A hybrid work schedule divides work between a workplace and a remote location. It does not prescribe a standard number of office days: an employer might set fixed days, let employees choose days to meet a minimum, or base attendance on team and role needs. A three-days-remote, two-days-in-the-workplace week is one possible arrangement—not a universal rule.
What a hybrid schedule can look like in a typical week
The pattern depends on who sets the workplace days and how much in-person work the role requires. These examples illustrate common arrangements; an employer’s policy may differ.
| Example schedule | Who chooses the days? | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Monday and Tuesday in the workplace; Wednesday through Friday remote | Employer | A fixed weekly split with the same attendance days each week. |
| Two workplace days each week; employee selects which days | Employee, within the attendance requirement | A flexible split. The employee has choice, but colleagues may need to coordinate their days. |
| One set workplace day plus one additional day chosen by the employee | Shared | A combination of fixed and flexible days. |
| At least one workplace day, with remote work on the other days | Employer policy determines the minimum; other days may be flexible | An occasional-attendance example. Some employers may describe arrangements with infrequent visits as remote-first, but terminology varies. |
Acas defines hybrid working as a mixture of remote and workplace work, and gives three days at home and two in the workplace as an example. Its guidance was last updated 10 June 2026. Read Acas guidance on hybrid working.
Common hybrid work schedule models
Fixed weekly split
The employer specifies both the number of workplace days and which days they are. A recurring pattern—such as the same two days in the workplace each week—makes attendance predictable for employees and teams.

Fixed office or anchor days
Everyone, or a particular team, attends on designated days. These are often called anchor days because they give colleagues planned opportunities to meet in person. Canada’s Department of National Defence describes fixed-days arrangements as one option; that is an example of one department’s policy guidance, not a universal requirement. See the Department of National Defence’s remote-work guidance.
Flexible days with a required attendance count
The employer sets a minimum number of workplace days, while the employee chooses when to attend. For example, a policy could require three workplace days without specifying which ones. The Australian Government’s mental health commission describes this kind of flexible split. Read the Australian Government’s hybrid-working guidance.

Combination fixed and flexible days
Some days are mandatory—for example, a team’s shared meeting day—while employees choose the remaining workplace days needed to satisfy the policy.
Attendance that varies with operations or the role
Workplace attendance can change with operational needs, the type of work, or access to equipment. A role that depends on on-site equipment or services may require more workplace time than one that can be performed remotely. The Canadian department’s guidance includes up to five on-site days for particular positions; that is a role-specific example, not a general definition of hybrid work.

How many days do hybrid workers go into the office?
There is no single required count. Gallup reported that hybrid workers in its 2023 research averaged 2.6 office days per week. That is a sample average, not a policy recommendation or a universal figure for every country, industry, or employer.
Gallup also reported different levels of control over schedules in its 2023 findings: 31% of hybrid employees had full autonomy to choose their office schedule each week; 10% were encouraged, but not required, to follow guidelines; 28% were required to attend on specific days; and 22% had to be on-site a minimum number of days but could choose which days. These figures describe Gallup’s reported categories, not the rules at a particular workplace. See Gallup’s findings on hybrid work schedules.

A separate UK Department for Work and Pensions employer survey reported that 77% of surveyed employers offered flexibility in working hours and 39% offered hybrid working in 2024. Decide how much predictable overlap is needed
Fixed days make it easier to know when colleagues will be together. With employee-selected days, teams may need to plan meetings and shared work more deliberately so the right people overlap.

Consider which tasks benefit from in-person teamwork, which require particular equipment, and whether safety or accommodation needs affect where the work can be done. Available workplace space can also shape the arrangement.
Weigh choice against coordination
More employee choice can provide greater autonomy, while fixed schedules can simplify planning. The Australian guidance identifies autonomy, satisfaction, work-life interference, visibility, relationships, and role clarity as considerations that may vary by model; they are not guaranteed outcomes for every employee or workplace.
What to check in your employer’s policy
The word “hybrid” alone does not tell you how your own week is supposed to work. Check the written arrangement for the details that determine your schedule:
- How many workplace days are required, and who chooses them?
- Are any office or anchor days fixed?
- How can the schedule change, and how much notice is required for a change or a required workplace visit?
- What are the expected working hours and communication arrangements?
The U.S. Office of Personnel Management’s guidance says written arrangements should clarify the schedule, how changes are handled, hours, communication expectations, and notice for required reporting. See the U.S. Office of Personnel Management’s telework guidance.
