It does not prove that untested behavior worked—or that a consequential action, such as charging a customer or saving an order, completed successfully. To judge a result before merging or shipping, look beyond what the page displayed and verify the runtime behavior and final application state.
What does a green check establish?
It establishes a bounded fact: the behavior the test asserted met the condition it checked. If a test confirms that a checkout page renders, a pass is evidence that the page rendered under that test’s conditions. It is not evidence that every other part of checkout worked.

Anything the test did not assert—or could not observe—remains outside that result. A passing status is useful evidence, but its meaning depends on what the test exercised and what it verified.

How can the screen look right while the flow fails?
A page can render correctly while an important side effect fails. Reticle’s engineering article gives two examples: a checkout page appears even though the charge fails, and a success message appears even though the order never reaches the database. In both cases, the visible interface can look successful while the intended outcome has not happened.

That does not make screenshots or visual checks useless. They can establish that the interface looks as expected. They simply cannot, on their own, establish that a request succeeded, an error was handled, or the resulting data was persisted.
What should you inspect before trusting a consequential flow?
For actions that matter—such as completing a purchase—Reticle recommends looking beyond the screenshot at the runtime evidence and comparing it with the intended outcome:

- Network calls: Check whether the expected requests occurred and whether they succeeded. A visible transition alone does not establish that the underlying operation completed.
- Final application state: Verify that the expected result exists, such as an order actually being present, rather than inferring success from a toast or confirmation screen.
- Errors: Look for failures that were swallowed or otherwise did not surface visibly. A quiet interface is not proof that no error occurred.
- Code location: When observed behavior diverges from intent, identify where the divergence occurs so the failure can be traced to the relevant behavior rather than just a red or green summary.
These checks help distinguish a rendered page from a completed flow, a successful request from a persisted result, and a pass/fail label from evidence that points to the behavior under test.
Why does this matter for coding agents?
Reticle’s concern is that a coding agent may produce code and tests while leaving some scenarios unconsidered. In that case, the tests can pass without covering the behavior a team needs to trust. The article provides no measured rate for this risk, so it should be treated as a testing concern, not a quantified claim about agent performance.
