add together. In the idealized model, red and green light combine to make yellow, green and blue make cyan, and red and blue make magenta. Adding all three at full intensity produces white; with no light from any channel, the result is black. Apple’s archived technical documentation likewise describes RGB-based spaces as adding red, green and blue in varying intensities to create colors of the visible spectrum. Why screens use RGB
A display makes colors with light, which matches RGB’s additive model. The red, green and blue channels can be varied to produce many colors, making RGB-based color spaces useful for screens and other active-light devices. RGB is also used in computer graphics. The Office québécois de la langue française defines RGB as an additive model used with color monitors and other active-light media, as distinct from printed media; its terminology entry was last updated in 1997. What RGB numbers mean
RGB components are commonly written as values from 0 to 255 or as normalized values from 0 to 1. Web color notation can also use hexadecimal or functional forms. These are different ways to express channel coordinates, not universal color names. To interpret an RGB triplet, you also need its color space: sRGB and Adobe RGB, for example, use different coordinates and cover different ranges of colors. MDN, “RGB – Glossary”.

RGB versus paint and print
RGB applies to additive mixing of light, not to mixing paint. Pigments absorb portions of the light falling on them, so print and pigment workflows use subtractive color models, commonly CMY or CMYK in technical print contexts. The difference is the medium: RGB combines emitted light, while subtractive models describe reflected light after pigments absorb some of it.
