A managed IT services provider (MSP) takes ongoing responsibility for specific IT tasks a business has agreed to outsource. Depending on the contract, that can include helpdesk support, managing applications or infrastructure, monitoring systems, maintenance, and some security services. The term “MSP” does not guarantee a standard package: the contract defines what the provider handles, what the customer retains, and what service levels apply.
What services can an MSP provide?
An MSP provides continuing support or administration rather than a one-time repair. The scope may cover some or all of the following areas; each must be confirmed with the individual provider.
- IT support and helpdesk: Remote support for users and helpdesk services for reported problems.
- Applications and infrastructure: Administration of business applications and underlying IT infrastructure.
- Network and endpoint operations: A Canadian Centre for Cyber Security overview lists help desk, endpoint, backup, network, and firewall management as examples of baseline MSP operations.
- Cloud operations: The UK government describes cloud services that may include configuration, maintenance, event monitoring, and performance optimization.
- Security services: Some providers offer managed security services, but an MSP label alone does not mean the provider monitors threats or responds to security incidents.
The UK government also notes that these services may be delivered on a customer’s premises or through provider or third-party facilities. The delivery location does not, by itself, establish which tasks are included.
What does an MSP handle day to day?
Day-to-day work follows the responsibilities agreed in the service contract. A provider might respond to user requests, administer covered systems, maintain infrastructure, or monitor specified events. Hours of coverage, response targets, escalation procedures, and any remedies for missed service levels depend on the agreement; there is no universal MSP schedule or service package.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Ask the provider to distinguish routine operations from work that requires customer approval, falls outside the contract, or carries additional charges. Also confirm which users, locations, applications, devices, and other systems are covered.
Who is responsible for what?
The provider and customer should agree on a clear division of duties before service begins. The UK National Cyber Security Centre recommends documenting what the MSP owns and what remains the customer’s responsibility, preferably in a responsibility matrix. A contract and its service-level agreement (SLA) should make service expectations understandable rather than relying on the MSP label.

For each important task, clarify who performs it, who approves changes, who needs to provide access or information, and who is contacted when an issue requires escalation. Outsourcing does not remove the organization’s legal responsibility for protecting its data, according to the Canadian Centre for Cyber Security.
Is an MSP the same as an MSSP?
Not necessarily. An MSP commonly handles general IT operations such as helpdesk, endpoint, network, firewall, and backup management. A managed security service provider (MSSP) focuses on security services. When evaluating an MSSP, the Canadian Centre for Cyber Security advises examining how it manages, monitors, responds to, and reports security incidents.

A business may need general IT operations, specialist security monitoring and incident services, or both. Ask providers to specify which security functions they actually perform and how those functions connect to the organization’s own responsibilities.

- Which systems, users, locations, and services are covered, and what is explicitly excluded?
- What work does the provider perform, and what must the customer do or approve?
- What does the SLA measure, what response expectations apply, and how are escalations handled?
- Which security services are included, including any monitoring, incident response, and reporting?
- How are backups arranged and tested, who is responsible for recovery, and do the arrangements meet the business’s recovery needs?
- What customer access, information, approvals, or other obligations are required for the service to work?
The NCSC specifically recommends reviewing the SLA and checking backup arrangements, testing, and fit with the organization’s needs. Those details matter because having a backup service does not, by itself, establish that restoration has been tested or that recovery will meet business requirements.
