In Excel, deleting a row or column removes that entire worksheet row or column. The remaining rows move up, or the remaining columns move left, to fill the gap. This is different from pressing the Delete key, which clears cell contents without removing the row or column.
What deleting a row or column does
Rows are identified by numbered headings; columns by lettered headings. Deleting a whole row or column removes that worksheet structure, and the content beyond it shifts to close the gap. Microsoft says an Excel worksheet has 1,048,576 rows and 16,384 columns. Microsoft Support explains row and column insertion and deletion.
How to delete an entire row or column
- Select the row or column. Click its row number or column letter. Alternatively, select a cell in the target row and press Shift+Space, or select a cell in the target column and press Ctrl+Space. Microsoft’s selection guidance documents these heading and keyboard methods.
- Run the structural Delete command. Use Home > Delete > Delete Sheet Rows or Home > Delete > Delete Sheet Columns. You can also right-click the selected row or column heading and choose Delete. The label may vary slightly by Excel version.
- Alternatively, use the Windows shortcut. With the row or column selected, press Ctrl+Minus. Microsoft lists this shortcut for deleting selected cells, rows, or columns in Windows Excel; see its Excel keyboard-shortcut reference.
Delete key, delete cells, and delete a whole row are different

Choose the whole-row or whole-column command when you intend to remove that structure. If you only want to clear entries while keeping the layout intact, use the Delete key instead. When Excel presents choices for deleting cells, check whether the operation will shift cells up or left before confirming.
Which method should you use?
- Ribbon: Use Home > Delete when you want an explicit command for deleting sheet rows or columns.
- Heading menu: Right-click a row number or column letter for a direct Delete option.
- Keyboard: Select the row with Shift+Space or the column with Ctrl+Space, then use Ctrl+Minus in Windows Excel.
Microsoft documents shortcuts by platform, so check its shortcut reference for the Excel version and device you use rather than assuming the Windows shortcut applies everywhere.
