What Does “Not Playing” Mean on a College Football Availability Report?

On an official college football availability report, “Out” means unavailable for the upcoming game—but labels, schedules and disclosed details vary by conference.

On an official college football availability report, Out means the player is listed as unavailable for the upcoming game. “Not playing” is not a single, universal NCAA-wide report label: conferences use their own categories and update schedules, and a status by itself does not reveal why a player is unavailable.

What “Out” means

When an official report lists a player as Out, the player is designated unavailable for that upcoming game. That is an availability status, not an explanation of the player’s condition or circumstances.

The ACC says players may be listed because of injury, illness, eligibility, personal or family matters, or another reason; its public report gives the status but not the specific reason. The ACC’s reporting policy therefore does not let readers identify the cause from “Out” alone.

Why the label depends on the conference

The ACC and SEC describe their own reporting rules; these policies do not establish one binding vocabulary for every college football team. “Not playing” may be informal wording rather than the exact label on an official report. Check which conference issued the listing and read its stated category.

Conference Before game day Game day Football report timing described by the conference
ACC Available, Probable, Questionable, Out Available, Game Time Decision, Out Reports two days before conference games, an update the day before, and a game-day report two hours before the game. ACC policy
SEC Available, Probable, Questionable, Doubtful, Out Available, Game Time Decision, Out Reports three days before conference games, daily updates, and a final report 90 minutes before game time. SEC policy

These are the categories and schedules described in the conferences’ policies. They should not be assumed to apply to every other conference, team, or media outlet.

Why an earlier status may change

A designation describes availability at the time the report is issued. Because the ACC and SEC provide for later updates, an earlier status is not necessarily the final one. For a specific matchup, look for the newest official conference report and note when it was issued.

  1. Identify the conference responsible for the report.
  2. Check the report’s date and time, then look for a more recent update.
  3. Read the exact status category rather than treating “not playing” as a formal label everywhere.

Why conferences publish availability reports

The SEC says its policy is intended to reduce outside pressure for participation information while supporting student-athlete protection and competition integrity. SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey described it as a commitment to “provide enhanced transparency to support efforts to protect our student-athletes and the integrity of competition.” The SEC announcement sets out the policy and its stated purpose.
