Depending on the software and its configuration, checks may look for malware, suspicious behavior, vulnerable software, or risky settings—and may alert an administrator, block activity, quarantine a file, or recommend remediation. A clean result is useful information, not proof that a device is completely secure.
What endpoint security checking means
NIST defines endpoint security software as software installed on an endpoint, usually with elevated privileges, that supports the device’s secure operation or collects detailed information about it. Its examples include tools that report vulnerabilities and configurations, as well as software that searches for, removes, or quarantines malicious software. NIST’s definition and examples describe the software; “checking” is the assessment and monitoring it performs.

An endpoint is a device that connects to a network, such as a computer or mobile device. At an organizational level, endpoint security also includes the strategy, technology, and governance used to protect devices and their data—including managed and unmanaged devices. NIST’s zero-trust architecture groups endpoint protection with capabilities such as endpoint protection and detection, host firewalls, malware protection, vulnerability mitigation, and device management. NIST’s zero-trust architecture material treats these as parts of a broader protection approach, not one universal test.
What can an endpoint check look for?
The checks available depend on the product, operating system, permissions, policies, and settings in use. A particular endpoint tool may perform only some of the following:
#1 Best Overall
- SonicWall TZ270W Appliance Only - No Service Subscription (02-SSC-2823) - Combines enterprise-grade firewalling with integrated 802.11ac Wave 2 Wi-Fi to deliver secure wired and wireless connectivity in one compact device for small offices and clinics.
- Blocks zero-day threats and ransomware with Capture ATP sandboxing enhanced by RTDMI, plus IPS and anti-malware scanning for layered protection.
- Eliminates the need for separate access points in smaller spaces thanks to built-in high-speed wireless that is simple to deploy and manage.
- Supports VPN, SD-WAN, and TLS 1.3 decryption to secure hybrid cloud access and remote workers while maintaining usability and performance.
- Delivers gigabit performance with up to 750,000 concurrent connections to handle growth in users, devices, and SaaS applications.
- Malware: Search files or activity for known or suspicious malicious software. Depending on its capabilities and configuration, software may block or quarantine a threat.
- Suspicious behavior: Monitor or record activity that could indicate an attack. Endpoint detection and response (EDR) can provide visibility into endpoint activity and support investigation and response. Microsoft’s Defender for Endpoint documentation describes these capabilities for its service.
- Vulnerable software and risky configurations: Identify security gaps and report information that can help an administrator decide what to fix.
- Other protections and device information: A broader endpoint program may include host-firewall controls, encryption, web or network protection, attack-surface reduction, and management of device settings. NIST also lists endpoint information such as firmware, operating systems, applications, and user or service accounts.
A result may be an alert, a block or quarantine action, a remediation recommendation, or information for an administrator to investigate. What happens depends on the product and the organization’s configuration.
How it differs from a one-time antivirus scan
An antivirus scan is one kind of endpoint check. Endpoint security can cover more: EDR adds activity visibility and investigation or response capabilities, while an endpoint protection setup may also assess vulnerabilities and configurations or manage controls such as host firewalls and encryption. No single product should be assumed to include every capability.

Microsoft documents a platform-specific exception for Windows: when a non-Microsoft antimalware client is installed, Microsoft Defender Antivirus runs in passive mode. Microsoft says passive mode does not perform real-time, scheduled, or on-demand scans; some Defender for Endpoint functions, including file scanning, depend on Defender Antivirus. Microsoft also recommends configuring security intelligence and platform updates. This describes Microsoft’s Windows setup, not a general rule for other endpoint products. See Microsoft’s compatibility guidance.
How to interpret a clean result
A check reports what the installed software can see and is configured to assess. Its value is therefore limited by visibility, configuration, update state, permissions, and operating mode. A clean result means the check did not report a problem within those limits; it does not certify that the device has no vulnerabilities, threats, or misconfigurations.

- XGS 88 with 3 Years Standard Protection - Next-generation firewall appliance with Standard Protection subscription providing firewall, VPN, intrusion prevention, web security, and application control, managed through Sophos Central for unified policies and reporting.
- Equipped with 4 x 2.5 GE copper ports, supporting up to 9.9 Gbps firewall performance for small offices and branch deployments.
- Protects users from ransomware, malware, phishing, and intrusion attempts before they reach endpoints or applications.
- SD-WAN features deliver reliable, optimized application performance and intelligent multi link failover.
- Includes Standard Protection – Comprehensive security package with firewall, intrusion prevention, VPN, web security, and application control to defend against everyday threats and keep business operations safe.
For an organization, the practical question is not simply whether a product “checks” a device, but which checks it performs and what follows from a finding. Useful comparison dimensions include supported device types and operating systems, malware prevention and behavioral detection, vulnerability and configuration visibility, investigation and response actions, central management and integration, and update and compatibility requirements. These are functional criteria, not a ranking of vendors.
