A velocity stack is a flared, bell-shaped intake entry fitted at a carburetor or intake opening. It helps air enter the intake tract smoothly and adds length to the path the engine breathes through, so it can change airflow and power delivery. The effect depends on the engine, the rest of the intake, and the specific stack. A stack is not a guaranteed horsepower upgrade.
How the flared mouth affects airflow
The main job of the stack’s mouth is to reduce the abrupt disturbance that happens when air meets a sharp-edged opening. A rounded, flared entry guides air into the carburetor or intake tube more gradually. Engineers describe this as a smoother transition, and it is the reason a stack is shaped the way it is rather than being a plain tube.

Because the stack sits at the entrance, its inlet radius, diameter, and clearance to nearby parts all influence how air arrives. A stack that looks similar to another can still flow differently if its inlet shape or fit around the airbox is different.

Why stack length changes where the engine responds
Air moving into an engine creates pressure waves in the intake tract, and the length of that tract affects how those waves reinforce or cancel at different engine speeds. The stack adds to the effective intake length, which is why it is tuned as part of the whole intake rather than chosen for appearance.

CSP Products, in its technical explanation of its own stacks, says length should suit the camshaft. It describes a longer stack as tending toward more torque at lower engine speed and a shorter stack as suiting high-revving engines. Treat this as tuning guidance. It does not predict the exact power curve of any particular motorcycle.

What the published 2022 test measured
The clearest published test is a 2022 study in Engineering and Applied Science Research. It examined three stack geometries on a 150 cc four-stroke motorcycle using flow-bench and dynamometer testing. The authors describe the setup this way: “The velocity stack is mounted at the main throttle body of the carburetor as shown in Figure 1.”

The reported airflow figures are below. The percentage changes are calculated from the paper’s own cfm values, not separately measured.

In this test, airflow rose with any of the three stacks, and the differences among the stack geometries were comparatively small. The paper also reports performance and mixture changes for its setup, but those results belong to that engine, parts, and test range. Different displacement, intake design, engine modifications, environmental conditions, or calibration can produce different outcomes, so the table should not be read as a power promise for another motorcycle.

Fitment: what to check before buying
Velocity stacks are application-specific. Current motorcycle-specific listings, such as the Schnitz Racing catalog, offer stacks for particular sportbike models, and carburetor-specific listings state carburetor-size compatibility and stack lengths. Product claims and stock status are the seller’s to confirm.
- Exact motorcycle year and model, or the carburetor size the stack is designed for.
- Mounting method and dimensions, including the flange or clamp arrangement at the carburetor or intake.
- Clearance to the frame, tank, fuel lines, and throttle linkage through the full steering and throttle range.
- Airbox and filter arrangement, and whether there is room between the stack and the filter cover.
- Whether the maker lists a fueling or ECU change for that kit and motorcycle.
Construction details such as material and finish describe the product. They do not by themselves prove a performance advantage.

Filtration and the airbox
An exposed stack does not automatically provide the same filtration as a stock airbox. Before using a stack, check whether the design is meant to work inside the airbox or with a specific filter, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. No single filtration outcome applies to all stack designs, so the product documentation for your exact kit is the reference.
Tuning requirements
Changing the intake changes how much air the engine draws, so fueling needs to match. Get Fast Performance states that its velocity-stack kits are intended for race-technician installation and that the motorcycle must be tuned on a dynamometer afterward. That is a requirement for those kits.

For other stacks, the manufacturer’s instructions govern. If the instructions are silent, consult a qualified tuner and verify fueling or ECU calibration on the actual motorcycle rather than assuming the stock settings still apply.
Practical steps before you order
- Confirm the exact year, model, or carburetor size, and match the listing to it.
- Check the mounting method, dimensions, and clearance with the bike assembled and the steering locked both ways.
- Read the airbox and filter instructions, and decide how the bike will be filtered.
- Ask whether the kit requires a fueling change or dynamometer tuning, and budget for that work.
- After installation, verify the tune and check that the engine runs cleanly across its full throttle range.
A stack changes the intake, and the tune is what makes the change work. Choose it for a specific motorcycle and an intended riding range, not for a general performance promise.
