It is an ethical lens rather than a formal technical standard: ask who benefits, who bears risks, what happens when a system fails or is misused, which harms are reversible, and what dependencies or capabilities are being passed on.
The idea combines long-term thinking and intergenerational justice with established AI guidance on human rights, safety, accountability, inclusion, transparency and environmental stewardship. It does not require predicting the future perfectly or sacrificing every present need for a distant one. It requires deliberate foresight, precaution under uncertainty and institutions that let affected people—including people not yet born—remain represented in decisions.

“Good AI ancestor” is an ethical lens, not an official AI label
There is no universally accepted definition of a good AI ancestor, and no certification that proves an AI system has achieved intergenerational fairness. The phrase applies the broader idea of being a good ancestor to artificial intelligence: present choices create an inheritance of benefits, risks, rules, knowledge, infrastructure and environmental conditions.

That inheritance can be positive. Carefully governed AI might improve medical research, accessibility, public services or scientific understanding. It can also leave negative legacies: automated discrimination, unsafe systems, concentrated power, surveillance infrastructure, fragile dependencies, depleted resources or institutions that future citizens cannot effectively challenge.

Six long-term-thinking habits behind the idea
In a 2022 review, Hector Dlamini summarizes six elements from Roman Krznaric’s book The Good Ancestor: How to Think Long Term in a Short-Term World. The framework was not written as an AI standard, but it offers a vocabulary for examining AI decisions.
Deep-time humility
AI projects often use short planning cycles: a product launch, a funding round or a policy term. Deep-time humility widens the frame. Digital systems can influence behavior, labor markets, public knowledge and political institutions for decades, even when their creators expect a limited pilot.
Recommended Free Tools
Humility means recognizing that future people may judge today’s assumptions differently and that some effects will emerge only after a system is embedded. Design records, model documentation and preserved evidence can help future stewards understand why a decision was made and what its creators could not know at the time.
Legacy mindset
A legacy mindset asks what remains after the original team, company or administration is gone. For AI, the legacy may include training data practices, open or closed interfaces, procurement rules, evaluation methods, public expectations and technical skills.
Ask whether the system leaves maintainable knowledge and accountable institutions, or merely an opaque dependency that a future operator cannot repair. A model that performs well today but cannot be audited, updated or safely retired may be a poor inheritance.

Intergenerational justice
Intergenerational justice considers how benefits and burdens are distributed between people alive now and people who will live later. It also requires attention to unequal effects within the present generation. A system should not be defended as “good for the future” while imposing severe, unchallengeable harm on current communities.
For an AI deployment, examine who receives convenience, income or improved services, who supplies data and labor, who faces errors or surveillance, and whether later generations inherit the cost of correcting the system.
Cathedral thinking
Cathedral thinking means working toward objectives that outlast an individual career or institution. The metaphor is useful for AI infrastructure such as safety research, public-interest datasets, digital identity systems or standards that require patient maintenance.
Long projects still need near-term milestones. Cathedral thinking is not permission to postpone accountability; it is a reason to build governance, funding and succession plans that survive changes in leadership.
Holistic forecasting
Holistic forecasting looks beyond a model’s direct output. An AI system can alter incentives, organizational power, energy use, employment, public trust and the behavior of other systems. Consider intended benefits, plausible misuse, second-order effects and interactions with law and social norms.

Transcendent goal
A transcendent goal is a purpose larger than short-term performance or market share. In AI, that might be preserving human agency, expanding access to essential services, supporting democratic participation or protecting ecological systems.
The goal must be stated precisely enough to guide trade-offs. “Innovation” alone cannot tell a team whether to accept a privacy loss, an environmental cost or a higher failure rate.
How established AI principles support future-oriented decisions
The United Nations: foresight, impact assessment and precaution
The United Nations System Common Principles use the heading “Think, plan and act with future generations in mind.” Their approach calls for foresight, assessment of future impacts, a precautionary approach when uncertainty persists and mechanisms that represent future generations’ interests in decisions made today.

UNESCO: present and future generations, people and planet
UNESCO’s Recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence, adopted in 2021, includes an objective to “safeguard the interests of present and future generations.” It also addresses preservation of the environment, biodiversity and ecosystems.
This broadens an AI review beyond individual accuracy. A system can be accurate yet damaging if it normalizes rights violations, consumes resources without justification or weakens ecological resilience. Environmental assessment should consider the full lifecycle where information is available: data preparation, training, deployment, updates and retirement.

OECD: a practical governance vocabulary
The OECD says its AI Principles promote AI “that is innovative and trustworthy and that respects human rights and democratic values.” Adopted in 2019 and updated in 2024, the principles organize practical questions around:
- inclusive growth, sustainable development and well-being;
- human rights, democratic values and fairness;
- transparency and explainability;
- robustness, security and safety; and
- accountability.
These principles do not prove that a particular system is fair to future generations. They provide governance duties that make long-term stewardship more credible: people need to know when AI is used, operators need to manage foreseeable failures, and someone must remain answerable for outcomes.
A practical method for acting like a good AI ancestor
The following process turns the ethical lens into a repeatable review. It is a set of questions derived from the principles above, not a validated scoring system.
- Define the decision and its time horizon. Describe the exact system, users, affected non-users, proposed duration and likely paths to expansion. Record what would happen if the pilot became permanent.
- Map benefits and burdens. Identify who gains speed, access, safety or revenue; who supplies data or labor; who may receive incorrect decisions; and which communities have limited ability to opt out or appeal.
- Test rights and agency. Check privacy, freedom of expression, equality, due process and accessibility. Explain whether a person can understand an important decision, obtain human review and challenge an error.
- Model misuse and failure. Consider ordinary mistakes, malicious use, data drift, cyberattack, vendor failure and institutional misuse. Include scenarios in which the system is deployed in a different context from the one originally approved.
- Identify irreversible effects. Permanent records, ecological damage, loss of specialist skills, entrenched discrimination and dependence on a single provider are harder to undo than a reversible interface change. Apply stronger controls before crossing those thresholds.
- Assess environmental and social dependencies. Document material energy, water, hardware, labor and data requirements where they can be established. Consider whether the system displaces a capability that future operators will need.
- Build representation into governance. Consult affected communities, domain experts, workers and civil-society groups. Create a way to represent long-term interests when those affected cannot yet participate directly.
- Set conditions for deployment. Define monitoring, incident reporting, audit access, human-override rules, update procedures and a shutdown or retirement plan. Assign named responsibility rather than treating accountability as an abstract principle.
- Reassess on a schedule and after triggers. Revisit assumptions after serious incidents, major model updates, new evidence, regulatory changes or expansion into a new population. Long-term thinking requires revision, not a one-time approval.
Decision axes for comparing AI choices
When choosing between models, vendors, deployments or governance approaches, compare the options on the same dimensions. A cheaper or more accurate option is not automatically the better inheritance.
| Decision axis | Questions to ask | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|---|
| Benefits and burdens | Who gains value, and who pays in money, time, privacy, labor or risk? | Distributional analysis and affected-group feedback |
| Rights and fairness | Could the system restrict rights or produce unequal outcomes? Are reasonable accommodations available? | Impact assessments, subgroup testing and appeal outcomes |
| Safety and reversibility | What happens when the system fails, and can the decision or deployment be undone? | Failure scenarios, controls, rollback and retirement plans |
| Transparency and contestability | Do people know AI is involved, understand the relevant reasons and have a route to challenge a result? | Notices, explanations, logs and response-time records |
| Environmental effects | What resources and ecosystems are affected across the system’s lifecycle? | Lifecycle estimates, mitigation commitments and monitoring |
| Long-term preparedness | Will future operators have the skills, documentation and authority to maintain or replace it? | Documentation, training, succession and interoperability plans |
| Accountability | Who can investigate, remedy harm and change or stop the system? | Named owners, audit rights, incident processes and public reporting |
What the lens looks like in real decisions
Automated eligibility or benefits decisions
A short-term view asks whether the model predicts eligibility accurately. A good-ancestor review also asks whether applicants receive understandable notice, whether errors can be corrected before essential support is lost, whether historical data reproduces exclusion and whether the agency will retain enough expertise to replace the model later.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsAI in education
An educational system may personalize lessons, but it can also create lasting records about children or narrow what teachers are able to do. Reviewers should examine consent, retention, accessibility, effects on teacher expertise, the child’s ability to contest a label and whether future adults can escape an early automated judgment.

High-stakes workplace monitoring
Productivity scoring can shift power toward an employer while imposing opaque surveillance on workers. A future-oriented decision would test whether measurements encourage unsafe behavior, whether workers can inspect and challenge records, and whether the organization has a credible limit on data collection rather than allowing monitoring to expand indefinitely.
Environmental and scientific applications
AI may help model climate or biodiversity risks, yet its own infrastructure has resource demands. The relevant comparison is not simply model accuracy. It includes whether the system improves decisions enough to justify those demands, whether findings remain accessible and reproducible, and whether ecological safeguards survive changes in funding or ownership.
Long horizons do not remove present obligations
Intergenerational fairness is not an instruction to maximize a distant future at any cost. The European Commission’s intergenerational fairness work emphasizes the needs of present and future generations together, along with collaboration, care, accountability and citizen engagement. Its 2025 scoping work convened hundreds of participants through workshops, dialogues and online consultations.
This matters because future preferences cannot be known with precision, while present harms are often visible. A policy that protects hypothetical future benefits by denying current people basic rights is not automatically responsible. Conversely, urgent present benefits should not excuse permanent risks that future people will have no realistic power to reverse.
The practical response is to make trade-offs explicit, protect non-negotiable rights, prefer reversible experiments where possible and create review points at which assumptions can be challenged. Foresight is valuable precisely because it exposes uncertainty; it should not be presented as certainty.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Turning the phrase into a score. No universal metric establishes that an AI system is good for future generations. A checklist can structure judgment but cannot replace it.
- Confusing longevity with virtue. A system that lasts for decades is not beneficial if it preserves discrimination, unsafe dependencies or unaccountable power.
- Using “future generations” to evade accountability. Long-term benefits do not excuse avoidable present harm or remove the duty to provide remedy.
- Assuming technical fixes solve institutional problems. Better accuracy cannot by itself resolve who has authority, who can appeal or who pays for failure.
- Ignoring retirement. Every deployment should have conditions for modification, replacement and shutdown. An AI system becomes part of the inheritance when nobody can realistically turn it off.
- Leaving affected people out. Consultation is not decorative. People who live with a system’s consequences often identify risks that designers and executives miss.
A concise checklist for teams and decision-makers
- Have we described the people affected now and the institutions affected later?
- Have we assessed benefits, burdens, rights, safety, transparency, environmental effects and accountability?
- What is uncertain, and what precaution is justified while uncertainty remains?
- Which harms would be severe or irreversible?
- Can a person understand, challenge and obtain remedy for an important decision?
- Who is responsible for monitoring, updating, auditing and shutting down the system?
- What documentation, skills and resources will future operators inherit?
- When will the decision be revisited, and what event would trigger an earlier review?
To be a good AI ancestor is to treat every deployment as a transfer of power and risk across time. The standard is not foresight without error. It is disciplined stewardship: preserve human rights and agency, prepare for failure, include people who bear the consequences, protect the living world and leave future generations more choices—not fewer—than the decision requires.
