What Does an AI PC NPU Do, and Do You Need One?

An NPU accelerates AI tasks only when software supports it. Find out what 40 TOPS means, what an NPU can do, and whether your next PC needs one.

A neural processing unit (NPU) is a processor built to handle certain AI calculations efficiently. It can run supported AI features on your PC, but only when the software is designed to use it. For everyday work or cloud-based AI, most people do not need to choose a computer just because it has an NPU. Consider one if a specific on-device app or Windows feature you want requires it.

What does an NPU do in a PC?

A PC’s CPU handles general-purpose computing, while its GPU is designed for graphics and other parallel workloads. An NPU specializes in the mathematical operations used by neural-network models. Microsoft describes NPUs as hardware designed to execute the deep-learning math used by AI models in its Copilot+ PCs developer guidance.

The operating system and application decide whether supported work is sent to the NPU. Microsoft says software must specifically target the hardware; an NPU does not automatically accelerate every AI feature or application. For developers building local AI inference on Windows, Microsoft recommends Windows ML in that same guidance.

The practical role is an efficient accelerator for supported AI inference. When a feature is designed for the NPU, it may leave the CPU and GPU freer for other work and improve battery life. Those benefits depend on the task and device, however; they are not guarantees that every AI job will be faster or use less power.

What can an NPU do in everyday use?

Windows examples include video-call effects such as automatic framing, eye-contact correction, background effects, portrait lighting, creative filters and voice focus; live captions and translation; and selected image, search and other Copilot+ experiences. The available effects depend on the PC’s hardware and processor family. Microsoft’s Windows Studio Effects guidance, for example, identifies some effects that work on NPUs below 40 TOPS and others limited to Snapdragon Copilot+ PCs.

“On-device” means a supported model runs on the PC; it does not mean every part of a feature works offline. Microsoft’s current Copilot+ PC feature list notes that some Paint and Photos features use cloud services and require an internet connection. Requirements can also vary by language, region, processor, account, subscription, device hardware and content limits. Check the requirements for the exact feature you plan to use before relying on it offline.

What does 40 TOPS mean?

TOPS means trillions of operations per second. Qualcomm’s “What TOPS Means” explainer describes TOPS as a measure of operations in one second and notes that frequency and numerical precision matter when interpreting the figure.

Microsoft sets a 40+ TOPS NPU requirement for many Copilot+ PC experiences. Its developer guidance and Windows specifications describe that threshold for those features, while the Studio Effects guidance lists a narrower set that can work below 40 TOPS. In other words, 40 TOPS is a useful eligibility marker for many Copilot+ features, not a universal minimum for all AI functions.

  • Operating System: Windows 11 Home. Ice Blue. Stylish modern design with rounded edges that is easy to carry around.

TOPS alone is not a reliable way to rank laptops. A peak figure does not show whether the app you want supports that NPU, which precision it uses, how the system performs during sustained work or how the whole laptop behaves on battery. Compare support for your intended feature first, then consider independent testing of the exact laptop configuration, along with its CPU, GPU, memory, cooling, battery life and price.

Do you need an NPU?

  • Probably not as a standalone requirement: You mainly browse, write documents, join video calls or use cloud-based AI services, and have no particular NPU-dependent feature in mind. AMD distinguishes cloud-based Copilot services from on-device Copilot+ features in its Ryzen AI information; ordinary Windows use does not generally require a high-performance NPU.
  • It may be useful: You regularly use a supported on-device model, NPU-accelerated video-call processing or a Copilot+ feature that requires a high-performance NPU. Verify the feature’s current hardware and software requirements before buying.
  • You develop AI software: The NPU matters if your model, framework, runtime, driver and application path support it. Hardware alone cannot accelerate a model that the software does not send to the NPU.

What should you check before buying?

  1. Identify the exact feature or model. Confirm that it runs on the candidate NPU and check requirements for Windows version, language, region, internet access, account, subscription and processor family.
  2. Check NPU eligibility. If you want a Copilot+ feature, confirm the precise PC configuration meets its stated requirements; 40+ TOPS is the threshold Microsoft documents for many such features.
  3. Compare the complete laptop. Review independent results for the exact configuration and the workloads you care about. An NPU does not replace the CPU, GPU, memory, thermal design or battery.
  4. Verify software support. Check which runtime and model path the application supports, and whether it can use the NPU on that device.
  5. Confirm the SKU and compatibility. Product names can cover configurations with different processors or capabilities. Check the precise processor, NPU specifications, operating system and peripheral support before purchase.

Vendor figures are specifications, not directly comparable independent test results. Qualcomm’s 2024 explainer cites 45 TOPS for Snapdragon X Series devices, while its Snapdragon X Series product page advertises up to 80 TOPS for next-generation models. AMD’s Ryzen AI software page provides specifications for selected processors and describes support for porting models to selected Ryzen AI laptop NPUs. Treat these as vendor claims tied to their products, not evidence that one brand is faster for your particular workload.
