In the United States, FDA records describe different uses for implanted systems and external, non-invasive devices: implanted VNS is an add-on treatment for specific patients with drug-resistant focal-onset seizures or treatment-resistant depression, while external devices are described for migraine and cluster headache. These are not interchangeable devices, and no single VNS device should be assumed to treat every condition.
What a vagus nerve stimulator does
Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) is a form of neuromodulation: electrical signals are used to affect nerve signaling. The vagus nerve connects the brain with organs, but FDA device records establish how these devices deliver stimulation and their labeled uses—not one complete biological explanation for how stimulation works in every condition.

Implanted VNS
An implanted VNS Therapy System uses a generator and lead placed under the skin, with the lead delivering stimulation to the left vagus nerve in the neck. It requires surgery and specialist management. FDA labeling describes it as adjunctive therapy, meaning it is used alongside other care rather than as a stand-alone cure.

External, non-invasive VNS
An external device is applied to the side of the neck rather than implanted. FDA’s classification describes a handheld device with a battery, signal-generating and amplifying electronics, controls, and skin-contact surfaces; the device category uses conductive electrode gel. That description does not establish that a generic electrical gadget has the same regulatory status, indication, or effect.

Which conditions VNS devices are used for
The indications depend on the device type and the patient group. The following describes uses in U.S. FDA records; it is not a claim that every model is authorized for each condition.

These records do not establish the other proposed or studied conditions as FDA-approved uses of these devices. In particular, they do not support presenting anxiety, inflammation, long COVID, weight loss, or broad claims about improving “vagus nerve tone” as established indications.

How to distinguish a regulated VNS device from a generic stimulator
The term “vagus nerve stimulator” can refer to different technologies. Before drawing conclusions from a product description, check the exact model and its labeling rather than relying on the general term.
- Implanted or external: an implanted system requires surgery; an external device is applied to the neck and has its own use instructions.
- Specific indication: confirm that the device’s stated condition and eligible patient group match the intended use. An indication for migraine, for example, does not establish use for epilepsy or depression.
- Role in care: implanted VNS is adjunctive for the indications described above; it is not a replacement for the rest of a clinician-directed treatment plan.
- Device identity: a consumer listing or generic stimulator should not be assumed to match an FDA-described device or its authorization simply because it uses electrical stimulation near the neck.
Limits, risks, and precautions for implanted VNS
Implanted VNS involves surgery and can have surgical and device-related risks. FDA labeling states, “VNS Therapy is not a cure for epilepsy” and “VNS Therapy has not been determined to be a cure for depression.” For depression, response varies, benefit may take months, and many patients continue antidepressant medication and/or electroconvulsive therapy.

FDA labeling contraindicates shortwave diathermy, microwave diathermy, and therapeutic ultrasound diathermy for patients with an implanted system. It also directs clinicians to follow the system’s MRI instructions. If you have an implant, tell healthcare professionals before treatment or imaging and follow your care team’s device-specific guidance.

If you are considering VNS, ask which device and exact indication are being discussed, whether it is intended as an add-on to your current care, and what the procedure or device-specific precautions involve. For depression, the FDA indication described here applies only to adults meeting the treatment-history criteria; it is not a self-treatment or a reason to stop prescribed care. For an external device, confirm its current labeling and instructions for your specific condition.
