There is no single monthly price for a nonstop YouTube stream of prerecorded videos. You may spend little beyond electricity and internet if you use a computer you already own, or pay for a remote host or a managed service. A full cloud broadcast system can cost far more because it separately bills encoding, packaging and delivery to viewers. Music rights, monitoring and archive backups may add costs too.
The key distinction is whether you only need to send a feed to YouTube or are paying a cloud provider to encode and deliver video to an audience. The latter is not the same as a simple YouTube encoder connection.

What determines the cost?
Build the estimate from the actual components in your setup rather than treating “24/7 streaming” as one product with one standard price.
| Cost area | What to include | What changes the bill |
|---|---|---|
| Encoder host | A computer running encoder software, a dedicated computer, a VPS, or a managed looping service. | Whether you already own suitable hardware; hosting plan and any included bandwidth. Current comparable VPS and managed prerecorded-loop prices were not established in the sources cited here. |
| Power and internet | Electricity and the internet connection used by an on-premises computer. | Your local electricity rate, connection plan and data limits. YouTube’s encoder instructions do not prescribe a particular computer or require you to buy one. |
| Cloud broadcast services | Potentially separate charges for encoding, packaging/origination and delivery to viewers. | Region, bitrate, viewer-hours, cache behavior, selected services and how long channels run. |
| Rights and operations | Music and other content rights, monitoring, recovery, backup recording and time spent maintaining the stream. | Your content and licensing arrangements, how much resilience you need, and who handles failures. No universal cost is established for these categories. |
Existing computer or dedicated computer
If you already have a computer that can run your encoder, there may be no hardware purchase. A separate computer is an optional way to avoid tying up your everyday machine; YouTube’s setup instructions explain how to connect an encoder, but do not require a new device. Whichever computer you use, factor in its power use, internet plan and the work needed to keep it running and recover from interruptions.

VPS or managed looping service
A remote host can keep the encoder away from your home computer, while a managed looping service may handle more of the workflow. Compare the actual plan terms: recurring fee, bandwidth allowance, supported video settings, recovery responsibility and archive options. The sources cited here do not establish a current like-for-like price, bandwidth allowance or uptime promise for these services, so a precise universal VPS-versus-managed-service comparison would be misleading.
What the AWS example does—and does not—tell you
AWS’s Live Streaming on AWS planning guide currently displays a modeled monthly total of $3,838.69 for approximately 100 viewers watching 200 hours at 1080p in a particular US East (N. Virginia) architecture: $904.69 for encoding and packaging, plus $2,934 for distribution. This is a MediaLive, MediaPackage and CloudFront scenario—not YouTube’s fee for receiving a creator’s stream, and not a quote for a minimal encoder host or prerecorded-file loop. AWS says its examples use straightforward assumptions and may be higher than actual costs; the estimate assumes viewers consume the highest bitrate. See AWS’s planning guide.
The same guide displays an estimate of about $2.50 for encoding and packaging plus $67.24 for distribution—$69.74 total—for a one-hour SD-540p event with approximately 1,000 viewers. The contrast illustrates how viewer delivery can dominate the modeled bill. These figures depend on the architecture and assumptions, including bitrate, audience, cache behavior and region; the guide does not state a publication year for them, so treat them as the figures displayed on the page, not a timeless industry benchmark.

AWS’s pricing page says MediaLive charges according to inputs, outputs and add-ons, and channels incur charges while running. It also describes reserved pricing for channels running more than 180 hours per month. Check the chosen region and configuration in the AWS MediaLive pricing details and pricing calculator before estimating your own bill. Do not transfer the planning-guide total directly to a different architecture.
How to estimate your own monthly cost
- Choose where the encoder runs. Record whether you will use an existing computer, buy a dedicated one, rent a VPS or use a managed looping service. Include only costs that apply to that option.
- Measure your operating costs. For an on-premises computer, use your own electricity rate and estimate its actual power draw and operating hours. Check your internet plan’s data terms. The official sources here do not provide universal electricity or broadband prices.
- For cloud services, price the complete architecture. Identify each billable service, the region, channel runtime, input and output configuration, bitrate, expected viewer-hours and delivery assumptions. In a managed broadcast stack, do not count encoding alone if packaging or viewer delivery is also required.
- Add continuity and archive needs. Decide who notices and restarts a failed stream, whether a backup recording is needed, and how you will preserve replays. Include any equipment or labor this requires.
- Separate operating cost from monetization. Do not subtract hoped-for ad revenue from the estimate. Eligibility and ad delivery are uncertain, and monetization policies apply to live streams.
- Compare options on equal terms. Use the same resolution, bitrate, streaming hours, viewer assumptions, geography and recovery target. A fixed-price host and a usage-billed broadcast stack are not comparable if one includes viewer delivery and the other does not.
Can prerecorded files run as a nonstop YouTube Live stream?
YouTube’s encoder workflow is to create a stream, copy its stream URL and stream key into the encoder, then send the feed. That describes how to connect an encoder; it does not require a new computer. Keep the stream key private, because anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to your channel.
Plan for the archive limit
YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; if a stream exceeds 12 hours, it “may not be captured at all.” If you need a replay, plan around that limit rather than assuming a single continuous 24/7 broadcast will produce a complete archive. Consider recording a local backup if keeping the stream matters. YouTube Help: archive live streams.

Clear rights before going live
YouTube’s livestream terms require the provider to represent that they have necessary rights for the live content, including music licensing rights. Owning an audio file or having a subscription to a listening service does not by itself establish that you have permission to rebroadcast it. Read YouTube’s terms.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match may trigger a placeholder image, warning, interruption or termination. Even if you have licensed material, the rights owner may need to add your channel to a Content ID allowlist to prevent an interruption. Resolve that with the rights owner before relying on the stream to stay live. YouTube Help: live stream copyright issues.
Do not assume looping content will be monetized
YouTube’s monetization policies apply to live streams. Monetized content should be original and authentic; repetitive or mass-produced material may be ineligible. On July 15, 2025, YouTube clarified its repetitious-content policy and renamed it the inauthentic-content policy. A loop of prerecorded files is not automatically eligible: YouTube reviews the channel and content against its policies. YouTube channel monetization policies.

Eligible channels may monetize live streams through ads and, where available, Super Chat, Super Stickers and memberships. YouTube does not guarantee that ad slots will serve ads, so revenue is uncertain and should not be treated as a dependable offset to operating costs. YouTube Help: monetize live streams.
