Cisco Meraki SD-WAN is a group of WAN management and traffic-steering capabilities built around Meraki Auto VPN on supported WAN appliances. It helps administrators connect sites, use multiple internet or WAN links, and apply policies to steer or prioritize traffic as link availability and performance change. It is not a single standalone software feature: what it can do depends on the appliance, firmware, uplinks, configuration, and licensing.
How Meraki SD-WAN works
Meraki Auto VPN automates the setup and maintenance of site-to-site VPN connections through the Meraki Dashboard. Participating MX and Z-series appliances advertise participating subnets and WAN addresses. The Dashboard generates route information and distributes tunnel keys and configuration; Cisco says Auto VPN traffic is encrypted using an AES cipher. Cisco’s Auto VPN documentation describes the setup and operation.

When an appliance has multiple uplinks, it can form Auto VPN tunnels over both interfaces if configured and supported. Administrators can use uplink settings, load balancing, VPN traffic policies, and dynamic path selection to determine which eligible traffic uses which path. Without multi-uplink Auto VPN, Cisco documents use of the primary WAN link with failover to the secondary if the primary fails. These are configuration-dependent behaviors, not guaranteed defaults for every deployment. Cisco’s Meraki SD-WAN architecture guide and Auto VPN documentation explain the available mechanisms.

What capabilities does it provide?
Multiple uplinks and resilience
Supported appliances can use multiple WAN connections, with settings for primary-uplink behavior, load balancing, and failover. The exact options depend on the hardware and firmware. This can help a branch maintain connectivity when a circuit becomes unavailable, but the presence of two links alone does not establish how traffic will be distributed or how quickly a particular application will recover.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Traffic steering and shaping
Traffic shaping can prioritize or limit traffic using applications and other supported traffic signatures. VPN flow preferences let administrators choose paths for eligible traffic. These controls are intended to give selected traffic—such as voice—configured treatment rather than treating all traffic identically. Cisco notes that traffic shaping applies to Auto VPN traffic, not traffic traversing a non-Meraki VPN tunnel; VPN flow preferences likewise apply to Meraki Auto VPN rather than non-Meraki VPN peers. See Cisco’s traffic-shaping documentation and VPN flow preferences documentation.
Monitoring and operational visibility
The SD-WAN monitoring view provides Auto VPN tunnel performance information that administrators can use to understand dynamic path-selection decisions. Meraki Insight WAN Health offers a broader view of uplinks and requires the relevant license. Cisco describes these views in its SD-WAN monitoring documentation and WAN Health documentation.

What hardware is required?
Meraki SD-WAN capabilities run on supported Meraki WAN appliances, including MX and Z-series devices for Auto VPN participation. A deployment needs an appliance that supports the required uplink types and features, plus WAN connections appropriate to the site. Cellular connectivity, for example, is available only on models that include or support it. Cisco’s MX67 and MX68 product documentation describes cellular-equipped options for small remote sites with unreliable WAN circuits or a need for additional redundancy; it is an example, not a complete model comparison.
Before choosing hardware, verify the current model’s supported uplinks, firmware requirements, and the specific SD-WAN features needed. Also check licensing for any monitoring feature you plan to use.

How to interpret failover claims
Cisco’s Meraki SD-WAN overview reports sub-second failover and failback for dynamic path selection, and 30–40 seconds for Auto VPN tunnel failover and failback. Those figures describe different mechanisms and should not be treated as an end-to-end application recovery guarantee. The available documentation does not establish the release conditions or test circumstances applicable to every current deployment. Actual interruption depends on the failure, configuration, appliance, and traffic involved.
In particular, distinguish among a path-selection change, an Auto VPN tunnel failover, and loss of a WAN circuit. They are not interchangeable events, and no universal recovery time can be promised from these figures.

Checks to make before deployment
- Confirm that the appliance supports the WAN interfaces, cellular options, and SD-WAN controls your design requires.
- Identify whether the traffic to be shaped or steered travels over Meraki Auto VPN; the documented shaping and flow-preference restrictions apply to non-Meraki VPN peers.
- Decide whether Auto VPN should use one WAN link or multiple links, and define the intended load-balancing and failover behavior.
- Check firmware and licensing requirements for the features and monitoring views you plan to use, including Meraki Insight WAN Health.
- Validate the selected configuration and expected behavior against current Cisco documentation before relying on it for a critical application.
