MDA Space is a Canadian space-technology company that designs satellite systems, Earth-observation and geointelligence capabilities, space robotics, and mission-operations services. Its customers are governments, space agencies, satellite-network operators, and other commercial organizations—not consumers buying spacecraft from a retail catalog.
The company organizes this work into three business areas: Satellite Systems; Geointelligence; and Robotics & Space Operations. Examples include supplying systems for Telesat Lightspeed and Globalstar’s next-generation low-Earth-orbit constellation, developing the MDA CHORUS Earth-observation program, applying Canadarm-derived robotics through MDA SKYMAKER, and developing Canadarm3 for the Lunar Gateway.

The practical distinction is important: MDA usually supplies a system, subsystem, software, engineering service, or operations capability to a customer. A customer may own and operate the resulting constellation or facility. MDA’s involvement in a program therefore does not automatically mean MDA owns the satellites, sells the connectivity, or controls the mission.
The three business areas
Satellite Systems
Satellite Systems is the part of MDA that builds satellite platforms, payload-related systems, and other technologies used in satellite networks. The work can cover architecture, design, manufacturing, assembly, integration, testing, and delivery to the customer.
MDA’s FY2025 reporting names Telesat Lightspeed and Globalstar’s next-generation low-Earth-orbit (LEO) constellation as representative programs. In both cases, MDA is supplying systems for a customer’s network. The examples should not be read as evidence that MDA owns or operates either customer constellation.
For the fiscal year ended December 31, 2025, MDA reported Satellite Systems revenue of C$1,109.5 million, an 85.5% increase from 2024. MDA attributed the rise primarily to higher work volumes on Telesat Lightspeed and Globalstar’s next-generation LEO constellation. The figure is MDA Space’s FY2025 segment revenue, not the total value of those constellations or a measure of satellite sales to consumers.
Geointelligence
Geointelligence turns observations of Earth into information that organizations can use. The work can include Earth-observation spacecraft and constellations, sensing systems, data processing, analytics, and services that help a customer interpret conditions on the ground, at sea, or in the atmosphere.
MDA CHORUS is identified in company reporting as an Earth-observation constellation program associated with this business. Describing it accurately means saying that it supports observation of Earth and the production of useful information from those observations. It is not the same thing as a consumer mapping application, and the existence of a program does not establish that every resulting data product is publicly available.

The cited FY2025 material does not state a comparable Geointelligence segment-revenue figure in the information summarized here. That absence should not be treated as zero revenue; it means a directly comparable number is not established by the cited figures.
Robotics & Space Operations
This business combines robotic hardware and software with the engineering and operational services required to use it. MDA’s best-known heritage is Canadarm technology used in human spaceflight. Its MDA SKYMAKER line applies that heritage to a wider set of missions, including lunar rovers and landers, space stations, satellite servicing, and in-space assembly and manufacturing.
SKYMAKER is therefore a portfolio of mission-oriented robotics solutions and services, not a single consumer robot. Depending on the contract, MDA may be responsible for a robotic manipulator, control systems, integration, mission planning, training, or continuing operations support.
For the year ended December 31, 2025, MDA reported C$309.3 million in Robotics & Space Operations revenue, up 10.5% year over year. The company linked the increase primarily to higher work on Canadarm3.
How the major programs fit together
The following examples show the different customer outcomes MDA supports. They are not interchangeable products: one is a satellite-network supply program, another is Earth observation, and others are robotic development or operations contracts.

| Program or activity | Customer or mission context | What MDA supplies or does | Status and boundary |
|---|---|---|---|
| Telesat Lightspeed | Customer low-Earth-orbit communications constellation | Satellite systems and related engineering work | A customer program; MDA is a supplier, not the stated owner or operator of the network |
| Globalstar’s next-generation LEO constellation | Globalstar satellite-network expansion | Satellite systems work contributing to the constellation | A customer network; MDA’s reported role does not make it the network operator |
| MDA CHORUS | Earth-observation and geointelligence | Earth-observation constellation capabilities and associated information services | Use the program description for Earth observation; do not assume all data is publicly available |
| MDA SKYMAKER | Lunar, station, servicing, assembly, and manufacturing missions | Canadarm-derived robotic systems and mission services | A family of solutions and services rather than one retail product |
| Canadarm3 | Lunar Gateway, the planned space-station project near the Moon | Design and construction, including system assembly, integration, and testing | Under development; it is not a deployed robotic arm |
| ISS robotics operations | International Space Station operations | Ongoing robotics operations support under a Canadian Space Agency contract extension | C$250 million extension covering 2025–2030, as reported by MDA; this is an operations-service role, not construction of a new station |
What is Canadarm3?
Canadarm3 is MDA’s robotic-arm development for the Lunar Gateway effort. The Gateway is planned as a platform for missions around the Moon, so Canadarm3 is being designed for a different operating environment from the Canadarm systems associated with the International Space Station.

MDA’s FY2025 filing describes design and construction work, including assembly, integration, and testing. Those terms describe a program still moving through development and qualification. Canadarm3 should therefore be described as under development, not as a robot already installed and performing Gateway missions.
The status also explains why Robotics & Space Operations revenue rose in FY2025: MDA said the increase was primarily related to higher work on Canadarm3. Revenue recognition during development does not mean that the final arm has been delivered or deployed.
Canadarm3 should not be confused with MDA’s separate ISS role. MDA reported a C$250 million Canadian Space Agency contract extension for ISS robotics operations from 2025 through 2030. That extension pays for continued support of robotics already used in ISS operations; it is distinct from building Canadarm3 for the Lunar Gateway.
What does MDA provide to a satellite customer?
A satellite operator normally starts with a mission requirement: coverage area, communications capacity, imaging performance, lifetime, launch constraints, or a required orbit. A systems contractor such as MDA can then translate that requirement into hardware, software, testing, and support.
- Mission and system definition: engineers establish the orbit, payload interfaces, power, thermal, communications, pointing, reliability, and ground-system requirements.
- Design: teams create the spacecraft or network architecture and select or develop the subsystems needed to meet those requirements.
- Manufacturing and assembly: flight hardware is produced, integrated, and documented under the customer’s contract and applicable space-quality controls.
- Verification and testing: the assembled system is tested for vibration, thermal-vacuum conditions, electromagnetic compatibility, software behavior, and end-to-end mission performance.
- Delivery and support: the customer receives the spacecraft or system, together with documentation, training, integration assistance, and—when contracted—continuing engineering or operations support.
This lifecycle is why a company’s reported revenue can increase before a launch. Engineering milestones, hardware deliveries, integration, and testing can each be billable contract work. A revenue figure is not a launch count and does not by itself show that a constellation is complete.
How geointelligence turns observations into information
Earth observation begins with sensors collecting measurements of the planet. The useful result is rarely the raw image alone. Customers may need corrected data, repeated observations, change detection, classification, or analysis tied to a specific decision.

- Collection: satellites acquire optical, radar, or other sensor measurements as they pass over an area.
- Processing: raw measurements are calibrated, time-stamped, geolocated, and prepared for analysis.
- Interpretation: algorithms and human analysts identify features, changes, or patterns relevant to the customer’s mission.
- Delivery: results can be supplied through customer systems, reports, data products, or operational interfaces, depending on the contract.
MDA CHORUS belongs in this Earth-observation context. Calling it a constellation program communicates the space segment; it does not establish a particular public pricing model, mobile app, or unrestricted data-access policy.

How MDA’s robotics work differs from a terrestrial robot
Space robotics must operate where repair is difficult, communication can be delayed, lighting can change dramatically, and every kilogram launched is expensive. A robotic arm or servicing system must therefore be designed as part of a larger mission, with extensive fault management and ground procedures.
For a station or Gateway, the robot may move equipment, inspect structures, or assist visiting vehicles. For lunar missions, a robotic system may deploy instruments or manipulate hardware on the surface. For satellite servicing and in-space assembly, it may rendezvous with another spacecraft or handle components that were not assembled on Earth.
Those applications explain the breadth of SKYMAKER. The common element is not a consumer-style product specification; it is the ability to provide controlled robotic motion, sensing, software, mission planning, and operations in a space environment.
FY2025 figures and what they actually measure
MDA’s cited results announcement was published March 4, 2026, and the financial year covered ended December 31, 2025. Keeping the date attached to each number prevents a current-looking figure from being mistaken for a forecast or a lifetime total.

What MDA Space does not do
- It is not primarily a consumer spacecraft retailer. The described work is institutional and commercial mission infrastructure, engineering, and operations.
- It does not automatically own customer constellations. Supplying systems for Telesat Lightspeed or Globalstar’s next-generation LEO constellation is different from owning or operating those networks.
- CHORUS is not established here as a public mapping app. It is an Earth-observation constellation program; access to particular data products depends on the relevant service and customer arrangements.
- Canadarm3 is not yet deployed. The documented status is design and construction for the Lunar Gateway, including assembly, integration, and testing.
- The ISS extension is not a new space station. It is a Canadian Space Agency contract extension for robotics operations support from 2025 through 2030.
How to evaluate a claim about MDA’s role
Space programs often involve an agency, a prime contractor, launch providers, component suppliers, and an eventual operator. To understand what MDA is doing in any announcement, separate four questions:
- Who is the customer? Identify the agency, satellite operator, or commercial mission owner that commissioned the work.
- What is MDA delivering? It may be a complete satellite system, a robotic subsystem, data and analytics, integration engineering, or operations support.
- What is the program status? “Under development,” “in testing,” “delivered,” “launched,” and “operational” describe different milestones.
- What does the number represent? Check whether it is segment revenue, year-over-year growth, a multiyear contract value, or a company-wide historical claim.
Applying those questions avoids the most common errors: treating a supplier as the network owner, treating a development contract as a deployed capability, or comparing a fiscal-year revenue number with a multiyear program budget.
Why the three businesses belong together
Satellites, Earth-observation information, and robotics may look like separate industries, but they share a demanding customer environment. Each requires long development cycles, specialized testing, dependable software, and the ability to operate hardware far from Earth.

A lunar or station customer needs robotic hardware that can be commanded safely for years. Bottom line
MDA Space builds and supports the infrastructure behind institutional and commercial space missions. Satellite Systems supplies spacecraft and network technology; Geointelligence supports Earth observation and the conversion of observations into usable information; and Robotics & Space Operations provides Canadarm-derived robotic systems plus mission support. Telesat Lightspeed, Globalstar’s next-generation LEO constellation, MDA CHORUS, SKYMAKER, Canadarm3, and ISS robotics operations illustrate those roles—but each has its own customer, deliverable, and development or operating status.
