Short answer: Amazon Kids is a free child profile with parental controls; Amazon Kids+ is an optional paid subscription that adds a curated library of children’s books, games, videos, music, apps, Alexa Skills and audiobooks. A Kids+ membership can be used on compatible devices, so it is not required to use a child profile or to own an Amazon Kids tablet. Whether it is worth paying for depends on how often your child uses the included catalog and on the current price and renewal terms.
What an Amazon Kids tablet subscription includes
The subscription is called Amazon Kids+, not simply “Amazon Kids.” Amazon describes Kids+ as a curated collection of thousands of ad-free, age-appropriate children’s items. The listed categories include books, games, videos, music, apps and Alexa Skills; Amazon’s developer FAQ also lists movies, Audible content and games. Amazon names Disney, Nickelodeon, Marvel, LEGO, Sesame Street and PBS Kids as examples of brands represented in the library. These are examples, not a guarantee that any particular title is currently available for your child, device or country. Amazon Kids help and Amazon’s Kids+ overview describe the service and its content.

Kids+ is a content membership, not a bundle of every children’s service or purchase. Some apps may require another subscription or a Kids profile, and app experiences may include advertising, external links, in-app purchases or requests for personal information. Parents should review individual apps rather than assume that the subscription makes every app ad-free or removes all purchase prompts. Amazon’s child-profile content guidance explains these limitations.

Amazon Kids and Amazon Kids+: what is the difference?
| Feature | Amazon Kids | Amazon Kids+ |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A child profile and parental-control experience | A paid subscription to a curated children’s content library |
| Cost | Amazon says parents can create a child profile at no additional cost on supported devices | Paid membership; current US pricing and plan differences are not established in the cited official pages |
| Content access | Parents can make selected books, videos, apps and games available, including eligible content they own or share | Adds access to the Kids+ library, subject to device, marketplace and content availability |
| Controls | Includes child-profile controls such as access settings and screen-time management | Uses the same profile environment; the subscription adds content, not a replacement for parental controls |
Amazon says the free profile can be created on supported devices, and Kids+ is a separate subscription. See Amazon’s explanation of Amazon Kids and the Fire Tablet FAQ for the distinction. You do not need Kids+ just to set up a child profile or use its controls.

Where Kids+ works—and what to check
Amazon lists compatible Kindle, Fire TV, Fire Tablet and Alexa-enabled device families. Compatibility and available features vary by device, and Amazon limits availability to select marketplaces. Check that your country and the specific hardware you plan to use are supported before subscribing; a Kids+ membership should not be treated as universally compatible with every tablet or device. Amazon’s Kids help page notes the device and marketplace qualifications.
What parents can manage
Amazon’s Parent Dashboard provides tools to manage the child’s profile and review recent activity. Depending on the control and device, parents can set weekday and weekend access, screen-time limits, educational goals and age filters. The mobile dashboard also supports settings for device access, in-app calling, app-store access, in-app purchases and web browsing. Details and available controls are described in Amazon’s Parent Dashboard help.
Subscription library content is managed separately from Amazon content a parent has bought and shared. Amazon says certain items cannot be added through child-profile content controls, including personal documents, music, Prime Video rentals and videos included with Prime. That distinction matters if you expect a child profile to show every item in an adult account’s library. Amazon’s content-sharing guidance lists these exclusions.

In an announcement dated October 9, 2026, Amazon said every Amazon Kids Tablet comes with a full year of Kids+. That statement applies to the Kids Tablet offer described in the announcement; it does not establish identical terms for every compatible tablet, marketplace or promotion. Before buying, check the live product listing for the device you want and read the offer’s subscription and renewal terms. Amazon’s October 9, 2026 announcement describes the bundle.
The tablet, the child profile and the membership are separate things: buying hardware does not mean every tablet includes the same Kids+ period, and Kids+ is not a requirement for using the free profile. Compare the specific bundle with the standalone membership option available in your marketplace.
Is Amazon Kids+ worth it for your family?
The answer depends on actual use, not just the size of the advertised catalog. Amazon calls the library “thousands” of items, but the cited current materials do not provide a dated, independently auditable title count. Nor do they establish current US monthly and annual prices, Prime or multi-child plan differences, renewal charges or cancellation rules. Verify those details on the current sign-up and offer screens before deciding; a value judgment based on an unverified price would be unreliable.
It may be worthwhile if
- Your child regularly uses several of the included content types, such as books, games and videos, rather than relying on a small set of titles.
- You want a managed library alongside profile tools such as screen-time limits, age filters and activity review.
- The device and marketplace you use support Kids+, and the current subscription or bundle terms suit your budget.
It may not be worthwhile if
- You mainly want a child profile and parental controls, which Amazon says are available without the paid membership on supported devices.
- Your child uses only a few titles you have already bought or shared.
- The apps or services your child prefers require separate subscriptions, or their in-app features do not fit your preferences.
Before subscribing or buying a tablet, check the actual catalog for the child’s preferred content, device and country compatibility, the current standalone price, and any bundle’s duration and renewal terms. The right comparison is the cost of the offer available to you against the content your child will genuinely use—not the tablet price alone.
