There is no single reliable price for developing, buying, and maintaining a humanoid robot. Published figures refer to different things: prototype estimates, a parts bill, modeled acquisition and operating costs, or a company’s revenue assumptions. None is a universal all-in price. For a real deployment, budget development separately from the robot itself, then include integration, software, safety validation, supervision, maintenance, spares, energy, and downtime.
What do published humanoid robot cost figures actually measure?
The figures below are useful reference points, but they are not directly interchangeable. A bill of materials (BOM) covers parts; acquisition is a modeled or quoted purchase cost; operating and maintenance (O&M) is a recurring estimate; and revenue assumptions describe a vendor’s business model, not a buyer’s total cost.

| Published figure | What it measures | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| $150,000–$500,000 per unit | Current humanoid prototype cost estimate | McKinsey & Company attributes this analytical range to overengineered subsystems and immature supply chains. The publication date is not displayed on the accessed page; it is not a vendor quote. |
| About $20,000–$50,000 per unit | Target product-cost range | McKinsey describes this as the range costs must reach to compete with human labor in mainstream sectors. It is a viability target, not a current general purchase price. |
| About $125,000 per unit | Digit v4 BOM | Agility Robotics’ 2026 SEC-filed company presentation; this is the company’s parts-cost figure, not a selling price or deployed cost. |
| About $30,000 per unit | Future Digit BOM goal | Agility Robotics’ 2026 SEC-filed company presentation; a stated future goal, not an achieved current cost. |
| About €55,000 per unit | Acquisition cost in an economic scenario | Porsche Consulting’s 2026 estimate, not a vendor-neutral rate card or a market-wide price. |
| About €5,800 per unit per year | Operating and maintenance in the same scenario | Porsche Consulting’s 2026 estimate; it should not be generalized across robots or deployments. |
| About 1.5–2 years | Estimated payback in the Porsche Consulting scenario | The estimate assumes 100% performance capacity; actual returns depend on task fit, utilization, labor costs, supervision, safety work, and downtime. |
| About $500,000 under RaaS; about $400,000 under ownership over five years | Agility revenue assumptions | Agility Robotics’ 2026 SEC-filed presentation models revenue over a five-year useful life. These are company revenue estimates, not customer total cost of ownership. |
Porsche Consulting also estimates potential MedTech production savings of about €14.3 billion by 2030. That is a sector-wide potential savings estimate, not realized savings or a forecast for an individual buyer.

What makes a humanoid robot expensive to build?
Actuation is the largest identified cost block
McKinsey’s generalized BOM analysis assigns about 40–60% of cost to actuation, including motors, gearboxes, joint assemblies, sensors, and drivers. Its other estimated shares are about 10–20% for perception and compute, 10–15% for mechanical structure, 5–10% for power, and 5–10% for wiring, connectors, and controls. These are broad component shares, not the audited BOM of every robot; the ranges should not be added as if they described one particular machine.

Low volumes and job complexity add cost
Early humanoids may carry sensors and compute beyond what a particular task needs. Bespoke parts produced in small quantities, labor-intensive wiring, and integration work can also raise cost. McKinsey identifies task-scoped designs, modular joints, fewer parts, simpler harnesses, standardized platforms, serviceability, and appropriately sized perception and compute as potential cost-reduction levers. They are not guaranteed savings for a specific product.
How much does it cost to develop the robot, not just build a unit?
The public figures above do not establish a consistent total research-and-development budget for a humanoid platform. A prototype estimate or per-unit BOM is not the cost of creating the program. Development budgets need to account separately for software and hardware engineering, prototypes, testing, tooling, factory setup, and the work required to adapt a platform to a customer’s site and task.

For a deployment, build the budget around the work and services the contract actually requires:
- Platform acquisition or subscription, with the price basis and ownership terms identified.
- Site integration, commissioning, task-specific engineering, and safety validation.
- Software, support, and any recurring license or service fees.
- Maintenance labor, spare parts, battery replacement assumptions, and repair response.
- Electricity, human supervision, training, and operational downtime.
How should buyers compare maintenance and operating costs?
The Porsche Consulting scenario is the clearest public annual O&M estimate in the sources covered here, but it does not provide a comparable cross-vendor service schedule or an itemized split of parts, labor, energy, and downtime. Ask each supplier to specify what is included, rather than comparing a headline annual number with an incomplete service offer.

For an ROI estimate, disclose labor costs, shifts, utilization, supervision, and downtime assumptions.
Is renting a humanoid robot cheaper than buying one?
Not necessarily. Robotics-as-a-Service (RaaS) can reduce upfront capital needs by packaging robot access and service over time, but whether it costs less depends on the contract and usage. Agility Robotics’ 2026 SEC-filed presentation says most of its secured Digit v5 orders are under RaaS and describes ownership as an upfront sale plus ongoing software and service revenue. Those are company descriptions and revenue economics, not an independent customer price comparison.

What do current deployments and future plans show?
Porsche Consulting reports that Figure F.02 was used at BMW’s Spartanburg plant for eleven months, completing more than 1,250 operating hours and moving over 90,000 car-body components. It also reports Digit moving more than 100,000 containers at a GXO logistics center. These examples show reported use in specific settings; they are not independent comparisons of lifecycle cost or proof that the same results will transfer to another facility.

The same Porsche Consulting analysis says early use is concentrated in repetitive, physically demanding work in structured environments, and that humanoids have not reached industrial maturity across the MedTech applications it cites. Task fit, safety, and reliable performance therefore matter as much as a robot’s nominal purchase cost when assessing a business case.
Hyundai Motor Group announced planned production capacity of 30,000 robots per year by 2028. That is a capacity goal, not proof of current output or a guaranteed cost reduction. Its January 2026 announcement describes planned post-deployment support such as over-the-air updates, maintenance, repair and overhaul, and remote monitoring, alongside a subscription RaaS approach. Hyundai plans to begin Atlas rollout with validated tasks such as parts sequencing in 2028, then expand toward component assembly by 2030. These are future plans, not evidence of current commercial availability or published pricing.
Quick Recap
How to turn estimates into a deployment budget
- Define the job. Specify the task, payload, work environment, shifts, and acceptable performance before requesting a price.
- Separate cost categories. Ask for acquisition or subscription, integration, software, commissioning, maintenance, spares, energy, supervision, and safety work as distinct line items.
- Ask for operating assumptions. Require the supplier to define utilization, uptime, maintenance inclusions, response times, and how downtime is treated.
- Model both contract forms. Compare purchase and RaaS over the same term and usage level, including fees, support, termination, and asset ownership.
- Calculate ROI with disclosed inputs. Use the actual labor costs and shifts the robot may displace or support, then account for supervision, utilization, and downtime rather than assuming continuous full performance.
