If your computer lists two display adapters, it recognizes two graphics devices. On many laptops, these are integrated graphics and a separate, more powerful GPU working in a hybrid-graphics setup. Their presence does not mean you have two monitors connected, that both GPUs are rendering at once, or that anything is wrong.
What are the two display adapters?
A display adapter is a graphics device that helps produce the image shown on a screen. In a common laptop configuration, one adapter is integrated graphics built into the processor, while the other is a discrete graphics processing unit (GPU). The computer may use the integrated device for ordinary tasks and the discrete GPU for work that benefits from more graphics performance.

NVIDIA’s Optimus whitepaper describes one example of this design: on Optimus systems, Windows can show both Intel and NVIDIA adapters in Device Manager even when Optimus has turned off the NVIDIA GPU. Does two adapters mean two monitors?
No. The number of graphics devices and the number of connected screens are different things. A computer can list two adapters while displaying an image on just its built-in screen. Conversely, whether a particular adapter controls an external monitor depends on the computer’s hardware and how its display outputs are wired.

Which adapter controls a screen or port?
The listing alone does not reveal which graphics device drives the built-in display or a particular connector. That routing can vary by computer model. For example, Lenovo’s support documentation for the ThinkPad Edge E431/E531 describes some displays as assigned to a specific adapter; it applies to those models and their documented configuration, not to laptops generally. Do two entries mean something is wrong?
Not by themselves. A pair of adapters can be an expected part of a hybrid-graphics design. The listing does not show whether a driver is healthy, which GPU a particular app used, or whether a display connection is functioning correctly.

Look for a specific symptom or error before troubleshooting: for example, a screen that stays blank, an external display that is not detected, or an error reported for an adapter in Device Manager. If there is a problem, use the computer manufacturer’s instructions for your exact model. Do not disable an adapter solely because two are listed; the entries alone do not identify which one is needed for a screen or application.
How is this different from a primary or secondary display adapter?
“Primary” and “secondary” have also been used to describe adapter roles in multi-monitor configurations. In short, two listed adapters usually means two recognized graphics devices—not two screens. To find out what each device does on your computer, you need its model and, if troubleshooting, the specific display symptom or error.
