People may use it informally to mean an M.2 2230 SSD: a compact module 22 mm wide and 30 mm long. That is a likely interpretation, not a universal definition. Check the device’s documentation before buying a replacement.
What “half size M.2” means
M.2 is a family of module form factors, not one specific drive size. PCI-SIG describes both connectorized modules and soldered-down implementations, and its terminology refers separately to the older “Half-Mini Card” format. That older term is not interchangeable with “half size M.2.” (PCI-SIG M.2 overview; PCI-SIG Revision 5.1 page)
The reviewed PCI-SIG pages do not establish “half size M.2” as a formal size code. Without more context, it is best treated as informal or imprecise wording.
A likely interpretation: M.2 2230
If someone is describing a short M.2 SSD, they may mean the 2230 size. In that code, 22 indicates the module’s width in millimetres and 30 its length. SanDisk lists 2230 among its NVMe SSD sizes, alongside 2242 and 2280. (SanDisk SSD support)

- MEET THE NEXT GEN: Consider this a cheat code; Our Samsung 990 PRO Gen4 SSD helps you reach near max performance with lightning-fast speeds; Whether you’re a hardcore gamer or a tech guru, you’ll get power efficiency built for the final boss
- REACH THE NEXT LEVEL: Gen4 steps up with faster transfer speeds and high-performance bandwidth; With a more than 55% improvement in random performance compared to 980 PRO, it’s here for heavy computing and faster loading
- THE FASTEST SSD FROM THE WORLD'S FLASH MEMORY BRAND: The speed you need for any occasion; With read and write speeds up to 7450/6900 MB/s you’ll reach near max performance of PCIe 4.0 powering through for any use
- PLAY WITHOUT LIMITS: Give yourself some space with storage capacities from 1TB to 4TB; Sync all your saves and reign supreme in gaming, video editing, data analysis and more
- IT’S A POWER MOVE: Save the power for your performance; Get power efficiency all while experiencing up to 50% improved performance per watt over the 980 PRO; It makes every move more effective with less consumption
“M.2 2230” is therefore a useful search term, but it should not be assumed to be what every speaker means by “half size.”
How to check whether an M.2 2230 SSD fits
A matching physical size alone does not establish compatibility. Before ordering, check the host device’s official documentation for all of these:

- Ideal for high speed, low power storage
- Gen 4x4 NVMe PCle performance
- Up to 6,000MB/s read, 4,000MB/s write
- Includes Acronis cloning software
- 5-year limited warranty
- Supported length: Confirm that the device accepts a 30 mm module, rather than another M.2 length.
- Interface: Verify whether the slot supports the SSD interface you intend to use, such as NVMe. The M.2 form factor alone does not specify this.
- Key: Check the required connector key in the host documentation; a module that looks the right size may still not match the slot’s requirements.
- Module type: Confirm that the device uses a replaceable, connectorized SSD, not a different M.2 implementation such as a soldered-down module.
Because no laptop, motherboard, handheld, or other host model is specified here, compatibility cannot be determined for a particular device. If the manual confirms the required length, interface, and key, search for an “M.2 2230 NVMe SSD.”

“Half size” sounds as though it names a standard size, but the reviewed PCI-SIG material does not define it that way. It may be shorthand for a compact drive, a reference to a different card format, or simply a mistaken description. Ask for the exact M.2 size code—such as 2230—or the host device model before choosing a part.

SanDisk’s product support lists several M.2 SSD sizes, and a Micron 2500 technical-specification search result also lists 2230, 2242, and 2280 M.2 form factors. These examples show that multiple lengths exist; they do not identify which one any particular host supports. (Micron 2500 technical-product-specification listing)
