What Does “16 Million Colors” Mean? 24-Bit RGB Explained

“16 million colors” usually means 24-bit RGB: 8 bits each for red, green and blue, allowing 16,777,216 possible encoded combinations per pixel. It is not a guarantee that every image or monitor uses or reproduces them all.

“16 million colors” usually means 24-bit RGB: three 8-bit channels—red, green and blue—with 256 possible values each. Together, they allow 16,777,216 encoded color combinations for each pixel. That describes what the format can represent, not what every image contains or what every screen can reproduce.

What does “16 million colors” mean?

A bit is a binary digit. Eight bits can encode 28, or 256, values. In 24-bit RGB, each pixel has 8 bits for red, 8 for green and 8 for blue. Since the channels can vary independently, the number of possible combinations is 256 × 256 × 256 = 224 = 16,777,216. Microsoft’s bitmap documentation gives this count for 24 bits per pixel: Microsoft Learn: Bitmap Creation.

An RGB pixel is described by a triplet of channel values, each from 0 to 255. For example, (0, 0, 0) is black, (255, 255, 255) is white, and (255, 0, 0) is red. These are encoded values; their appearance can vary with the color space, image handling and display.

Does every image contain all 16.7 million colors?

No. The figure is the number of possible RGB codes available to a 24-bit pixel, not a count of colors that must appear in an image. A photograph, icon or flat-color graphic may use only a small subset. An image can also store color differently, so its actual possibilities depend on its format and encoding.

How is 24-bit RGB different from a palette?

A palette-based image stores an index that points to a color table, rather than storing a full RGB triplet for every pixel. For example, Microsoft describes a 4-bit index that can select among 16 entries; each entry may itself specify a color using 24-bit RGB. The index depth and the color depth of the table are different things.

GIF is limited to 256 colors per image under the format description in Microsoft’s documentation, while color JPEG commonly stores 24 bits per pixel and can represent more than 16 million colors. Those formats also differ in compression: the same documentation describes JPEG as lossy and GIF as lossless in its stated context. Color count alone does not tell you which format is better for a particular image: Microsoft Learn: Bitmap Creation.

Is 16 million colors the same as 32-bit color?

Not necessarily. “16 million colors” refers to the 24 RGB color bits. A 32-bit pixel may use those same 24 bits for red, green and blue, plus 8 bits for alpha—the channel commonly used to describe per-pixel transparency. In that case, 32-bit color does not mean four times as many RGB colors. Adobe’s color-depth explanation distinguishes 24-bit color without alpha from 32-bit support that includes it: Adobe: Color modes.

Does a monitor with 16 million colors show every color?

No. A color count in a specification is not proof that a screen natively produces every corresponding level or displays colors accurately. EIZO notes that similar stated color counts can come from different panel methods, including native 8-bit operation and six-bit panels using frame-rate control (FRC) to simulate additional gradations: EIZO: Maximum Display Colors.

For display specifications, keep three questions separate:

  • Color count: How many encoded values or gradations does the specification claim, and by what method?
  • Gamut: What range of colors can the display or color space represent? A larger count does not necessarily mean a wider range.
  • Accuracy: How closely does the screen reproduce the intended colors? A color-count figure alone does not establish accuracy or calibration.

Gamut is a range of colors, while a color space is a system for organizing and specifying them. CSS can use wider-gamut color spaces beyond traditional sRGB, so the familiar 24-bit RGB count is not a universal ceiling for digital color: Chrome for Developers: High definition CSS color guide.

Is 16 million the maximum number of digital colors?

No. It is the count for the common 24-bit RGB case, not a limit applying to every image format or color workflow. Truecolor images commonly store a value for each of three channels, but channel formats and color spaces can vary. HDR imagery, for example, may use 32-bit floating-point values for each color channel rather than 8-bit integer values: MathWorks: Image Types.
