They are different things: you do not need special hardware to search Google.com.
What is Google Search hardware?
In general technical usage, the phrase refers to physical equipment in Google’s infrastructure that runs services including Google Search. Google describes its data centers as containing thousands of servers connected to local networks. It also says it designs server boards and networking equipment, as well as custom chips. Google’s infrastructure security design overview describes that environment broadly; it does not provide a complete bill of materials or a Search-specific server configuration.

This infrastructure is operated by Google. It is not a device or upgrade that an individual buys to improve access to Google Search.
What was the Google Search Appliance?
The Google Search Appliance (GSA) was a dedicated enterprise search system: Google software came installed on hardware so an organization could index and search its own content. Google’s legacy Search Appliance planning guide describes it as a combined software-and-hardware solution for businesses.

Rather than powering Google.com, an appliance crawled content held by an organization—for example, on web servers, file shares, and supported repositories—and built an index. Employees could then search that indexed material. Google’s legacy crawling introduction describes continuous and scheduled crawling and connectors for content-management systems.
Documented models and historical limits
Google’s legacy release 7.4 planning documentation names four models and gives these licensed document ceilings. These are historical specifications, not current product recommendations.

Its installation guidance discusses enterprise needs such as network configuration, physical placement, and an uninterruptible power supply—requirements for deploying an appliance, not for using Google Search as a consumer.

| Meaning | Purpose | Where it operates | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Search infrastructure | Runs Google services, including Search | Google data centers and infrastructure | Not a personal purchase or installation |
| Google Search Appliance | Indexes and searches an organization’s own content | An enterprise environment | A distinct legacy product, not equipment needed to use Google.com |
