“Internet of Money” is a metaphor for digitally transferable value moving across an internet-native network. It is most often used in connection with Bitcoin: an open, peer-to-peer system intended to let people send value online directly, without routing every payment through a financial institution. It is not a formal technical standard or a synonym for every online payment service.

What does “Internet of Money” mean?

The phrase compares a network for moving value with the internet’s open protocols for moving information. In the Bitcoin context, it points to sending value over a peer-to-peer network rather than relying on a bank or another financial institution to handle every transfer. Bitcoin.org describes Bitcoin as an open-source peer-to-peer payment network with no central authority or banks: Bitcoin.org’s overview of Bitcoin.

The phrase is an explanatory metaphor, not a precise technical category. It does not, by itself, identify a particular protocol, guarantee how a payment will work, or describe every cryptocurrency or digital finance product.

Why is Bitcoin associated with the phrase?

Bitcoin’s original whitepaper, dated 31 October 2008, is titled “Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System.” Its abstract says that a purely peer-to-peer form of electronic cash would let online payments go directly from one party to another without going through a financial institution. That proposal captures the central idea behind describing Bitcoin as an “Internet of Money”: value could be sent over a network designed for direct participation, rather than treating a bank as the required intermediary. Bitcoin.org’s FAQ offers a simpler analogy, calling Bitcoin “pretty much like cash for the Internet,” while also describing it as a consensus network for a payment system and completely digital money: Bitcoin.org FAQ. The cash comparison is an analogy, not a claim that digital payments work exactly like handing someone physical cash.

Is “Internet of Money” a technical term?

No. It is not a formal standard, and it should not be used as a blanket label for all internet payments, cryptocurrencies, or financial apps. A conventional online card payment, for example, is an internet payment, but that fact alone does not make it a peer-to-peer money network. When using the phrase, name the network or system meant and explain who operates it or whether transfers can happen without a financial intermediary.

The Bitcoin whitepaper and Bitcoin.org’s description make openness, peer-to-peer transfer, and the role of intermediaries useful points of distinction. They do not establish a universal ranking of payment systems.

The first English volume is The Internet of Money: Talks by Andreas M. Antonopoulos. Its bibliographic record lists Merkle Bloom LLC as publisher, 2016 as the publication year, and 132 pages. Those details describe that edition, not Bitcoin’s performance or usage.

In a 2015 WIRED interview, Antonopoulos framed Bitcoin this way: “Bitcoin is the ‘internet of money and currency is just the first act’.” That is his historical characterization, not a technical guarantee or an established forecast: WIRED interview.

How to use the phrase clearly

  • For Bitcoin: Describe it as an open, peer-to-peer network for transferring digital value, and explain the role of financial intermediaries.
  • For another payment service: Name the service and say who operates or governs it instead of assuming “Internet of Money” applies.
  • When discussing the metaphor: Make clear that it describes an idea about internet-native value transfer, not a guarantee about cost, speed, privacy, or universal access.

For readers who want to explore Antonopoulos’s framing in more depth, the author’s site lists The Internet of Money by Andreas M. Antonopoulos. The book is optional further reading; it is not needed to understand the definition.
