Antivirus protects primarily against malware: malicious files, programs and apps that can damage systems, steal data or give an attacker control. Modern tools may combine signatures with behavioral analysis, block known threats and quarantine suspicious items. They do not replace software updates, phishing awareness, encryption or backups.
You may not need to buy a separate antivirus subscription. On supported, updated systems, built-in defenses can provide substantial protection. The right decision depends on your operating system, whether its security features are enabled and current, the devices you manage and any capabilities your setup is missing.

What antivirus protection actually covers
Antivirus is a security control for detecting, blocking or removing malware—software deliberately made to harm a device, access data without permission or let someone else control it. Malware can arrive as an email attachment, a downloaded installer, a malicious document, a drive-by web download or an app from an untrusted source.
CISA’s general guidance describes antivirus as part of a baseline that also includes a firewall, current virus definitions and spyware scanning. Many antivirus products include spyware detection, but the exact features and quality vary by product, operating system and configuration.
#1 Best Overall
- THREAT DETECTION – Stay one step ahead. Suspicious links, risky sites, viruses, and scams, caught automatically before they reach you.
- PERSONAL INFO PROTECTION – Keep your personal info safer. Identity monitoring watches for your exposed info and tells you what to do about it.
- SECURE CONNECTIONS – Just a few easy clicks, and we'll automatically protect your info on public Wi‑Fi, every time you connect.

- MORE THAN ANTIVIRUS – Scam protection, identity monitoring, VPN, web protection, and antivirus work together to protect you, all in one place.
Malicious files and applications
Traditional antivirus compares files and program code with known malware signatures. When a match is found, the software can block execution, quarantine the file or remove it. Signature detection is effective for threats that have already been identified, which is why definition and engine updates matter.
Behavior that looks malicious
Newer defenses also watch what a file or app does. Behavioral analysis can flag actions such as making unusual system changes, attempting to access protected files or launching other processes in a suspicious sequence. CISA’s mobile-device capability guidance describes both signature-based detection and behavioral analysis, including looking for anomalous app behavior.
Known malware and mobile threats
Technical mobile-threat-defense guidance from CISA uses the capability requirement that a system “shall block the execution of known malware onto mobile devices.” That is a description of what a capable security system should do, not a guarantee made for every consumer phone or security app. Mobile defenses can also examine app behavior and device state rather than relying only on a file signature.
Spyware and unwanted surveillance tools
Spyware is software that attempts to monitor activity or collect information covertly. CISA notes that many antivirus products incorporate spyware detection. Coverage is not identical across products, so check whether a tool scans for potentially unwanted applications, browser changes and other unwanted software if those are concerns.

How antivirus detects and stops a threat
- Inspection: The security engine examines a download, file, running process or app installation. It may compare code with signatures and assess its behavior or reputation.
- Pre-execution blocking: If the item is recognized as dangerous, the system can stop it from running. Blocking is safer than allowing a malicious program to start and trying to undo its changes later.
- Quarantine or removal: A detected file may be isolated so it cannot execute. Some tools then delete it; others let an administrator review and restore a false positive.
- Ongoing monitoring: Real-time protection watches files and processes as they are opened or launched. On-demand scanning checks when you start a manual or scheduled scan.
- Updates: The engine and its malware definitions must be updated so they recognize newer threats. CISA specifically advises keeping virus definitions up to date.
These layers reduce risk, but no antivirus can promise complete protection. A threat may exploit an unpatched application, persuade a user to disclose credentials or encrypt files before a detection rule is available.
What antivirus does not replace
Antivirus addresses malware. Several other controls address different failure modes and must remain in place.
Operating-system and application updates
Security patches close vulnerabilities in the operating system, browser and applications. Antivirus may detect a malicious payload that exploits a flaw, but it cannot reliably repair the vulnerable software itself. Install updates from the device’s normal update mechanism and keep supported versions in service.
Phishing awareness
A phishing message can lead you to a genuine sign-in page copied by an attacker, persuade you to reveal a one-time code or trick you into authorizing a harmful action. Antivirus may scan a link or attachment, but it cannot make every social-engineering decision for you. Check the sender, destination and request before entering credentials or opening an unexpected file.

Encryption
Device and removable-media encryption helps protect data if equipment is lost or stolen. It protects stored information; antivirus is designed to detect malicious software. They solve different problems and should be used together where the platform supports them.
Backups and recovery
CISA recommends protecting important files with backups to an external drive or a vetted cloud service. A backup gives you a recovery path after ransomware, accidental deletion, hardware failure or a compromised account. Antivirus can sometimes stop ransomware, but it cannot guarantee that encrypted or deleted files will be restored.
Firewalls
CISA’s baseline advice pairs antivirus with a firewall. A firewall controls network connections; antivirus focuses on malicious code and activity. One does not replace the other.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDo you still need a separate antivirus product?
There is no universal requirement to buy an additional program. Start by identifying what your current platform already supplies and whether those protections are active, updated and appropriate for how you use the device.

Windows 10 and Windows 11
CISA identifies Microsoft Defender Antivirus as built into Windows 10 and Windows 11. It is used to protect and detect endpoint threats, including file-based and fileless malware. On a supported, updated Windows installation, verify that Defender and its related security features are enabled before considering another product.
A separate product may make sense if you have a documented requirement for a capability your current setup lacks, need centralized management for many devices or must satisfy an organization’s security policy. The presence of a paid product is not, by itself, evidence that the built-in protection is disabled or inadequate.
ChromeOS
CISA describes ChromeOS as including safe-browsing practices, executable blocking and automatic data and file backups. Those features can reduce common malware and recovery risks, but they do not mean every ChromeOS configuration is identical. Keep the operating system and browser current, use the device’s security settings and confirm that backup behavior meets your needs.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →macOS and phones
The available evidence does not establish a complete, current comparison of macOS or mobile antivirus products. Do not assume that a phone or Mac needs a paid antivirus app—or that it never does—without checking the platform’s built-in protections, update status and your specific security requirements. On any platform, avoid sideloading untrusted software, review app permissions and keep the system supported and patched.

A practical decision framework
Use these questions in order. They lead to a more defensible decision than choosing a product because of a feature list or a sales claim.
- Is the operating system supported? An unsupported system may no longer receive security fixes. Upgrade or replace it before relying on an additional scanner.
- Are built-in protections enabled? Check the security dashboard for real-time protection, firewall status, safe-browsing controls and update status. Resolve warnings rather than installing a second tool immediately.
- Are definitions and engines current? A disabled update service can leave even a capable product unable to recognize newer malware.
- What do you need to protect? A single, carefully managed personal device has different needs from a household with many devices or an organization that must administer policies centrally.
- What capability is missing? Consider a separate product only when you can name the gap—such as centralized administration, a required platform feature or a policy requirement—and confirm that the product supports your exact operating-system version.
- Can you maintain it? Two products that both attempt real-time scanning can conflict, reduce performance or create confusing alerts. Follow the platform vendor’s guidance when choosing whether to run more than one.
How to check and maintain protection
On a Windows PC
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Review Virus & threat protection. Confirm that real-time protection and protection updates are not reporting an error.
- Run a manual scan when you have a reason to suspect a file or device. Use the available full-scan option for a broader check.
- Open Firewall & network protection and confirm that the firewall is active for the network profiles you use.
- Install pending Windows and application updates, then restart if requested.
- Investigate warnings before installing another security product. If you do add one, check which product is registered as the active real-time provider.
On ChromeOS
- Install ChromeOS updates when they are offered and restart to complete them.
- Keep Safe Browsing enabled in Chrome’s privacy and security settings.
- Review downloaded files and remove software you do not recognize; do not run executable content from an untrusted source.
- Confirm that the device’s automatic backup and synchronization behavior covers the files you actually need to recover.
For phones and other platforms
- Use the vendor’s official system-update mechanism and keep the device within its supported update period.
- Install apps through the platform’s official store unless you have a specific, trusted reason to do otherwise.
- Review permissions for apps that request access to messages, accessibility controls, storage or device administration.
- Use the platform’s built-in scanning, browsing and account-security controls, and treat unexpected security alerts as a reason to verify—not automatically purchase—another app.
Comparing antivirus options without relying on marketing
If you decide that an additional product is appropriate, compare capabilities that affect your situation rather than looking for a universal “best” label. Current independent test scores and product rankings are not established here, so no brand can be named as superior on this evidence.
| Comparison point | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Platform support | Does it explicitly support your operating-system edition and version, including mobile or business editions where relevant? |
| Detection scope | Does it cover malicious files, apps, spyware and suspicious behavior, or only provide an on-demand file scanner? |
| Real-time versus on-demand | Will it monitor downloads and running processes continuously, or scan only when you start it? |
| Update handling | Are engine and definition updates automatic, and can an administrator verify that they succeeded? |
| Device impact | What happens to startup time, battery life, storage and CPU use on the devices you actually manage? |
| Privacy and data handling | What telemetry is collected, where is it processed and how long is it retained? |
| Administration | Can you view alerts and enforce settings across multiple devices if that is required? |
| Cost and renewal | What is included for the stated term, which devices are covered and what changes at renewal? |
Read the compatibility and privacy documentation before installation. A product that cannot update, conflicts with existing protection or lacks support for your edition is not a useful addition, regardless of its feature count.
When protection is missing or reports an error
- Definitions are out of date: Connect the device to a trusted network, run the security product’s update function and retry. If updates repeatedly fail, check system date and time, available storage and whether another security program is blocking the service.
- Real-time protection is disabled: Look for an administrator policy, an expired subscription or a second security product registered as active. Do not leave the device unprotected while troubleshooting.
- A suspicious file was opened: Disconnect from networks if you suspect active compromise, avoid signing in on the affected device and run a current full scan. Change important passwords from a known-clean device and restore from a verified backup if necessary.
- Repeated false positives: Confirm the file’s source and digital signature before allowing it. Do not create broad exclusions merely to stop alerts; exclusions can remove the very protection you need.
- Ransomware or data loss occurred: Preserve evidence, isolate affected systems and use clean backups. Antivirus may prevent some infections, but recovery depends on backup integrity and incident response.
What managed organizations do differently
CISA’s ransomware guidance recommends automatic antivirus and antimalware updates and describes centrally managed antivirus. In an organization, administrators can enforce settings, monitor update status and respond consistently across endpoints. That guidance supports centralized management where a business requires it; it is not a requirement for every home user to purchase enterprise software.
Bottom line
Antivirus is one layer for malware detection and blocking, with modern implementations using signatures, behavioral signals, real-time monitoring and quarantine. It cannot substitute for patched software, careful handling of phishing, encryption, firewalls or reliable backups. Check the protections already built into your operating system first: CISA identifies Microsoft Defender Antivirus on Windows 10 and 11 and describes several built-in ChromeOS defenses. Add another product only when a clearly identified capability, management need or security policy justifies it, and keep whichever protection you use enabled and current.
