In photos, HDR means high dynamic range: representing a wider span between the brightest highlights and darkest shadows. It can refer to combining exposures during capture and editing, or to displaying an HDR-rendered image on a compatible screen. Those are related, but they are not the same thing.
What does dynamic range mean in a photo?
Dynamic range is the span of brightness between an image’s darkest and brightest areas. In a high-contrast scene, a single exposure may not preserve detail in both: exposing for bright skies can leave shadows dark, while brightening the shadows can lose highlight detail. The useful range depends on the scene, the camera capture, and the final output. Adobe’s HDR photography guide explains the capture and exposure-bracketing context.

How does multi-exposure HDR work?
A common HDR workflow captures multiple versions of a scene at different exposures, then merges them in HDR-capable editing software. A darker frame can retain highlight detail, while a brighter one can reveal shadow detail; the merge combines usable information into an image with a broader tonal range than a single exposure might provide. The resulting image still needs to be rendered for its intended screen or print.
HDR is not the same as bracketing
Bracketing is the capture step: making a sequence of exposures with different settings. Merging is the processing step that combines those frames. Bracketing can be manual or automatic if the camera supports auto exposure bracketing. Nikon describes exposure bracketing as a way to capture alternatives for HDR work in its exposure-bracketing guide and HDR photography guide.

Not every HDR photo needs multiple exposures
A single RAW file can contain enough recoverable highlight and shadow detail for some scenes. If it does, editing that file may be sufficient; bracketing is useful when the scene’s contrast exceeds what one exposure can preserve. The choice is about the scene and the detail you need, not a rule that every HDR image must use three frames. Adobe discusses RAW latitude and this distinction in its 2023 HDR overview.
What is tone mapping?
HDR image data can span a wider range of brightness than an ordinary SDR screen or print can reproduce. Tone mapping adapts that data to the output’s narrower range so the image can retain a plausible appearance. It is a technical rendering step, not a synonym for oversaturated color or an exaggerated editing style.

HDR display output is a separate meaning of HDR: the image and viewing pipeline are prepared for a compatible HDR display. When the same image is viewed on an SDR display, it needs an SDR rendering or tone mapping. Adobe’s Camera Raw HDR output documentation explains this distinction and the need to adapt HDR photos for SDR viewing. A photo’s appearance can therefore vary with the editing application, file format, screen, and viewing environment.

- Try one RAW exposure when the scene’s contrast is manageable and the file retains the highlight and shadow detail you want.
- Bracket and merge exposures when a single capture cannot retain the needed detail across a high-contrast scene. A static subject makes the frames easier to combine; movement between frames can complicate a merge.
- Use in-camera HDR if your camera offers it and its processing suits your needs. Features and restrictions vary by model, so consult the manual rather than assuming the mode supports every file format or function.
- Choose HDR or SDR output for the audience based on the intended viewing device. Review tone, highlights, and shadows at the output size and on a compatible display when HDR output is the goal.
Why can an HDR photo look different on another screen?
The display may be SDR rather than HDR, or the application, file format, or viewing environment may handle HDR output differently. An SDR screen cannot reproduce the same brightness range as an HDR display, so the image must be adapted. For a Nikon Z7 or Z6, the manual also documents specific HDR-mode incompatibilities, including NEF (RAW) recording, bracketing, flash photography, and multiple exposure; those restrictions are specific to those models, not a universal camera rule.
