Point and click means directing an on-screen pointer at an item and activating it with a pointing-device action. You might click a link to open a page, select an icon, or choose a command. A mouse is one way to do it; a trackpad or touchscreen can work too.
What does point and click mean?
It describes a two-part interaction: point to a visible target on the screen, then activate that target. The target could be a link, icon, text field, menu item, map location, or another selectable object. The activation may select something, open it, or trigger an action.
For example, clicking a hyperlink can take you to another document. In an information system, selecting a place on a map might open a panel about it, while selecting a word might reveal its definition. The specific result depends on what the interface is designed to do. BCcampus explains basic pointing actions, and Alan Dix and co-authors describe point-and-click interactions in Human-Computer Interaction.
Do you need a mouse to point and click?
No. A mouse is a common pointing device, but it is not required. A laptop trackpad lets you move the pointer and tap or click to activate an item; on a touchscreen, you can point by touching the item directly. The phrase describes the interaction pattern, not one particular device. Dix and co-authors note that the point-and-click style is also used in touchscreen information systems.

What is a point-and-click interface?
The phrase can describe more than an individual action. A point-and-click interface is a broader style organized around visible items users can select to navigate or act. Those items might include highlighted words, map features, or icon buttons. It overlaps with graphical interface conventions, but the term also emphasizes selecting visible targets to move through information or perform actions.
Does a click always do the same thing?
No. The effect depends on the target and the application. A single click might place the text insertion point in a field, while a double-click might select a word; Microsoft gives those as examples in its Windows mouse guidance. That page discusses Windows 7 and cautions that its examples do not reflect current design guidance, so they should not be treated as universal rules. Follow the behavior indicated by the interface you are using.
