In Visual Studio’s Concurrency Visualizer, EventSource events with the opcodes win:Start and win:Stop mark the beginning and end of a span. The visualizer can display that span only when it is neither nested or overlapping with another span nor split across threads.

What win:Start and win:Stop mean

Microsoft documents win:Start as the beginning of a span and win:Stop as its end. This is a convention the Concurrency Visualizer uses to render EventSource events as markers; it describes how the profiler interprets those events, not a general definition of the words “start” and “stop” across Windows.

When the Concurrency Visualizer can display a span

The documented display has two constraints:

  • A span cannot be nested inside or overlap another span.
  • The event that starts a span and the event that ends it must be on the same thread.

If a trace contains a start/stop pair that violates either constraint, the corresponding span may not appear in the visualizer. A missing displayed span therefore does not, by itself, prove that the relevant events were absent from the trace.

How other EventSource markers are shown

Start/stop spans are one of several marker types. Events with neither opcode may appear as flag markers when they meet the event-level condition in Microsoft’s documentation; otherwise, the visualizer treats them as messages. These categories help distinguish span boundaries from individual event markers.
